REACT (UMD Housewrite, 1/31/15 @ Rice)

Post by luigibeatsmario »

The Rice University Quizbowl Club is happy to announce the Rice Experimental ACademic Tournament, or REACT, which will take place on January 31st, 2015. “Experimental” refers to this being the first high school tournament hosted by the Rice University Quizbowl Club, not any sort of new radical format. Since this is a proof of concept tournament demonstrating our ability to efficiently run tournaments, the entry fees will be very low. This tournament is open to all high school and middle school teams.

Logistics

This tournament will begin in the large amphitheater in Herring Hall, and then move to the actual rooms in Rayzor Hall and the Humanities building. Check-in will start at 8:00 a.m, and the opening meeting will start at 8:40, with matches scheduled to begin at 9:00. Upon arriving, your team will be asked to submit any buzzers for discounts, and then to fill out an order for lunch, which will be Jimmy John’s. Lunch should take place after round six or seven, between noon and 12:45 (depending on when the rounds end and the food arrives).

Format

This tournament will be run using the University of Maryland’s housewrite, which is a regular-difficulty high school tournament (on par with NAQT’s IS sets). We’ll be giving out paper copies of the set to each school after the tournament is over. The schedule will depend on the number of registered teams, but will certainly be a round robin amongst preliminary brackets, then rebracketed for a playoff round robin. We are hoping to guarantee a minimum of nine games for each team, as well as earn the highest PACE certification that we can. We will use NAQT rules, but without the clocks. The field will be initially set at 16 teams, until we know what the buzzer situation is. This number will be pretty flexible.

Entry Fees

$65 base fee first team, $50 base fee for additional teams. Minimum fee is $40 per team.
-$5 for functional buzzer system (applied to first team)
-$10 for approved moderator (applied to first team)
-$40 for schools who have not played pyramidal quizbowl in the past three years (overrides minimum discount, applied to each team)

To register for this tournament, or if you have any questions, you may either reply in this thread or email me at akp2 at rice dot edu.

Hey, Amanda,

Today is Dec. 27th, and we're trying to put together a calendar of QB events for January.

Is your tournament on 31 January 2015 still a "GO" at Rice U.?

thanks!

Yes, the tournament is definitely still a go. In addition, PACE has certified our tournament as platinum and we've expanded our field cap to 24 teams! The original announcement will be edited to reflect this shortly.

The field has been updated.

NHBB is now the official sponsor of this tournament, and has graciously lended us several buzzers to supplement the current stock of the tournament. In addition, the winning team at this tournament will earn a free registration at the 2015 Houston History Bee and Bowl, which is being held at Rice on February 21st

With the field now set, CPS is looking forward to Saturday's tournament.

Although we might receive the door prize for 'Longest Distance Travelled"
for entering the tournament, we look forward to the competition, esp.
one that includes teams we've not played against this academic year.

We'll win some matches; lose some matches -- and continue toward our
nationals preparations.

For us, this is a good opportunity!

Rain or no, we'll see y'all at Rice!

Oops. I sent a follow-up email to all the teams that attended, but I forgot to post something for the rest of the world. Congratulations to St. John's, who went undefeated to win the tournament! In addition to St. John's, Village and Carnegie Vanguard have qualified for PACE NSC. Final standings and combined stats are posted. If you catch any mistakes, let me know.

Thank you to everyone for making our first high school quizbowl tournament a successful one, and we hope to see you at future events!
