In the past, no grand list of qualified teams was maintained, but you can get the information from each local tournament.

Go to this page and click on a tournament which has submitted its results. For example, the 2013 Lewis Cup lists both HSNCT and SSNCT qualifiers.

Can you give a list of the Non-NAQT state championships this year that have berths to HSNCT? I take it American Association of Schools in Central America Knowledge Bowl is one seeing as EIS in Honduras is going.

There are two different kinds of "berths" here:

1) Winning a non-NAQT state championship allows a team to qualify for HSNCT, but does not grant that team a reserved berth.

2) Winners of state championships or qualifiers using NAQT questions have reserved berths to HSNCT. Thus they may register when the field is full. If the state champion is already registered for HSNCT, the reserved berth is dissolved (and a team may be promoted into the field from the waitlist).

(EIS isn't actually either of these things; they applied for a wildcard after winning their local tournament.)

Here's our list of non-NAQT state championships. Let us know if we're missing a non-NAQT state championship that should qualify the winning team for HSNCT.

state (sponsor/question provider)
(many of these have multiple size classes that don't compete against each other; in those cases the winners of each class or division would be eligible to attend HSNCT)

Arkansas (AGQBA)
California (HSAPQ)
Colorado (Knowledge Bowl)
District of Columbia (HSAPQ)
Florida (Commissioner's Academic Challenge)*
Hawaii (It's Academic)
Illinois (IHSA)
Illinois (Masonic)
Kansas (KSHSAA)**
Kentucky (Governor's Cup)
Louisiana (LAAC)
Maryland (HSAPQ)
Massachusetts (HSAPQ)
Michigan (MSU Honors College)
Minnesota (Knowledge Bowl)
Nebraska (ESU)
Nevada (Clark County Varsity Quiz)
New Hampshire (NHQBL)
New York (HSAPQ)
North Carolina (NCATA)
Ohio (OAC)
Oklahoma (OAAC)
Oklahoma (OSSAA)
Oregon (SOU Brain Bowl)
Pennsylvania (PAC)
South Carolina (SCISA)
Virginia (VHSL)
Washington (Knowledge Bowl)
Wyoming (Wyoming Academic Challenge)

Canadian provinces (Reach for the Top provincials)

* This is a tournament for county-based teams, but it has sometimes been won by a team whose players all attend a single high school

** KSHSAA member schools may not attend the 2014 HSNCT

The Hyatt Regency O'Hare site meets the travel distance bylaw, but the HSNCT is not on the advisory list maintained by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
KSHSAA Scholars Bowl Manual 2013-14 wrote:Question 6: May school teams participate in national championship tournaments?

Answer: No, unless approved by the NASSP on its advisory list of contests and activities and subject to compliance with KSHSAA regulations.
(I'm curious whether any quizbowl tournament has ever been approved by the NASSP; if anyone else has dealt with this list, I would be interested to hear about it in the Kansas thread.)

I don't know if this is what you mean, but I feel like the MN Knowledge Bowl winners should get a qualification to nationals. I know there are two pyramidal state championships and an active circuit already, but it seems like Knowledge Bowl has a long tradition in the state and KB teams aren't willing or just don't bother participating in good quiz bowl formats.

Historically, we have not actively recruited these teams (both because Reach provincials are late in the season when there is little or no space in the HSNCT field, and because Reach usually happens the same weekend as HSNCT itself, so the champions will stay in Canada). One of these years we will hold HSNCT on some weekend that isn't Reach nationals; at that time, we will be in a much better position to recruit many more Canadian teams to attend.

If a separate Canadian HS nationals happened in the future, would NAQT plan to extend this invitation to Reach provincial champions?

If you missed this because you don't read the college forums, this is the side tournament happening on Saturday night during HSNCT - viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15760&p=279974#p279974

If the number of teams in the field drops below 256 (as of right now the field listing contains exactly 256 teams), will NAQT run a 256 team tournament with a few standby teams, or will there be 16+ standby teams that get into a field of 272?

We will run a 272-team tournament with as many standby teams as are needed to get there.

Doesn't this setup functionally let a bunch of teams (currently 16, it seems) jump into the HSNCT field for free, regardless of whether they qualified, just as long as they have the foresight to get on the standby list when the going looks good? That seems really non-ideal. And isn't 272 a much worse number for a power matching schedule, mathematically, than 256?

Yes and yes; but all of that is much more elegant than redoing all of our schedule planning at the last minute.

We have posted the schedule for the preliminary rounds, the schedule for the playoff rounds, and the playoff schedule in easier-to-visualize form. Initial card assignments will be posted late tomorrow night or early Saturday morning.

Some matchups in round 17 (the first round of the playoffs) are not yet known because they depend on the size of the two playoff brackets, which we won't know until the preliminary rounds are complete. The winners' bracket starts with at most 50 teams; the most likely number is 47. It is certain that 28 teams will be in the winners' bracket entering round 18. The top 6 to 12 teams (by Saturday record, then points per 20 tossups heard) will have byes in round 17; the most likely number is 9.

The playoffs as a whole will start with at most 106 teams; the most likely numbers are 100 and 101. It is certain that 48 teams will be in the losers' bracket entering round 18. It is most likely that 3 teams in the losers' bracket will have byes in round 17.
