Duke Academic Festival (tentative date)

Post by First Chairman »

After a lot of haranging on dates, the tentative date is February 26 (Saturday).

We are also looking into running NCOAST on March 26, so please let me know if there are any conflicts on the schedule for this.

I presume that's February and March 25??? The 26th is a Sunday both months.

Virginia High School League States are on Feb 25.

There is a good chance Maggie Walker, TJHSST, and others such as Spotswood and Charlottesville will not be able to attend your tournament on Feb. 25.

I knew there was something weird about that date.

Of course on my calendar, the following weekend is Duke-Carolina... then Ohio Academic Decathlon... hmm...

Would there be objections to a REALLY late schedule? DAF in late March, then NCOAST ... I hesitate to think when I could run that, but if someone wants to host it in late April??? (thinking why not NCSSM???).

It's possible, but the local (NC) schedule is getting very crowded, very rapidly:

Feb 4 Robinson Invitational (Concord) [Duke home game]
Feb 11 No Buzzer Bowl (Cardinal Gibbons)
Feb 18 High IQ Bowl (Grimsley)
Feb 25 current date DAF
Mar 4 [Duke home game]
Mar 11 Right Triangle Open (Raleigh Charter) [Duke spring break]
Mar 18 NCSU Red/White Bowl [Duke spring break]
Mar 25 PLQB Districts; current date of NCOAST
(See the NC area event schedule).

At some point of course, it may be necessary to schedule over something in the area, even given the potential conflicts. It's definitely not something I'm looking forward to, but there may be no choices.

What a problem to have. Did we ever think we would have too many events going on in NC at the same time?

I'm in favor of more events and not fewer... especially if it's more quality events. If it's a problem of our own making, it's a great problem to have.

When I was in high school there were hardly any tournaments in NC for us to go to besides High-Q (defunct) and Library (will be defunct soon). I'm glad there's more opportunities for the kids, even if I'm just the coach now.

So tentatively Duke Academic Festival is on March 24. Figuring out how to do NCOAST in late April. Any suggestions are welcome.

For the remaining places offering PLQB, that will put district directly against NCOAST, so you could lose some solid teams. However, you would lose fewer if you put the April meet the same day as the state PLQB, considering there will only be 8 teams at it.

Well, we're going ahead with DAF on March 25... sorry it has to go up against districts, but hopefully next year it won't be a problem.

That puts NCOAST into late April, and I'm seeking a host site for that. I'd like to try NCSSM since they are hosting PACE NSC, so hopefully that can be a "dry run" for me.
