New England (CT, MA, VT, NH) Date Claims, 2014-15

Post by Grace »

[This post demonstrates my superior copying and pasting skills. Many thanks go to Matt Jackson for doing the hard work of writing all the text.]

Hi folks! For this school year, I'll be updating a calendar of tournament dates within, or of interest to, the New England area. This calendar should remain suitably updated enough to be emailed or linked to for the benefit of teams and coaches that don't otherwise follow the forums. I'll try to update this with events in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire [plus, hypothetically, Rhode Island and Maine] as they get announced; if I miss yours or you want to sound out whether a certain date or time range works for a given event, post below.

Post also in this thread if you have tentative plans to host an event but aren't sure yet where it will go; this will help us avoid scheduling pileups or conflicts. Thanks!

While this post is somewhat premature, I figured that now would be a wonderful time to sound out everyone's opinions regarding scheduling for the 2014-2015 year, not least because I like making rash promises to Yale's room reservation staff about setting FAcT and BHSAT dates into stone.

NHBB Nationals is the weekend of April 25, so go ahead and add that in. Otherwise, we'll run one CT, one VT, two NH, and two MA events. We'll try Maine again (I wouldn't mind a recruiting trip up there in the fall), and maybe Rhode Island, since we at least now have one supremely talented USGO homeschooler in the Ocean State. We'll get started on scheduling next week, and will post dates as they come in. Everything will be between October 15 and March 21.

The Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl runs two NAQT A-level tournaments: The Sue Pasco Opening Tournament in Essex in September (likely either to be 9/20 or 9/27) and the Pre-Holiday Academic Tournament at South Burlington on a Friday in December (probably 12/5). The latter, in particular, welcomes teams from around the region as we've had more than 50 teams each of the last three years.

We also play host to the the Vermont NAQT Championship in March in Barre, plus our own league playoffs (likely 1/31 or 2/7) in Montpelier and our state championships in Burlington (likely 3/28 or 4/4).

We will likely finalize our schedule sometime in August.

If by that you mean the New England Championship on A set, then yes - we'll likely hold that at ConVal again (hence my listing two NH tournaments).

Is there any plans for an NAQT State Championship for MA this year. Considering that some schools on the circuit are beginning to become nationally recognized, and more interest has been seen in the past year, it would be awesome for our state to host one.

Although this isn't a New England tournament, you should probably put BrainBusters Fall at Ithaca HS (NY) on this list for Nov 1 (tentative), as we're recruiting a regional field this year and some New England teams may attend.

From looking in the Database ... the last time MITBAT ran, it used an HSAPQ ACF set, so it may use that again.
It's another good set for practice if no one ends up using it in the region.

Just to confirm, the Sue Pasco Opening Tournament will be September 27 at Essex High School. I just posted an announcement here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16286

A few other events planned for Northern New England this season possibly worth noting include:
11/1 -- Hanover Halloween Round Robin at Hanover (NH) HS
1/31 -- Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl playoffs at Montpelier HS
3/28 (date probable but not finalized) -- Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl finals

Also, assuming NAQT grants us the right to host again, the Vermont NAQT Championship will be Friday, March 6 at Spaulding High School in Barre.

Are any of the Massachusetts or Connecticut teams on here actually interested in coming up to Vermont for the Pre-Holiday Academic Tournament on Friday, December 5? I think most of the teams up here would probably prefer to play on A level questions, but considering the conflicts with MIT, Yale and Central Mass Invitational, I might be willing to switch to a full IS Set (138 appears to be open at the moment) if there is a reasonable amount of interest.

Northampton (which played 137A at MIT) has already inquired about PHAT, and we'd love to have more teams from points south.

The main reason, I think, is that it's easier for coaches to get their students to commit to tournaments on weekdays as schedule conflicts tend to pile up on Saturdays, especially during sports seasons. The coaches voted to hold PHAT on a Friday back when we first launched the tournament, and we've done so well attracting teams (52 teams or more three years in a row) that it's kind of stuck.

At the third roundabout, Cherry Avenue Extension (Route 140), enter the roundabout and again take the third exit (at your left upon entering the roundabout) onto Cherry Avenue Extension (Route 140). At the next light, turn left onto Kenwood Avenue. Stay on Kenwood, straight through the Delaware Avenue intersection (Four Corners). The Middle School is about 1/2 mile past Delaware Ave. on the right.

In addition to the above, the state tournament will be on Sunday, March 1. Another, western regional site is in the works. Full details on all these tournaments to follow.

Due to a lack of response from sufficiently many regional hosts, HSAPQ will only be hosting the state tournament this year (open-entry, 3/1 at MIT). Registration will be open soon at http://www.maquizbowl.com

We will be consulting interested hosts and attendees about financial/other aspects of the tournaments in order to expand the event in 2016 and beyond.

Darien is interested in hosting the Connecticut State Championship and is hoping to do it on April 11. We have asked NAQT, but have not yet heard back from them. I have no idea if any other school is interested in hosting the tournament-are there any?

Darien will indeed be hosting the NAQT Connecticut State Championship on April 11. A full announcement will be up in a couple days, followed by an email and a physical mailing.
