2014 National Quizbowl Awards - Winners Posted

Post by Great Bustard »

NHBB is happy to sponsor the third annual National Quizbowl Awards for the 2013-2014 season. We once again will provide $1500 in prize money, plaques, and food at NASAT to recognize the nation's top students and coaches at the middle and high school level. Last year, the procedure for nominating, voting, and distributing the awards seemed to work well, so we'll stick with that basic approach pending reasonable suggestions from last year's nominating committee.

Here are the nominees for the awards, which will be given out at NASAT. Everyone is listed alphabetically - the vote totals from the nominating committee remain confidential so as not to influence the voting. Thanks to the nominating committee of Jeff Hoppes, Matt Jackson, Matt Weiner, and me (the same as last year's) for their help:

Edit June 18 - Champions have their names listed in bold for the specific awards

Top 9th grade player:
Bryant Cong, Bellarmine College Prep, San Jose, CA
NourEddine Hijazi, Sidney High School, Sidney, OH
Shub Mehta, Dorman High School, Roebuck, SC

Top 10th grade player:
Ethan Russo, LASA, Austin, TX (tie)
Cole Timmerwilke, Rockford Auburn High School, Rockford, IL
Corin Wagen, LASA, Austin, TX (tie)

National High School Player of the Year
Hidehiro Anto, Menlo School, Atherton, CA
Sam Blizzard, Northmont High School, Clayton, OH - National A Team Player
Carlo De Guzman, St. John's School, Houston, TX - National A Team Player
Alex Freed, LASA, Austin, TX
Kai Smith, Farragut High School, Farragut, TN
Nathan Weiser, LASA, Austin, TX - National A Team Player
Eric Xu, Western Albemarle High School, Charlottesville, VA - National Player of the Year
Ben Zhang, Ladue Horton Watkins High School, Ladue, MO - National A Team Player

National High School A Team (i.e. students who rank 1-4 in the High School Player of the Year Voting)
see above

National Middle School Player of the Year
Ansel Ahabue, Trickum Middle School, Lilburn, GA
Abdullah Akbar, St. Mark's School of Texas, Dallas, TX
Graham Brinson, T. H. Rogers School, Houston, TX
William Golden, Harmony School of Excellence, Houston, TX

National High School Coach of the Year
Jason Flowers, LASA, Austin, TX
David Jones, Northmont High School, Clayton, OH
David Nathan, St. John's School, Houston, TX
Noah Prince, IMSA, Aurora, IL
Geoffrey Thomas, Dorman High School, Roebuck, SC

National Middle School Coach of the Year
Michael Golden, Harmony School of Excellence, Houston, TX
Linda La Perre, Trickum Middle School, Lilburn, GA
Paul Mlakar, St. Mark's School of Texas, Dallas, TX

All awards carry a $100 prize, courtesy of NHBB, except the National High School Player of the Year which carries a $200 prize (think of this as $100 for making the A Team, and $100 for being the overall top player).

Nominating Procedure
Each nominating committee member will rank 3 players/coaches in order for each of these categories except high school player of the year - for that category, five names will be submitted. Rankings will be done on a (9-7) 5-3-1 basis based in order of their ranks from each nominator. I will then tally the votes and the top 3 players/coaches for each position will be listed as names on the official voting ballot. The exception to this is the High School Player of the Year, which will have its top 8 players (or if fewer than 8 names are listed by the nominators, then however many are in fact listed) listed. The nominees, but not the vote totals from the nominating committee will be announced by June 5. Nominators will submit their ballots after HSNCT concludes.

Voting Procedure
Voting will only be open to those who have experience with quizbowl on a national level. High and middle school players may not vote. Coaches may vote, including for students on their team, though coaches who are nominated will not have their votes counted for Coach of the Year in the level at which they coach. Those who wish to vote must do so between June 5 and June 8, either by sending me a private message here or emailing me at [email protected]. Everyone who votes will select only 1 player/coach for each category, except National High School Player of the Year - for that, select 4, and label them in order. They will be ranked 7-5-3-1 with the top overall vote getter being the National High School Player of the Year, and the next 3 highest scorers being on the National A team.
If you are voting, you may leave a category with which you are unfamiliar blank (edit - or vote for only 1-4 people in a given category) That is indeed preferable than casting an uninformed ballot. Voters are encouraged to review performances of those who are on the ballot - more weight of course should be given to recent National Championship performances than other results. Also, the nominating committee reserves the right to disallow ballots if we have reason to suspect that you are unfamiliar with the high school/middle school quizbowl community. We may also contact you to clarify this, if there is reason to suspect your awareness of quizbowl at a national level. Note that this does not mean that only people who organize on a national basis can vote, but rather that we want informed voters for a fair vote.

Also, in the interest of time, I am not going to be able to go through and post individual statlines, but I strongly encourage all voters to look up stat reports when considering their votes, especially here: http://www.naqt.com/stats/player-search.jsp and here http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/

You can also look up team and player results here: http://hdwhite.org/qb/stats/. This will search the hsquizbowl database for a team's results which may be better than searching for tournaments.

Congratulations to the 2014 National Quizbowl Award Winners! Their names have been confirmed in the original post (in bold). While voting tallies remain confidential for most awards, I can say that among those who voted for the category, William Golden was a unanimous selection for Middle School Player of the Year (the sole unanimous award recipient this year). In the National Player of the Year voting, Eric of course was first, Ben was second, Nathan was third, and Carlo and Sam tied for fourth. NHBB will certainly continue to sponsor this in future years too.
