BHSAT XXIII at Yale (1 February 2014, New Haven, CT)

Post by vinteuil »

Hi! I'm happy to announce the 23rd iteration of the Bulldog High School Academic Tournament (BHSAT XXIII), on 1 February 2014 at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut! As usual, BHSAT will be a high-quality tournament with a competitive field.

As per tradition, BHSAT will be house-written by members of Yale University's quizbowl team, under the guidance of our fearless leader, Matt Jackson. Difficulty should be within the range of the previous, highly acclaimed BHSAT sets, which can be found at quizbowlpackets.com, with much attention paid to copyediting and accessibility, while maintaining an emphasis on fun and creativity. More information about the set can be found at this post.

The day of the tournament, registration will begin at 8AM, opening meeting at 8:45AM, and the first round by 9AM (hopefully!). Like last year, the tournament will take place in William L. Harkness Hall (WLH, not to be confused with other buildings with the name "Harkness!"). We expect for every team in attendance to be able to play at least 10 rounds.

Fees and registration information for the tournament are as follows:

Payment

Base fee: $90
Working buzzer system: -$5 each
Moderator: -$5 each
Additional teams: -$5 each
Travel discount: -$10 for traveling over 200 miles to New Haven
Minimum fee per team: $60

Checks made out to Y. Student Academic Competitions (not "Yale Student Academic Competitions"!) should be given to us on the day of the tournament, or can be sent out to:

Registration

Given a recent trend in tournament fields filling up very quickly in this region, we will be doing registration for BHSAT XXIII via a Google form, which will be made available/sent out on 15 December. Emails and forum posts before or after that date will not count as official registrations.

We're capping the field at the exciting high number of 30 teams, and we'll keep a wait list for any registrations beyond that number. We will provide lunch for staffers in addition to the fee discount for your team, so if you're a coach or experienced staffer in the area, we'd love to have you!

Registered Field [1/27/14]:
Brookline (1,0,0)
E.O. Smith (2,2,0)
High Tech (2,0,0)
Hingham (1,2,0)
Hunter (4,2,0)
Irvington (1,2,0)
Mountain Lakes (3,2,1)
North Babylon (2,3,0)
Preston (1,1,1)
Ridgewood (2,2,0)
St. Joseph's (2,2,0)
Suffield Academy (1,1,0)
Thomaston (1,1,0)

Running Totals: 23 teams, 19 buzzers, 2 staffers

Looking forward to seeing all of you in February!

Hey everyone, sorry to keep you all waiting like this, but between finals and, well, finals, I haven't been able to get my act together to put together BHSAT registration—so that will now open on this Tuesday, 17 December. Sorry again!

Edit: the form can be found here and will open at midnight.

Does/will this tournament have any level of PACE affiliation?

We are indeed Platinum affiliated with PACE, meaning that the top 25% of teams in the field will qualify for the 2014 PACE NSC.

Congratulations to High Technology High School A (Lincroft, NJ), the champions of the 2014 Bulldog High School Academic Tournament! High Tech defeated St. Joseph A in an engaging final 320-275. Thanks go out to Andrew Ibendahl of Mountain Lakes, Linda Youngren of Preston, Kara Vo of Ex-Ridgewood, and Chip Horton for volunteering to staff; thanks especially to Coach Pirrie of E.O. Smith, who volunteered on his own this morning to fill in for a last-minute staffer no-show and made our day run much more smoothly as a result. Shoutouts also to the two freshmen who made this tournament go; Jacob Reed for TDing and Eryk Banatt for deftly managing the control room during the day.

We will be opening a discussion subforum for discussing the BHSAT 2014 question set; after it comes into being, attendees of this site are welcome to join by going to the Control Panel, selecting Usergroups, finding "BHSAT 2014 discussion," and hitting "Join selected". Those who don't have an account and/or don't want to post there should feel free to email me at [email protected] if they have any questions, comments, concerns, errors to note, or #strugs to #strug about with this set -- we certainly plan to revise and improve the set so it goes more smoothly at future sites, so I welcome and encourage any/all commentary towards that purpose.

I do want to make a public apology or the extremely haggard proofreading, or lack thereof, which our set had today. I know this really isn't an excuse for it, but our unusually-early tournament date this year ended up compressing our usual time frame more than expected. I've already noted a lot of the small errors to be fixed for future sites, and I'll be going through the packet files to get a lot of them taken care of later this weekend.
