DRAGOON at Yale (11/16/13)

Post by violin321 »

Hi everyone! I'm super excited to announce that Yale Student Academic Competitions will be hosting a mirror of DRAGOON on Saturday, November 16, 2013. We are also tentatively planning to run a mirror of Eyes That Do Not See during lunch and/or following the main tournament. Further information to come.

Location and Transportation:

The tournament will be held in the Hall of Graduate Studies (HGS) on Yale's main campus (see map here), located at 320 York Street, New Haven, CT.

Many Yale parking lots within two to three blocks of HGS are open to the public on weekends for free, including Lots 51, 77, 78, and 78W, shown here. Street parking is also available, as is garage parking in the Grove Street and Audubon Court garages, shown here.

Those arriving at New Haven Union Station can take a taxi (costs about $8; call 203-777-7777 if there are no cabs in sight), walk just over a mile to campus, or ride the Yale Shuttle (departs Union Station roughly every twenty to thirty minutes). Feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] for further information about transportation logistics.

We plan to start the tournament at 9:30 A.M. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early so that the tournament can run on time. Let me know if any traffic or transportation problems arise the day of!

Fees:

Base fee: $120 per team
Buzzer discount: -$5 per operative buzzer system with at least eight working buzzers
Moderator discount: -$10 per competent moderator
Travel discount: -$10 per 180 miles traveled, one-way, according to Google Maps
Minimum fee per team: $80
New team discount: All teams from schools new to quizbowl need only pay the minimum fee of $80. Schools that have not played a quizbowl tournament for at least the past four years qualify for this discount. If you think your school qualifies despite having played a quizbowl tournament in the past four years, contact me.

Checks should be given to us on the day of the tournament or sent to:
Y Student Academic Competitions
c/o Jacob Wasserman
P.O. Box #204762
Yale University
New Haven, CT 06520

NOTE: Checks should be made out to "Y Student Academic Competitions." Checks should NOT be addressed to "Yale Student Academic Competitions." Teams needing an invoice should request one in advance.

Registration:

This will be a closed tournament which any team of students enrolled at a given college or university may play representing that college or university. No mixed teams or non-students will be allowed. High school teams are allowed to play as long as they consist only of students from the same school. The field will be capped at 16 teams.

To register, please email me at [email protected] with:
~ the number of teams, buzzers, and/or staff you are bringing
~ the discounts you qualify for
~ whether or not your team needs an invoice
~ your preferred email address
~ a phone number at which your team can be contacted on the day of the tournament

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any additional questions or concerns. We hope to see you at Yale!

Edit: Please see the second post for the field. - Mgmt.

So I'm going to continue with something I sort of brought up in the ACF Fall thread and mention that while it's great to so many active teams in the northeast, I certainly hope that it does not turn into a routine thing where if you don't register for a tournament a month in advance you'll be locked out because the field is full. Is anything being done to expand the field? I could have sworn that a post at one point mentioned a house team-certainly that could be disbanded to create some field space and presumably provide a few more staffers.

Hey, Saajid. Per my advice, Haohang's been updating the field in the second post. When a user who doesn't yet have 7+ posts edits the first post in a thread, the entire thread disappears until the post is re-approved. I've gone ahead and removed the original field update from the first post to eliminate confusion; you'll find a much more current one in the second.

That explains why the field (and the whole second post) was gone. Thanks for explaining.

The volunteering of much-appreciated additional staffers by MIT and Dartmouth has allowed us to expand the DRAGOON field to include one MIT team and the first NYU team; if any more space opens up it will go to NYU B, followed by the other teams on the waitlist. Further registrations will still be added to the waitlist.

If there have been any status changes among teams in the field, please let me know ASAP!

Cornell dropped, so Princeton is now in the field.

Also, we will for sure be mirroring Eyes, so let me know if you're interested in playing!

Middlebury has dropped from the field, meaning that there is now an open spot! If any teams would like to play DRAGOON at Yale, here's your chance to register!

Dartmouth has dropped to 1 team. As there is now a nice number of teams in the field, I'm going to close registrations and cap the field at 16.

Quick results: Penn A (Eric/Saajid/Dallas/Patrick) (11-1) beat Yale House A (me) (10-2) in a one-game final to take the gold. Harvard and MIT round out the top four. Rounds of Eyes were played. Stephen Liu is quite good at looking at art. Expect stats and/or a fuller results post some time tomorrow.

Eyes: during lunch, we split into two rooms ("regular" and "uber-competitive" or something) and played some rounds (30 TUs in regular; 40 TUs in uber-competitive). After the tournament, we finished off the set in one room (tossups 41-100 + extras). Stats:

Lunch, regular (30 tossups)
Wilton: 1/5/3 = 50
Will Holub-Moorman: 2/1/1 = 35
Anderson Wang: 0/4/3 = 25
Stephen Eltinge: 0/3/2 = 20
Rob Pond: 1/2/5 = 10
John: 0/2/2 = 10
York Chen: 0/1/3 = -5

Lunch, uber-competitive (40 tossups)
Stephen Liu: 6/6/3 = 135
Matt Jackson: 3/4/1 = 80
Aaron Cohen: 1/4/1 = 50
Nick Jensen: 3/1/3 = 40
Aidan Mehigan: 2/3/4 = 40
Doug Yetman: 1/2/3 = 20
Jacob Reed: 1/0/3 = 0

After-tournament (60+10 tossups, except where noted otherwise)
Stephen Liu: 17/14/10 = 345
Nick Jensen: 2/6/2 = 80
Will Holub-Moorman: 2/5/1 = 75
Wilton: 2/3/2 = 50
Aidan: 5/4/14 = 45 (or something; this might be wrong)
Eric: 1/0/1 = 10 (off of 7 tossups)

I don't know where the main tournament stats are at the moment, but they should presumably appear somewhere.

This tournament happened! Congrats to Penn A for beating Yale A in a one game final to win. Stats exist! Thanks to our statskeeper, Laurence Li! Please let me know if there are any problems.

Thanks oodles to all of our staff--YSAC members, Daniel Rothenberg of MIT, Cameron Orth of Dartmouth, Nolan Esser formerly of Chicago, and Matt Hoffer-Hawlik and Steffi Weinraub, both formerly of Yale. Particular gratitude goes to Ashvin Srivatsa for running Eyes and putting together the stats for that, and Matt Jackson for being an awesome captain.

Thanks to all the teams that came out and played this weekend!

Despite playing in every single one of our games yesterday, Chris Horng is mysteriously absent from Columbia A's stats.
