Maryland Spring Tournament, 5/3/2014

Post by Nine-Tenths Ideas »

This is an announcement for The University of Maryland's Spring Classic High School Tournament 2014 at the University of Maryland, College Park. It will be held on the University's campus on Saturday. May 3rd.

The tournament will be written by members of the University's Academic Quiz team, with 20/20 rounds and a modified ACF distribution to be posted soon [one can expect it will not vary greatly from the standard distribution, though]. We are aiming for the reduced difficulty of the 2012 set, where average points per bonus never dipped below 15 [and hovered around 18 most of the time]. The set will be edited by myself, Isaac Hirsch, and Dan Puma.

The base cost for this tournament will be $65 per team and $60 for each subsequent team per school.

The following discounts are also available:
-$5/buzzer system
-$10/moderator

Rooms and meeting times are TBA once we reserve rooms. It is not unlikely the tournament will be held in Jiminez Hall.

For more information or registration, please e-mail me at [email protected]

A running field update will be kept on the bottom of this post.

Somehow the last Maryland Spring set never made it up on the archives; can Will or whoever it is take a look and try and add it?

I emailed it to Will a long time ago; if there's someone else who should be emailed, let me know.

EDIT: Here it is!

Hey folks, we might have to set a field cap soon, so keep registering! Right now we have 13-14 teams registered.

We're going to put an initial field cap at 24 due to both buzzer and staff limitations. Get those registrations in ASAP!

Also, we are going to have a fundraiser for the Maryland NASAT team during lunch. We will be selling slices of pizza for $2.00 and cans of soda for $1.00. If you and/or your team would like to participate in this please e-mail me at danjpuma at gmail.com, so I can get a handle on how much pizza and how many sodas we need. Thanks in advance to anyone who participates!

The field is full at 18 teams. If any additional teams register they will be placed on the waitlist.

EDIT: Also, we would love if registered teams could bring more buzzers to have plenty of backups.

So, we just had a team drop. We'd love to have 18 and not 17, so please let us know if it's possible for you to bring a (extra) team!

Quince Orchard is only bringing one team. I e-mailed a few days ago to indicate that, but I see we're still listed as bringing two, and it looks like that wasn't factored into the total...

Prelim stats are posted at: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... s/prelims/

The teams in Bracket Draymond Green all have additional forfeit victories over Bullis (8th, 0-7), who did not show up. SQBS did not like it when I recorded games as forfeits (it crashed), so I continued on without them. Perhaps I should not use a Mac anymore.

Playoff Stats: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... /playoffs/

Oakland Mills won two straight finals games to win the tournament. Centennial A finished 2nd, despite what the stats may say.

Thanks to everyone for coming!

Hello,

Loudoun County is shown as having 165 bonus points for their game against Centennial in the playoffs; can you look over the score sheet for that game?

Thank you!

Props to the Maryland team for running this in a timely manner. The set was also quite entertaining.

If this set doesn't get posted on the packet archive, I'd like a copy as well.

Congrats to our winners Oakland Mills, who overcame a one game Centennial advantage and won two straight games to claim victory! Thanks to everyone for coming out; we were all super impressed by this field. You guys are awesome. We're going to get a discussion subforum set up to discuss the set, so everyone should join that. Unfortunately, we will not be releasing the set as we are hoping to find mirrors for the set in the fall of next year. Again, thanks for coming out and I hope everyone had a good time.

Great tournament, always fun to have a tournament at UMD. I would also like a copy sent if possible. I enjoyed the set and thought it was tough, but in a good way. I'll post more on the set thread. Thanks again!
