Centennial Tournament - December 8, 2013 (Ellicott City,MD)

Post by eseifte1 »

This is our first announcement for the Centennial High School Tournament in Ellicott City, Maryland to be held on Sunday December 8, 2013 at 8:30 AM (one day after the SATs).

For our 9th annual tournament, we will be using NAQT set IS-131A. This question set is an INTRODUCTORY set written to accommodate new players, so this tournament will be ideal for teams new to quiz bowl or new members of established teams. These questions can also help to hone rapid buzzing skills for more experienced teams and players.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend, even the most experienced teams. Like last year, we are planning to have a novice field composed of teams with 9th and 10th graders or teams of any age new to Quizbowl and a varsity field composed of experienced teams. The novice field will have its own trophies but will not be eligible for the NAQT and PACE championship tournaments. Obviously teams can elect to participate in the varsity regardless of players' age and experience. We are using this format in order to avoid the 660 to 10 scores in mismatched contests that are frustrating for all involved.

We will seek NAQT and PACE qualification and keep you posted on our rating.

Like last year, we are expecting all teams to stay for the rounds after lunch, and we will require reregistration at lunch to verify afternoon participation.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and we will provide our traditional breakfast banquet. For those teams wishing to stay on site for lunch pizza will be sold at registration.

We will have a coaches/parents' round during lunch with fossils/minerals as prizes, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Howard County Special Olympics.

The cost for teams participating in the tournament is $70 for the first team and $55 for each extra team from the same school. Teams can bring a working buzzer for a $10 discount (but only one buzzer set per team entered).

Centennial High School is located at 4300 Centennial Lane, Ellicott City, MD 21042

To register, e-mail [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzers, e-mail address, and telephone number where we can contact you on the day of the tournament in case of inclement weather. Feel free to share this announcement with other teams that might be interested in attending.

The Centennial tournament has received Gold certification from PACE: this means that the top 20% of the varsity bracket teams will be eligible for the PACE National Tournament in the DC area in May. The top 15% of the varsity bracket teams will be eligible for the NAQT National Tournament.

This tournament will be held on Sunday December 8, 2013 at 8:30 AM (one day after the SATs).

For our 9th annual tournament, we will be using NAQT set IS-131A. In view of the large number of middle school entrants, we will offer fossil prizes to the middle school team that places highest in our tournament.

With the impending Thanksgiving holiday in less than 2 weeks, we are closing registration on Friday November 22. We have 59 teams registered at this point and we will cap around 64. We will institute a wait-list after November 22 to account for the inevitable dropouts at the last minute.

How is the possible inclement weather going to affect the tournament? I assume it will begin as scheduled, but will the threat of snow and ice shorten it? Hopefully the storm has no impact, this was a fun tournament to attend last year.

After HCPSS cancelled the tournament after prelims, trophies were given out based on PPB Manheim Town Ship A "won" with 24.86PPB, OM got "2nd" with 24.79 PPB, and WJ got "3rd" with something around 24PPB.

A big thank you to all the teams, coaches, and volunteers who braved the elements today to attend our tournament. Although we had to end the tournament after 5 rounds, we hope that everyone had an enjoyable time, and that the ride home was not too onerous. Congratulations to Varsity Teams First Place Manheim Township A Second Place Oakland Mills A, Third Place Walter Johnson A, Fourth Place Quince Orchard A, Fifth Place Montgomery Blair A, Sixth Place Richard Montgomery A, Seventh Place Langley, and Eighth Place Montgomery Blair B. You can go to the HS Quizbowl Centennial post for a link to all the statistics. As far as we're concerned all 8 teams should qualify for NAQT based on a 60 team field. PACE would look at the top 5 teams from a 24 team varsity bracket. However, since we were unable to complete the tournament NAQT and/or PACE might not consider it official, but we will appeal this if it occurs. Congratulations to Novice teams First Place Richard Montgomery B, Second Place Richard Montgomery C, Third Place, Quince Orchard B, Fourth Place St Anselm;s A, Fifth Place Longfellow Middle School A, our top middle school team, Sixth Place Severna Park B, Seventh Place Independence Middle School, and Eighth Place Manheim Township C. Seeabove for the link to the statistics.
Again, thanks so much for coming. It would have been very difficult to find a date to reschedule this event, and we weren't sure up until the last minute just how bad the weather would be. Hope to see you at upcoming tournaments and that you arrived safely home.

And Blair A actually had the highest PPB of all at 24.93 but was dropped to fifth thanks to a less-than-stellar performance against Manheim Township A.

The top eight teams from this event will indeed qualify for HSNCT.

Would our 9th team (by record 3-2 and PPB) qualify also with 58 teams + 2 scabs?

I sure hope so! Technically by NAQT rules the top 15% qualify, which means the top 9 teams qualify. My team, Phoenixville, 9th team, was oh so close to being 5th or 6th by record and PPB but lost a game on the final tossup to another qualifying team. Looking at the stats, there is a clear drop-off after 9th place, so I think we should. So basically, I'm inclined to think yes, but my team is anxiously awaiting the official answer to the same question!

I feel for the Blair team. Robbed of the round-robin by the weather, they could have won the tournament. This is why we do an afternoon round-robin; clearly bracketing played a role. When 6 varsity teams dropped out the morning of the tournament , Blair and Manheim (2 stellar teams) wound up head-to-head.

These appear to have overwritten last year's stats (and been posted to the database listing for the 2012 tournament.)

EDIT: And the same thing for the novice division.
