So, an initial NHBB post. It's looking like NJ States will be at Ridgewood on 1/24, and the Seton Hall tournament will move to November. Our Mid Atlantic Championships will ideally stay at Princeton, but move to one of the first three Saturdays in March. Westchester will still be at White Plains, but likely in December. Long Island will once again have two events; no word yet on those. Southern NJ will happen again at MonDon, but I need to get a date there (expect it to be in the fall, though). There will also be a CT event, a NYC tournament on a Sunday, possibly another tournament on a Sunday (to give Jewish schools a second chance to compete), probably two US History Bees, and 1 US Geography Olympiad regional (this is new). The USHB and USGO events will be after school, so I'm not worried about those.
I will update as events come in; for now, the only date I'd like to put a hold on is 1/24, though this still needs to be confirmed within the next week or so.

Is NHBB still running the A-B-C model? From your labelling of the Ridgewood tournament as "states", should I assume that's the B set?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Yale's FaCT is that day as well. Not sure if that's going to change anything though.

That won't change that much. Only Mountain Lakes, Kellenberg, and Charter attended both tournaments last year, if I'm correct. It might also allow for FAcT to cater more to New England teams.

Bergen Academies intends to actually hold a high school tournament in the springtime. We will try to use an HSAPQ set, and intend to run the tournament on NSC format to give local teams experience with the bounceback format prior to nationals. A date will be announced later.

Mountain Lakes intends on hosting sometime in the Fall, and potentially in January of 2015 depending on how large the team is and how much of a field we can realistically handle. Nothing is yet set in stone, but we'll definitely be hosting a tournament at some point next school year.

Let's all hope the weather cooperates better for tournaments next year.

NHBB confirms the following two dates:
Northern New Jersey History Bee and Bowl - Seton Hall University, Sat. Nov. 15 (C Set)
New Jersey History Bee and Bowl State Championships - Ridgewood High School, Sat. Jan. 24 (B Set)

I will direct both of these. Further dates to follow shortly.

The 2014 Southern NJ History Bee and Bowl will return to Monsignor Donovan High School in Toms River, NJ on Sat. Oct. 25. This will run on C Set. While this tournament is open to all teams, we anticipate that most Northern and North Central NJ teams will gravitate to the Northern NJ HBB at Seton Hall in November, also on C Set. C Set will also be run in NYC, Long Island, Northeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and Westchester, as was the case last year.

NJ States at Ridgewood has now been moved up a week to January 17, as the school has just told me that there's SAT testing that day. 1/17 looks open on the above calendar and that was the weekend we ran NJ States last year, so I guess this shouldn't be a problem. Sorry for any inconvenience here.

So, our HS has now decided that, for the first time ever, they will be hosting SATs the weekend of March 14 this year so we are getting bumped. I wanted to find a date that worked well for potential participants in 2015. Unfortunately, it appears that the weekend before and after us are now taken. Would anyone already hosting in the Spring be able to switch dates with us or is there a good open date that would work well to host? I'm going in to my HS to discuss on Wednesday so would like to get any suggestions from those in the region. Thanks.

Edit: At this point, I'm leaning toward February 7 as the best date for us and hoping there is no weather event!

Last year, there was no overlap of the fields between Livingston and the New York HSAPQ State Championship, so maybe moving it to Feb. 28th might be an option? I know this may change this year, but it'll probably work.

Columbia would like to claim December 6th for a BISB mirror. Announcement forthcoming.

Edit: and since Bloomfield is hosting that first week of March, I guess we'll tentatively shoot for having our spring high school event on February 28th, though if Bloomfield falls through again I think we'd like that date back. There may be a room reservation conflict for the 28th, which would mean pushing back to April 11th, I guess, but we'll deal with that in January. Regardless of how it all goes down, Columbia would like to host two high school tournaments this year.

Hunter will be hosting our fourth annual fall novice tournament on November 1. We'll be mirroring the SCOP 5 set. More info can be found here.

We'll also be hosting Prison Bowl VIII in the spring, so we'll let you all know when that will be happening once we finalize a date with our school administration.

Hello--
E. O. Smith and UConn will be hosting Connecticut Invitational VI on February 21st, in Storrs CT, with an IS set. This is out of your area but a reasonable drive for many teams, esp. from New York. Hope to see some of you out here!

Hello fellow NY/NJ quizbowl people, I have a question for the the general populace:

Given that the first Saturday of January is the 3rd and that many high schools won't be back in session from Winter break until the following Monday, would many (any?) teams be willing to go to a tournament held on the 3rd? For Mountain Lakes' winter tournament (due to a variety of reasons we likely won't be hosting in the fall), I am trying to decide between January 3 and January 17. December 13 is also a last resort option, I'd rather not go up against a NHBB date even if it is a site that doesn't usually draw many NJ teams.

Do any coaches/players have a general preference for either of the two dates? If it matters, pending NAQT approval, it would likely be an A-set.

I think January 17 is the date of NHBB NJ States.

This would indeed be an A-set, probably IS #141A (all five regular sets have been claimed for the state of New Jersey).

I just received confirmation from Dave Madden himself that Northern NJ NHBB is January 17 and that the NHBB website is being changed to reflect this.

Having figured that out, my initial question still stands, albeit somewhat altered - would January 3 (most schools probably not back in session yet) or January 24 (SAT subject tests and a tournament in DE with very small overlap) be better for most people?

Tentatively, NHBB will hold its Mid-Atlantic Championships at Princeton on A Set on March 21. This shouldn't conflict really with the Kings Park tournament, since we expect to also have A Set run on Long Island in early March.

The weekends are dwindling. Bergen Academies would really like to host a high school tournament in the spring. Should Bloomfield fall through again*, we'd like to use March 7 as our date. We're currently attempting to find a set we can use.

*-Is there any evidence that their team, well, exists? It's my understanding they cancelled last year because they didn't have anyone to help run it, and I've not heard of them competing or signing up to play anywhere yet this season.

A few quick updates from NHBB:
1. We're going to need to reschedule South Jersey at MonDon. I do have 3 days next week to go promote it in South Jersey, so as long as MonDon is cool with rescheduling, look for that to reappear at some point in February or early March.
2. Likewise in early March, Phillipsburg just let me know today that they want to host on March 7. Jon, I don't foresee this being an issue, since this will be on C Set, and everyone in North and Central Jersey will most likely gravitate to the Nov. 15 and 16 dates or Dec. 13 at White Plains (or Mon Don). Phillipsburg (aka Western New Jersey) will primarily be pitched to Northern PA schools (the Northern PA event will likely go to B Set) and schools in Phillipsburg's league who traditionally haven't played much outside their necks of the woods.
3. There's only space left for 1 more team at Torah Academy on 11/16. Though you can play the same set at Seton Hall the prior day - plenty of room there.
