10th HIT - Hoover, AL 11-1-2014 ->Win a new set of buzzers!

Post by Joshua Rutsky »

Hoover High School is pleased to announce the 10th Hoover Invitational Tournament to be held on November 1, 2014 in Hoover, AL (just outside of Birmingham). This tournament will follow NAQT rules (powers/negs) with untimed 20/20 rounds without bouncebacks. Teams will play a minimum of six prelim matches before rebracketing for playoffs.

We will be using NAQT's IS-140 for the varsity division matches. NOTE THAT THIS IS A CHANGE FROM THE PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED IS-138. JV and Novice brackets will play using the SCOP 5 set.

The cost per team for this event is $60. We will offer discounts for teams travelling from out of state by request. Please register your team before October 15th to ensure a spot in the field.

UPDATE: Thanks to a very generous donation from the Quik Pro company, we will be giving away a BRAND NEW BUZZER SET in a drawing at this event! We will hold the drawing at the end of the preliminary rounds, and each school that attends the event will get one entry into the drawing for this prize. Hoover Quiz Bowl is very, very lucky to have Lynn Easterling and his great staff at Specialty Design as supporters of our program. Please check out their systems at http://www.specialtydesigncorp.com!

Thanks for an awesome tournament.

The field was huge and very tough, but you did a great job of making sure everyone got to play a quality schedule and that the best teams all got to fight it out for the championship. Also, the moderators in the Varsity division were excellent. There were no problems at all.

Some people might complain about the length of the tournament, but it was great. Those of us who go to National Championship tournaments need to have a few marathon-length events under our belts before traveling to HSNCT or SSNCT. Quiz Bowl is an exhausting endeavor and we need to build up our stamina before the big events in the Spring. Great tournaments like the Hoover Invitational give us that opportunity.

That being said, it was still amazing that you did as many rounds as you did and still got done around 5:00 pm.

Thanks again. I know firsthand how much work and sacrifice goes in to hosting such an enormous event. I want you to know that your hard work and dedication are not unnoticed. Thanks.

Thank you, guys. The kids and I appreciate it.

Stats are now up for all three divisions of the tourney:

Novice: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... all_games/

JV: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... all_games/

Varsity: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... all_games/

Because of the way we handled the event, using flights for the top 8 teams in each grouping, then allowing teams under that to play additional games if they chose for final position, I want to list our official results here, as the SQBS results don't come out quite the same way for various reasons.

VARSITY top 8:

West Point
Gadsden City
Woodford County KY A
Woodford County KY B
Spain Park
James Clemens
Grissom
Altamont

Complete team rankings will be posted at the NAQT web site for Varsity.

JUNIOR VARSITY TOP 8:

Hume-Fogg, TN JV
Springwood
Spain Park JV
Altamont JV
James Clemens JV
Indian Springs JV A
Woodford County, KY JV A
Oak Mountain JV

After that,
9. LAMP JV A
10. Ramsay
11. Alma Bryant
11. Mtn. Brook
13. Grissom
13. Gadsden JV B
15. Vestavia
15. Russellville
15. Indian Springs JV B
15. LAMP JV B
19. Woodford KY JV B
20. Muscle Shoals JV
20. Springville JV
22. Cordova JV
22. Evangel Christian JV
22. Gadsden JV A

NOVICE TOP 8:

Cordova Novice
Altamont Novice
Hume-Fogg, TN Novice A
Briarwood Christian Novice
Woodford County, KY Novice
Indian Springs Novice A
Hume-Fogg, TN Novice B
Hewitt-Trussville Novice

After that,

9. West Point Novice
10. Covenant Christian Novice
11. Indian Springs Novice B
12. Athens Novice
12. Muscle Shoals Novice
14. Springville Novice

Thank you to the many people who volunteered to assist or were recruited with assorted bribes (over 80 staffers) and to all the teams for coming. We hope it was worth the trip.

Also, congrats to Evangel Christian, who won the buzzer system prize, and to James Clemens, who won a complete overhaul of a Quik Pro buzzer set from Specialty Design Corp.
