Mount Carmel Open (New Orleans, LA) 12/6/14

On behalf of Mount Carmel Academy, I would like to invite you to the Mount Carmel Open quiz bowl tournament, which will be held on Saturday, December 6th and is open to any high school teams.

The tournament will use NAQT rules and question set IS-142. The complete rules are available at http://www.naqt.com/rules.html . Sample questions of similar style and difficulty are available at http://www.naqt.com/samples/invitational-series.pdf . Teams will be divided into different pools for the morning rounds; afternoon matches will feature teams of similar ability levels competing against each other. The exact format will depend upon the number of teams, but should guarantee each teams 8 or 9 games plus any necessary tiebreakers.

Schedule (subject to change):
Registration: 8:00-8:30
Meeting for players and coaches: 8:40-9:00
Preliminary rounds: 9:00-11:45
Lunch: 11:45-12:30
Individual awards ceremony: 12:30-12:45
Playoff rounds: 12:45-3:00
Trophy ceremony: 3:00-3:15

We will be providing complimentary donuts, milk, and juice in the morning. Also, we will be selling pizza and soft drinks for lunch, and there are a few fast food places within walking distance.

The field size will be capped at 18 teams. We hope to increase this number if more readers are available. Each school may register up to two teams. The base fee for each team is $50. There is a $10 discount for bringing an experienced reader who can work the entire day of the tournament. Please make checks payable to “Mount Carmel Academy.” You may bring a check or cash on the day of the tournament, or you may mail a check to my attention at Mt. Carmel Academy, 7027 Milne Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124.

Team trophies will be provided to the winner and runner-up. Individual trophies will be provided to the top 4 individual scorers and the top scorer from each grade level (based on the results of the preliminary rounds).

After two morning groups of 7 teams each, the top three from each group advanced to the championship bracket. Lusher A (9-0) defeated Jesuit A (8-1) 290-245 to win the championship.
