University of Charleston Fall Kickoff (9/27/14)

Post by Bensonfan23 »

The University of Charleston in Charleston, WV, is proud to announce that it will be holding the Second Annual UCWV Fall Kickoff Tournament on September 27, 2014. Last year’s tournament was a large success and we hope to build upon that success this year. The tournament director for this tournament will once again be Michelle Herdman (contact information below), however, I will gladly answer any questions posted here as well since I am posting this on her behalf.

Changes from last year at a glance:
- We will no longer be using a four-quarter format (See format below).
- All questions will now have powers , no negs will be used.
- Guaranteed 8 rounds for all teams.

Set:
NAQT’s IS 139-A

Location:
University of Charleston
2300 Maccorckle Ave SE.
Charleston, WV 25304

Format:
The format for each round will be 10 tossups without bonuses, followed by a fifteen question worksheet, and then by ten tossups with bonuses. All questions will have powers but no negs, and bonuses will not bounceback. Teams will be initially placed into morning round robin groups (number to be determined by field size) and teams will be re-bracketed at lunch based on performance in their morning rounds. The exact grouping format will depend, however, on the total number of teams in the field.

Who May Register?:
This tournament is open to all teams, regardless of location. Last year’s tournament featured teams from West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio, and we would love to see teams from other nearby states as well. There is also no cap on the number of teams that one school may register.

Registration:
This tournament will once again be using an online registration. The link is http://ucwv.edu/quizbowl/. Registration will close on September 19; anyone desiring to register after that date or before the link is updated should contact the tournament director by email.

Field Size:
The initial field cap for this tournament will be 30 teams.

Fees:
The registration fee will be $50 per registered team.

Discounts:
- $5 per buzzer system; one discount allowed per team registered.
- $5 per capable volunteer; only one discount may be claimed per school, regardless of number of teams.

Tournament Director Contact Information:
Dr. Michelle Herdman

Just a reminder that the registration deadline for this tournament is this Friday. From what I'm told, several more teams are expected to register this week, so any teams interested should go ahead and sign up.

Northmont cleared the field by 2 games to win the tournament at 10-0. Honestly have no clue what the order was behind us- top 6 was Northmont, Tippecanoe, Dunbar A and B, and Russell A and B. There were several instances of B teams beating their A team in the playoffs, so i don't know what that did to the final finishing order. I believe Dunbar B was 8-2 to finish 2nd, but Michelle would need to confirm that.

My apologies for never posting anything about this tournament. As David said though, Northmont finished in 1st and Dunbar A finished in second. The order for the rest of the top bracket was Dunbar B, Tippecanoe, Russell A, and Russell B. Full statistics can be found here.
