William Rufus King Invitational VIII at Alabama (9/27/14)

Post by 49-Mile Scenic Drive »

Greetings all!

The Alabama Academic Quizbowl Team will be hosting William Rufus King Invitational VIII: Is It Worth It? Let Me WRK It on Saturday September 27th, 2014. We plan to use NAQT IS-137A as our question set. We'd like to have a brief meeting at 8:40ish with matches starting at 8:45 (but after all this is quizbowl, that never goes according to plan!). In all seriousness we'd like to start NO LATER than 9:00am. Tournament will be held in Bidgood Hall just as past incarnations have been.

*UPDATE 8/28/14* I just checked my e-mail and Mike Bentley e-mailed back to inform me that WRK received a Gold Certification, meaning that "the top 20% of teams in your tournament (rounded up to the nearest integer) will qualify for our national high school quizbowl championship, the PACE NSC on the weekend of May 24-25th at the Hyatt Regency Reston outside of Washington, D.C."

The fee structure for the tournament will be as follows:
- $65 for one team
- $55 for every additional team
Discounts:
- $10 per experienced moderator
- $5 per buzzer set (up to 2 discounts per working buzzer but feel free to bring more) - All of your buzzers must work to receive any buzzer discount.
- $10 per 200 miles traveled according to Google maps.
- If this is your first tournament as a program (or your first in years), or if your team is not sponsored by your school, talk to us and we'll work out a payment plan.
Minimum fee: $40 per team

Please send checks to:

Gadsden will be there with as many as you will let us bring 3-4. Are you having a JV division? Trophies this year?

Apologies for the delay, but the long-awaited 1st field update has occurred. To answer Mr. Davenport's question, we do plan to have trophies this year. A JV Division is still up in the air, but we'd certainly be welcomed to having one assuming a fair number of jv teams show up. We have another officers meeting in the coming few days and I'll make sure to bring the topic up to them! If any of the already-registered schools are interested in bringing teams after their 3rd, we will gladly put them on a waitlist and if space is available at the cut-off they will be put in the field.

Hello. My name is Br. Thomas, scholars' bowl coach at St. Bernard Prep School in Cullman, AL, and I'm interested in taking my teams to the tournament in Tuscaloosa. I might be bringing 2 or 3 teams, and I'd like to watch one of my teams participate, but if you need me to moderate I can. I won't be bringing a buzzer system. My first question is when is the deadline for registering? Is the 200 miles roundtrip, or is it just to drive to Tuscaloosa? Where at UA is the tournament held at? Is lunch included in the cost of registration and if it isn't, how much should each student bring? What time does registration begin, and what time do you recommend we get there? Thank You very much and I look forward to hearing back from you.

Pax,

Post updated with new teams as well as info on where the tournament will be held and where to send checks to. Br. Thomas, we don't currently envision a need for moderators, so you are more than welcome to watch your teams during the rounds. If we end up needing some we'll burn that bridge when it's time to cross it.

One of Oak Mountain's teams will be JV. It was in my original post, but it isn't marked that way on the current list of teams.

The field is now officially capped and any other interested teams are welcome to join the waitlist. An official tournament e-mail with format, instructions, etc. will follow tomorrow morning once I confirm meeting room numbers and what not. If for some reason I have incorrect information about your teams/buzzers/etc on here, pm me or email me at the address above.

I see JV teams listed. Is there a separate division for JV? If so, we'll have 1 JV team.

I'm wondering the same....

I was pleasantly surprised to find a 2nd place JV trophy waiting for me at work this morning. Apparently my JV team got 2nd and I didn't even know it.

I am dying to see the stats.
