ARTIST @ WKU (Bowling Green, KY, 04/05/2014)

Post by mriggle »

The WKU Academic Competition Club will be hosting the Academic Red Towel Invitational Spring Tournament (ARTIST) on Saturday, April 5, 2014. I, Matthew Riggle, will be the tournament director. Teams of all levels from Kentucky, Tennessee, or anywhere else are most welcome to attend! We'd love to have a competitive field consisting of some of our regular teams and hopefully a few new faces!

Location: Cherry Hall, Western Kentucky University (Bowling Green, KY)

Questions: We will be mirroring LIST IV, a question set produced by the team at Ladue Horton Watkins HS in Missouri. Specific details about this year's set can be found here, and previous iterations of the set can be found on the packet archive (2011, 2012, 2013).

Fee: $70 per team
$20 moderator discount
$10 scorekeeper discount
$10 out-of-state discount (non-Kentucky teams only)
Minimum fee: $30

Every school that attends must bring a working buzzer system.

Payment: Please pay on the day of the tournament, rather than sending a check ahead of time. Our campus mail has a notorious history of losing checks, so it's much easier for all parties if you simply hand us payment in person. We will accept cash or checks made out to the Academic Competition Club. We're willing to be flexible, but if we don't have payment at least two weeks after the event, we will attach a $20 fee to your bill.

Format: Rounds will consist of 20 tossups and 20 bonuses (non-bounceback). Powers and negs will both be used. As far as the schedule, we'll use something similar to our format in the past; namely, morning pool play followed by afternoon rebracketing into new pools based on morning performance. Specific details will be determined closer to the date of the tournament once we have a better idea of the field size.

For now, the field cap will be set at 24 teams, but we might expand the field at some point pending the availability of staffers, rooms, buzzers, etc. Registration will be first come, first serve, and we'll utilize a waiting list if necessary.

To register, or if you have any questions, send us an email at [email protected].

An addition to the tournament announcement at the top of this thread: there will also be a $10 discount available for teams who are new to good quizbowl.

Because it seems that many teams have a conflict of some sort on April 5, we're considering moving this event to May 3. Could any interested teams weigh in and let us know which of these dates would be preferable?

It's looking like the teams already registered can't deal with a May 3 date, so we'll be staying at April 5. It would be really nice if more people signed up.

I implore any interested team to consider attending this tournament and let us know ASAP. We run really efficient tournaments where you get lots of games for the money you spend, and if there's any way you can send a team, I think it will be worth your time and money. Just so people know, this tournament is still happening and will be fun. I hear LIST is a really good question set, and we usually host fun tournaments. We lowered the entry fee, so it's only $40 to register, and more people should definitely sign up.

Congratulations to Gatton A, who defeated Glasgow 525-185 in the final to win ARTIST. Both teams were very impressive in the final, which featured a total of 15 powers (including 12 powers in the last 12 questions of the match). Full stats including the final can be found here.

Also, congratulations to the top 6 scorers (through the prelim games):
1) Olivia Kiser, Glasgow, 114 PPG
2) Jack Zhang, "The Prodigy", 102 PPG
3) Alex Malone, Gatton A, 64.5 PPG
4) Will Walters, Gatton A, 54.5 PPG
5) Austin Smith, Gatton A, 30.5 PPG
6) Libby Foster, North Oldham, 30 PPG

Thanks to everyone who showed up to play this tournament, and also thanks to the following people who helped staff this tournament: Nick Conder, Dr. Guy Jordan, Jason Thompson, Cole Phelps, Mark Reeves, and Michael Evans.

We hope to see everyone back next semester at the tournaments we host; we'd love to have everyone back!
