Global Announce: Introductory Collaborative Collegiate Set

Post by AKKOLADE »

Since Collegiate Novice has been canceled, Nicholas Karas and I have decided to announce the Introductory Collaborative Collegiate Set, a replacement event for the September/early October space on the calendar traditionally occupied by CN. This is a one-time event that I do not anticipate happening again in the future; this is not intended as a permanent replacement for CN. The only reason it's happening is because CN is not happening this year.

Is this set complete? Who is writing this tournament?

No, this set is not complete - writers were first recruited on July 24. We're still in the process of recruiting more writers.

At this time, we are asking experienced writers to voluntarily contribute to this tournament.

The current list of authors who have said they will write questions for this tournament, in the order of me being lazy and just typing them up in the order that I come across them, is: Ryan Rosenberg, Isaac Hirsch, Nicholas Karas, Max Schindler, Mike Cheyne, Ben Zhang, Jeff Hoppes, Joe Nutter, Aaron Rosenberg, Mike Bentley, Gautam Kandlikar, Eric Mukherjee, Jerry Vinokurov, Alex Dzurick, Fred Morlan, Will Alston, and Rob Carson.

How will editing work for this tournament?

I will be acting as a tournament overseer, so I'll be doing my best to make sure there aren't any repeats, everything's grammatically correct, etc. I anticipate Nicolas Karas will assist with this as well.

Do you still need help?

Not at this time. We are fortunate enough to receive enough commitments to write questions that we have the tournament completely booked in terms of writers. If that changes, I'll post about it here.

I am an experienced writer. How can I help you?

Email me at [email protected] or post in this thread, expressing interest in whichever portion of the distribution you're interested in.

How many packets will you produce?

We will produce ten packets. These will roughly follow the standard ACF distribution. The most notable current change is that we are doing 0.5/0.5 world literature, instead of 1/1 per packet; this results in an increase to 1.5/1.5 of "extra lit."

Who is eligible to play?

We'll be using the eligibility rules Andrew Hart developed for Collegiate Novice, which are as follows:
1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.

2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.

3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.

4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:

i. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits). Time in a post-secondary high school program does not count.

ii. If you have ever finished in the top 15 in scoring at PACE NSC or top 30 in scoring at NAQT HSNCT, or played on a team that finished in the top 10 at NSC or the top 20 at HSNCT.

iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.

iv. If you have ever won any college tournament.

5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.

6. Even if one of the rule 4 categories applies to you, you may still be able to play! Email me at [email protected] to apply for special dispensation. To apply: 1) state which of the rule 4 points would render you otherwise ineligible; 2) list when and how you achieved any of the accomplishments that led to your being otherwise ineligible; and 3) state succinctly why you want to play.
Cost

Hosts may charge up to $18 per player. We encourage hosts to keep costs as low as possible to encourage participation.

The cost to host is $5 per player (including players on house teams). This money is to be donated to the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence. It will be used to help high school hosts recruit teams to play their tournament.

We need commitments to write questions!

These are the portions of the distribution that are unclaimed.

Now, for a less happy note:

If we do not get enough people to help out with this set, it will have to be canceled. We've had a fantastic response so far, with 300 questions committed since only Thursday night. But we still need 180 more questions.

If you can help with this tournament at all, please, please, volunteer. I really prefer that you have some experience writing quiz bowl questions before, just because of the time frame we're working with.

If you're a new writer, contact me sometime after this coming Monday if we still have needs and we'll talk.

I assume that second phrase was intended to read "certainly not as hard as college quiz bowl tournaments"?

Essentially, yes, though I would encourage not writing any more world lit than necessary at this level.

I know I have emails inquiring about hosting from the following schools:

Carleton
Carnegie Mellon
Cornell
Florida Gateway College
Maryland
Ohio State
Virginia Tech

If there's anyone else that would like to be considered in the first batch of hosts, please be sure to email me by tonight.

Since many of the players of this set are very new to quizbowl, and perhaps don't know that they can give their comments here, I strongly suggest to hosts that they announce the existence of this subforum in their opening meetings (and perhaps email participants after the tournament is over about it), encouraging new people to join up and air their thoughts.

We had a similar situation at Kentucky and we did a full round robin and a one-game final. It did give a team the chance to force a tie for first.

I am curious about this rule regarding eligibility:

"iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament."

In particular, I have one interested and one potential sophomore player (Meghan Torchia and Faheem Pahlwan, respectively) who scored over 30 points at last year's Collegiate Novice but never managed to do it again at any tournament later in the year (which included ACF Fall, SCT Div 2, and MUT). I sent Fred an email almost two weeks ago (and a follow-up PM a few days ago) asking to get permission for these two players if it is necessary. Can one of the other head editors help me with this? Our meeting is tomorrow and I would like to let Meghan know whether or not she can play this weekend at Waterloo.

Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide.
