SCOP mirror @ Hunter College High School, NYC (11/1/14)
Hunter College High School (located at 71 East 94th Street, New York, NY, 10128) is pleased to announce its mirror of SCOP Novice 5 on Saturday, November 1, 2013. Our school is located at 71 East 94th Street, New York, NY, 10128, between Park and Madison Avenues. The fourth iteration of our yearly fall novice tournament, it will be co-directed by Sarah Hamerling and Albert Tai. You can reach us at [email protected].
Eligibility
Since this is a novice tournament, we're limiting eligibility to players in their first or second year of playing high school quiz bowl (not including single subject tournaments such as NHBB or Science Bowl). To create a level playing field, we are also barring players who have attended either PACE NSC or NAQT HSNCT. If you have any questions concerning eligibility, please contact us.
Registration
Registration for this tournament is now closed. See you on Saturday!
Tournament Format
The tournament will follow standard ACF rules of untimed rounds consisting of 20 tossups and 20 three-part, 30 point bonuses, with neg-fives and 15-point powers, but no bounce-backs on bonuses.
The tournament will consist of bracketed round-robin prelims and rebracketed round-robin playoffs, the details of which are to be decided and announced after the field is determined. Teams will play between 9 and 10 rounds, and ties will be played off, packets permitting. We'll also have book prizes for top scorers!
Registration and breakfast will be ongoing from 8:00 am to 8:45 am, with the first round beginning at approximately 9:00 am and the tournament ending at around 5:30 pm.
Question Set
The SCOP set is novice difficulty, and more information including its distribution (which does not include computational math) can be found here. Past SCOP sets can be found by following these links:
SCOP 2013.
SCOP 2012.
SCOP 2011.
SCOP 2010.
Please do not discuss the questions played at this tournament until this year's set is cleared by the writers.
Fee Structure
$55 for the first team from a school
$45 for each subsequent team
-$5 for each working buzzer system
-$10 for each experienced moderator
$25 minimum fee per team
Further discounts (such as for travel) can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis with the tournament directors.
We prefer payment through a check made out to HCHS Quiz Bowl on the day of the tournament. And no, we do not accept serfdom as a form of payment.
Transportation and Food
Our school is located at 71 East 94th Street, New York, NY, 10128, between Park and Madison Avenues. It is very close to the 96th street stop on the 6 train line, and can also be reached by the m1-4 buses along Madison and the crosstown m96 bus along 96th. There is a bus drop-off area at our school on Park, and cars can park at Majestic Car Park on 94th between Park and Lexington.
We'll provide breakfast consisting of edibles such as bagels, coffee, and juice. Our butter's really good (actually, I think it may be margarine -- but whatever it is, it's certainly very tasty!). We'll also provide a map detailing the many nearby lunch options.
Current Field (Teams/Buzzers/Staff)
Gotham (2/0/0)
North Babylon (2/3/1)
Ridgewood (2/0/2)
St. Joe's (2/2/0)
St. Luke's (2/0/0)
Trinity (1/0/0)
West Egg (5/0/5)
Wheatley (2/1/1)

Livingston may be able to send 1 team of newbies. When do you need to know by? Is there a chance that the tournament may not run as I only see 2 schools signed up as of today?

Updated the forum post.
Mr. Rabner, if you could confirm your team by the registration deadline, October 27, that would be great. There are still 2 weeks or so before said deadline, so we're banking on teams to sign up in that time period.
Sorry Shravan, but Nov. 8 is an SAT II testing date, and many of our team members will be out taking it.

St. Luke's School would like to bring a second team to SCOP Novice. We may have enough for a third team, but will let you know later on if that is possible.
