Old-Timey Guerilla QB Event - Pittsburgh, 11/23/2013
I've been thinking that it might be nice to have a side event for Arrabal, which will presumably be a rather short event and we'll all be hanging out in Pittsburgh anyway. So, people attending the Pittsburgh site of Arrabal (and other people interested in the following)...
Do you have any interest in each writing 5/5, and bringing said 5/5 packet with you to the tournament?
(Obviously, people not even coming to Pitt could also volunteer to write 5/5 and we could incorporate those as well - by either combining four such submissions, or using them as the 5/5 for deadbeats who show up and want to play without questions)
The only rule is that you can only write a maximum 1/1 of any subject (you can only write 1/1 of: science, history, lit, myth, philosophy, soc science, art, classical music, religion, pop culture, etc.). Then, we draft teams and you combine your 5/5 with your three teammates (or maybe two teammates, depending on how many people want to play)...and read that as your packet.
Note: We'd need an agreed-upon difficulty level - not so much for tossups, but to try to avoid the ridiculousness of wild swings in bonus difficulty. Let's say "ACF Nats difficulty" for bonuses. Tossups - do whatever you want, but obviously answerable tossups are somewhat preferrable to utterly unanswerable ones.
I think this would require nearly universal participation of the above folks to be worth pursuing. Who's interested?
Suggested directions for those writing questions:
Put all five of your tossups on one page. Number them 1 through 5. Put all five of your bonuses on another page. Number them 1 through 5. (Do what you need to do to fit everything on one page - reduce margins as far as possible, use 10 point font, etc).
Print out the two pages, and make at least 6 copies of each (shouldn't be a ton of work) - bring the copies to the tournament. Because people are likely to forget to bring their stuff, please also email the questions to Mike Cheyne as well, prior to coming to the tournament.
If you're writing but not actually coming to the tournament - just email your questions to Mike Cheyne.
Here's a sign-up sheet for people to add their name to, if you agree to commit to writing 5/5 for this event:

I'd compile packets (if this is possible) and even write some stuff to round out delinquent packets.

I like this idea but I'm sorry to say I'm swamped with work + other writing/editing commitments. If this happens regardless and without my contribution, I will contribute to the beer fund.

Up above, I've added a sign-up sheet for people to add their name to, if you agree to commit to writing 5/5 for this event.
I've also added some directions to the first post for how to bring your 5/5 - I think it would be most efficient and most awesome if people would physically print out the pages, and bring them with them to the tournament.

Re: Old-Timey Guerilla QB Event - Pittsburgh, 11/23/2013
This sounds like fun, and I'll gladly contribute. But I wonder whether playing the questions as a shootout (with the authors of the 5/5s alternating as readers) isn't the best way to go with the number of people likely to contribute. If there are only 4-6 teams worth of players, the questions you'd miss out on from the other authors of your packet would comprise something like 15-20% of the total questions written.

Re: Old-Timey Guerilla QB Event - Pittsburgh, 11/23/2013
Yeah, we can fiddle with the format as people please. Another possibility would be to have three-person teams and 15/15 packets, which would mean missing less questions....but retain a format more like actual tossup-bonus quizbowl.

I'd love to do this, but I hope it would be ok for me to play as a deadbeat; I'm not sure if I'll have any time to write for this.

I'm still not sure if I'm going to Arrabal, so I'm not putting my name on the spreadsheet yet, but if I go, I will definitely write and play.

Reminder - please email your 5/5 packets to Mike Cheyne.
And, if there's anyone who is going to write stuff for this and isn't on the sign-up sheet, please put your name on the sign-up sheet.

In interest of disclosure, nobody's sent me anything yet (aside from two questions from Biff Arthur), although I understand the nature of the beast is that people write these things late.

I just sent Mike Cheyne a third question. Unless you want this tournament to be played entirely on a half packet of questions that I wrote at 1 AM, you better step up and write.

My computer died and is out for repairs, but I will do my best to finish these by Friday, contingent on my computer being fixed by Thursday. I say this now as a warning that I might not finish everything on time. However, 3/0 is already written.

I both powermarked and superpowermarked mine, but if you want to ignore them to be consistent, then I'm happy with that.

I didn't say anything about powermarking, so I'm going to assume no powers.
Please remember to bring your questions in hard form if at all possible (with at least 5 copies - see instructions in the first post)
I think we'll probably have around 12-14 5/5 packets, if everyone who's told me they'll write actually writes. I think 15 packets would be really nice - if any two people would like to collaborate on a 5/5 packet, that's okay too. please let me know.

I guess I should mention - as Jerry mentions in the email he sent out to people, this event will probably take place on Saturday evening right after Arrabal.
