Where Are You Going Next Year? [Collegiate edition, 2014]

Post by Adventure Temple Trail »

It's starting to be that time of year when people start to hear back from transfer applications, grad school apps, job offers, and the like. So if you're a current college player or member of the college quizbowl community and you have a change of plans ahead, here's a thread to post where you'll be next. Please post only if you have something definite; as in the past, no one will like you if you use this thread to brag about how you still need to decide between Law School H and Law School Y or what have you. But I'm also interested to see what new metropolitan areas people are going to for non-student things, so people know who to reach out to as potential staff/open tournament teammates; feel free to post if you're going from school to a non-school entity somewhere else.

I'm going to be employed in the Madison, WI area come fall and am not planning on being back in school for at least a year or two. I imagine I will still play (resp. staff) nearby open (resp. closed) tournaments for a while, or at least until the weather kills me.

I don't know if high school quizbowl is a thing in the vicinity of Madison, but if it is, feel free to drop me a line if you need staff for a tournament. (It looks like UW-Madison hosts some NAQT stuff?)

I'll be employed in the San Francisco Bay Area and am willing to staff things in the area. I'll probably play any open tournaments that happen to be around. This fall, I'll be applying to law schools, and I intend to play at whichever university I eventually attend.

I'm not 100% sure of my plans yet, but I'm likely going to be in the St. Louis area either fully employed and staffing local tournaments and playing some open stuff or just taking a year off and applying to graduate schools for museum studies. I'm pretty sure I'll stay involved in quizbowl no matter where my future takes me.

Well after a decade of deliberation, I came to realize that a life of academia is not in fact what I wanted. I'll either be at Georgia Tech or the University of Louisiana next Fall getting my MS in computer science and having fun being broke. As usual, I will continue to play quizbowl.

Editx2: Looks like next year I'll be eligible to play solo for a small seminary or to play for UCF. Either one. I'm weighing my options but leaning towards UCF for most major tournaments.

If "a 70 minute drive down rural I-90" is your definition of "vicinity," then there are a number of tournaments in Rockford, Illinois that could use your assistance. :)

My quizbowl career is over after I graduate. It's been a fun 8 years, and I might get dragged out of retirement to play an open or something, but it's time to move on. As a way to cement my legacy, I'm writing a "fun" tournament that I want to be run sometime in 2015.

I'll be out of school/quizbowl for at least next year, but there's a high probability that I'm in grad school somewhere by 2016.

I accepted a permanent faculty position at a university in Nashville, so I will be living there for the foreseeable future. I should be available to staff local tournaments.

I've decided that the humanities research life is not for me, so I'll be moving back to Richmond after graduation. VCU claims that I will know in 6-8 weeks whether I'll be pursuing an MT in English or frantically job hunting, but either way my playing days are over as of last spring. I plan to stay in PACE, NAQT, and HSAPQ until I'm a high school coach, and I'll be around for staffing purposes for the foreseeable future.

Maybe, and maybe not, but it's not like a Ph.D. in history is going to drastically improve your life.

In less serious business, I will continue playing opens as usual, although it's likely that I my base of operations will shift from Pittsburgh in the next year.

I spun off (most) of the discussion of graduate school into its own thread. Continue discussing where you're going to be next year in this one.

Since people have been asking: I plan to go to University of Minnesota for graduate study in ecology.

EDIT: Will likely play but probably somewhat less.

I will be gainfully employed back in DC starting shortly after graduation. I will be emphatically out of school for at least the next two years, during which time I am happy to read/staff a few times per year and play difficult opens.
