PADAWAN @ University of Toronto 2014-10-19

Post by otsasonr »

I am pleased to announce that the University of Toronto Academic Trivia club will be hosting the Canadian mirror of PADAWAN on Sunday, 19 October, 2014.

Please register for this tournament by emailing me at reinotsason [AT] gmail [DOT] com. Please include "PADAWAN" in the subject line.

For details on distribution and eligibility, please see the global announcement.

Money Matters

The fees for this tournament are as follows:

Base fee: $120
Buzzers: -$10 for each fully functional set
Staffers: -$10 for each fully functional human
Distance: -$10 for each 200 km travelled one way
Minimum fee: $70

Payment is due before games commence. No money, no Quizbowl. Acceptable methods of payment are:
  • Cold hard cash; or
  • a cheque made out to the "University of Toronto Academic Trivia Club"
Schedule and other administrative details

Teams must arrive at the tournament by 08:30. Games will start at 09:00. Those are both AM times in case you are brain dead.

A more detailed schedule including lunch and expected end time will be available once the field is better established.

Location details will become available shortly, but the tournament will likely be held in Sidney Smith Hall like other recent U of T tournaments.

Questions, concerns, or comments?

Please post them here. That way I can answer them once instead of twenty times. Updates will also be posted here, so stay tuned!

Carleton will be at this tournament, and we'll register our teams once we know how many there will be.

I repeat Nick's comment, and we'll see closer to the day. If last year is representative, we'll be likely sending one team, mix of old and new players. I'm not allowed to play at this tournament, so if I come down with the team, you'll have a staffer on hand.

Sinan, if you're going to be there, could you please bring the permanent SCT trophy you won in Ottawa? Just want to make sure it makes it to this season's SCT. I won't be there but I'm sure someone will step up to keep it in Ontario until Feb...

Cool. And good luck that weekend with the "Alberta has finished first at every Canadian tournament they have attended:" that is an impressive streak (and it would be cool to see it keep going)!

I emailed the email with McGill's registration. Do you expect this tournament to end within a reasonable time to take a 6pm train from Union?

I expect it to, yes. Unless the field balloons in the next few days we should finish well before then. Be advised though that I am still waiting to hear from a few schools that said they would be coming but have not yet confirmed how many teams they are bringing. There will be a schedule posted when all of that is settled.

Confirming our numbers as two teams, one set of buzzers, and no staffers.

Looking forward to seeing most of the staffers and all of the players there!

The field for this tournament is now capped at 10 teams.

As of the writing of this post, we have 8 confirmed teams, and two schools which have indicated they may want to send teams.

Today is the deadline for claiming discounts for staffers and buzzers. If you intend to claim those discounts, you must inform me via email by tonight. Teams which have already indicated they are bringing staffers or buzzers do not need to inform me again.

Waterloo would like to register a 3rd team if that is still possible. I understand other teams have expressed interest, so it's fine if you can't accommodate us. But we are ready to confirm a 3rd team at this point.

I'm going to hold the two remaining spots for the schools that have expressed interest until Oct 15th (tomorrow) at 6:30 AM, just in the interests of giving some fair warning so they can coordinate their teams, and in the hopes of having a broad field. If I have not heard anything by then, however, it will be first come, first serve, with Waterloo C having first dibs on the remaining spots.

Carleton will be sending 1 team and 1 set of buzzers to this tournament, and we've sent an email confirming as much. Sorry for the delay in registering, I was too busy hiking the Appalachian Trail.

The field for this tournament is now closed.

A schedule will be posted by (late) tonight.

Also, invoices will be sent out detailing how much money is owed by each school, and discrepancies should be brought to my attention by Saturday. As a reminder, fees are due before games commence, and teams will not be permitted to play if the proper amount of money is not received.

Stats will be updated here.

A car of Waterloo students and the Western team have not arrived due to long-distance runners' tendency to shut down major roads.

It was a fun tournament. Everyone from Western was glad to come. Thanks to everyone at Toronto who put it on, and all the staff from other schools too.

On a related note, what does PADAWAN actually stand for? Unless I missed it, it's not even stated in the main thread.
