Triacontakaipentagonline (12/21/13)

Post by Matt Weiner »

Because the first Triacontakaipentagon was such a rousing success, let's have a sequel.

Like the summer edition, this tournament will be a totally guerilla (that is, 100% unedited, free of charge, and whatever "casual" may mean) tournament. It will held on Saturday 12/21, online at the #quizbowl channel, in advance celebration of IRC Festivus, from noon (eastern) until whenever we run out of packets.

This tournament will require you to write a 35-tossup, no-bonus packet, containing 1 question representing the subject matter of each of the 35 side tournaments below. Please read for some slight changes from the original distribution based on things that didn't go over well at the original tournament.

Distribution

Category groupings are provided solely for your convenience and are not meant to bind you to any one interpretation of what these side tournaments might have contained beyond what was announced. E.g., your question on India can be on Indian music or an Indian scientist, it doesn't have to be on Indian history as quizbowl would normally define it, and so forth for other categories listed. However, you should make a "good faith" attempt to write to the meaning of the category--write a creative question on Indian culture instead of writing a tossup on Grape Ape to spite the distribution. Don't do things like write a tossup on the band Arrested Development when you know it means the TV show, because five other people will have your same "clever" idea and the result will be stupid.

Any questions on or referencing anime in your packet will not be counted towards player scores and will cause you to be disqualified from winning the tournament.

The mantra here is: "Write on creative and difficult things that are too weird or too hard to include in any other quizbowl tournament, but that you still might expect someone, somewhere to answer." Don't go too far in either the standard-ACF-Nationals canon or in the "let's just write on things that I know the best players in quizbowl can't get to prove I can do it" directions.

SCIENCE:
A question related to animals
A question on "engineering," however defined
A science question
A math question

HISTORY:
A question pertaining to India or Indian culture in some way
A question on military history
A question pertaining to "the 20th century"
A question on any event, historical or fictional, that somehow involved at least one citizen of Japan being injured in some way
A question on Byzantine or medieval Slavic history
TWO history questions

LITERATURE:
A question on Asian literature
A question pertaining to a novella, short story, or poem
A literature question

ARTS:
A question on painting from the years 500 to 1250 CE
A question on academic music
TWO questions on architecture

RMP/SS:
A question on something related to Jews or Judaism
A myth question
A social science or philosophy question

TRASH:
A question on anything from trash music as quizbowl defines it
A question on sports
A question on rock music
A question on Arrested Development
TWO questions on movies occupying any point on the academic/trash spectrum
A trash question

OTHER:
A question on any area of the conventional ACF distribution whatsoever, but "loosely modeled on the Gunpei Yokoi Memorial in terms of overall aesthetics and tone"
A question on economics, science, or poetry
A question somehow involving hats
A very difficult question of Gaddis-like level
A question that could represent the concept of "varying difficulty"
A common link question
A "your choice" question

Please write and randomize a packet containing precisely 1 of each question above (or two where noted). In categories where the broad category itself occurs (e.g. "a science question" under science) that is 1 distinct question in addition to all the other, more specific question subjects listed.

Be as creative as possible and write on whatever difficulty or particular subject you want within the stated parameters. What constitutes a question "on" or "pertaining to" some thing is totally up to your interpretation within the limits of common sense, good faith, and not trying to be more clever than you are, as specified above. Questions should contain superpowers and powers, and probably be around 7 lines long on average, but do what makes sense for each category.

This tournament costs $0 to play and will be edited by no one. You may collaborate with any number of people from 0 to infinity, inclusive, on your packet, and whoever writes for your packet will of course "sit out" the round that it is read online. However, at least one person from each team is responsible for reading their packet to the chat room.

Normal online packet-reading rules will be followed with every person playing for him or herself throughout the day, with a winner named based on total tossup points at the end. To maintain fairness, anyone who does not write a packet will need to sit out a round to constitute their bye.

It might be helpful to post in this thread once you have finished your round so that we know how long this event will be, but no other form of registration is required other than being present at IRC Festivus with a completed packet.

Could someone tell me:
1. What "varying difficulty" means?
2. What was the Gunpei Yokoi Memorial like?

If he told you that, it would ruin the fun!

I can't even find the tournament announcement - does anyone at least know what unwritten set this is referring to?

Whoops, temporarily switched to Indian grammar here...

Honestly, I'm fairly certain that a lot of the writers of the first tournament had no idea either [including myself], so they just wrote something that they thought matched the feel of those words. It worked out fine. Do whatcha want.

It's referring to "This SIDE Tournament Goes Up to 11", which was supposed to have packets that gradually increased in difficulty. Not a concept that easily translates to a single question.

EDIT: Corrected, per below.

I thought this was referring to something Ryan Westbrook had in mind but never wrote.

Ah, I see, I misread Robert's post to read "This Tournament Goes to 11," and thought he was just misinterpreting the old theme tournament. I had forgotten what Ryan's hypothetical tournament was called. Thanks!

Should there be a list of people who plan on participating in this? (Kirk and I are submitting a packet and may play)

Likewise, I just saw this thread and would be interested in participating, especially if I could find a collaborator who likes writing history, science, and architecture.

I'm interested in playing this. I can write trash, art, history, or miscellania for anybody who wants to collaborate on a packet.

Matt Weiner won Evan's partial packet, I won Kirk's packet, and Will Nediger won Nick's packet. I think I won on aggregate.

Attached is our packet, which features a "fair and balanced amount of non-anime Japanese material."

In case anybody else would like to play this packet on IRC instead of downloading it and reading it (spoiler alert: it's almost all Japanese-related content, chosen to fit the distribution Matt outlined; it is also not for the faint-hearted), I'd be happy to read it if enough people are interested.
