Will SSNCT happen if the field (48 teams) isn't reached.

48 is a tentative field cap, not a minimum. We will run SSNCT as long as there is a reasonably competitive field. (Note that there are quite a few states that haven't even qualified any teams for SSNCT yet.)

Call me insane (given the response this seems to be getting from many (most?) other schools) but I'm looking forward to this. My school has 500 students in it from grades 9-12. We are quite tiny compared to the average high school. We have to play teams from schools four or more times larger than us throughout the year. It's a nice change of pace to play teams our size for a change. When we used to attend the HSNCT in Atlanta, we always were more focused on getting at least four wins on Saturday so that we could get to the small schools playoff on Sunday. Now I don't mind having to play teams from large schools throughout the year - that's just part of the sport. But I don't see the fun in getting mauled by big schools at Nationals. Nationals is supposed to be a special event. It's not just another tournament (it's a lot more expensive and takes a lot more of a time commitment).

Has there been any more discussion or clarification about where the difficulty of the SSNCT questions will fall on the current "NAQT Difficulty Spectrum?"

Roughly equal to IS?
Harder than IS, but easier than Div. II SCT?
Harder than Div. II SCT, but easier than HSNCT?
Roughly equal to HSNCT?

I just want to know the target difficulty to be preparing my team.

We expect that the SSNCT will be somewhat more difficult than an IS set, but easier than Division II SCT.

Wow! 28 teams so far. That escalated quickly. We're very much looking forward to this!

Just to gauge the "success" of the situation, I noticed that many of the current field has never competed in HSNCT before. Congrats on bringing in more teams.

So if you're the only small school in a tournament, you can automatically qualify for SSNCT,as seen here ?

So, with all respect to Miami Community Charter, which should be encouraged to continue playing quiz bowl as much as possible, what's the benefit of getting a brand new team that put up 5 ppb and finished in last place at its local tournament to spend $545 for the entry fee, $330.50 per person for a flight and $89 per room for two nights (likely two rooms) to go to a tournament where they likely will do poorly? We're talking about $3000 out of the pocket of a completely brand new team.

I thought that, even if you are the only Small School, you would have to at least finish in the top 50% of a field to qualify for SSNCT. I'm with Fred. I mean absolutely no disrespect to ANY team, but automatically inviting a team that went 0-6, averaged less than 25 ppg, and 5 ppb sort of calls the integrity of a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP into question, especially when some teams who come from areas with many Small Schools have to struggle to qualify.

Again, I wish MCC all the luck in the world and I hope that they continue to play and improve. But, I don't understand how they qualified for SSNCT without winning a single match....

This was the rule for small-school qualification for the 2013 and earlier HSNCTs. For the first year of SSNCT, we decided to be more lenient. It is likely that the qualification system will be adjusted for the 2015 SSNCT.

As I continue preparing my teams for this event, a couple more questions have come up. I thought I would pose these questions in this public forum, as they are pertinent to all attending teams:

1) Will there be computational math at this tournament? If so, will it be only in bonuses?
2) Will this event follow the same subject distribution as HSNCT?

Thanks!

In terms of the format of SSNCT, is there any more detailed information available? For instance, is the card system from HSNCT going to be used ?

Also, how many games can we expect to play at the tournament?

This has now been finalized.
naqt.com wrote:On Saturday, the 50 teams will be divided into five preliminary brackets of 10 teams each. Each of those brackets will play a round-robin schedule (9 games). Each team will also have 1 bye round on Saturday. Every team with a winning record (5–4 or better) will advance to Sunday playoffs.

On Sunday, the playoff teams will play a double-elimination tournament; either 8 or 9 rounds will be played, depending on whether the champion finishes with a playoff loss or not.

I have no idea if anything is available to be run, but I can staff if needed (I don't have the time or energy to take the lead in anything). Aside from actual side events that could be mirrored, people could also run an informal, free (let me be clear--very informal and free) playing of some already run sets, like history bowl or theme packets or whatever.
