ANNOUNCEMENT: Penn Bowl 2013 (10/19/13)

Post by Sima Guang Hater »

I am pleased to announce Penn Bowl 2013: Now with Less K-Pop, for the Fall semester of 2013. We hope to run this tournament and all of its mirrors on October 19th and 26th.

QUESTIONS

This tournament will be written entirely by a team of Patrick Liao, Saajid Moyen, and Eric Mukherjee. Eric Mukherjee will be head-editing. In keeping with the spirit of Penn-ance, we seek to use this set as a continuing example going forward of the high quality of questions and tournament logistics the Penn team is capable of producing. There will be 14 packets (not 15) of power-marked questions not longer than 8 lines (including bolding for power). The target difficulty is equivalent to Penn-ance last year.

The distribution we are using is as follows:
4/4 Literature (1/1 World and Other)
4/4 History
4/4 Science (1/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Physics, 1/1 Math and Other)
3/3 Arts
3/3 RMP
1/1 SS
1/1 Geography, CE, and Other (science history goes here)

Each packet will also have a tiebreaker tossup and an extra bonus, each from literature, history, or science.

HOSTING

We are looking for mirrors in all regions. The mirror fee will be $40 per team. All mirrors of this tournament should run on either October 19th or 26th, pending a confirmation of these dates.

At the main site, we will use the following fee structure:
Base fee: $120 per team
Working buzzer discount: $10 each
Approved moderator discount: $15 each
Travel discount: $15 (more than 200 miles one way according to Google maps)

If you have any questions, please contact Eric Mukherjee at infinitestryker0 at gmail dot com.

METHOD OF PAYMENT (borrowed from Cody Voight)

All teams must pay by the day of the tournament. We prefer to accept payment in person right before the tournament starts, but we will accept checks by mail ahead of time if your procedures require it. Teams who do not pay by the day of the tournament will be charged a $25 penalty and will have two weeks to pay their total amount before we start mailing letters to your school administration about it.

We can accept cash, personal checks, or checks from school, school district, or quizbowl club funds. We have no ability to process purchase orders, credit cards, Paypal, or any other forms of payment. Bringing forms of payment outside of the three listed will be considered nonpayment and subject you to the $25 late payment penalty.

All checks must be made out to either "Saajid Moyen" or "Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania". If you bring a check not made out to either "Saajid Moyen" xor "Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania" and have no other method of paying for the tournament, you will be subject to the $25 late payment penalty. If you require a pre-tournament invoice in order to have a check cut, let us know early enough for your school to process the payment. We can generally send you an invoice the same day.

MIRRORS

We either have or are looking for mirrors in the following locations

As per the last few times I've edited a fall regular-difficulty set, we will also make this set available for NASAT tryouts at no cost. No one on the Penn team will be policing the distribution of this set over the Internet after all mirrors are complete, so please announce your tryouts ASAP in the fall so your prospects know not to look at the set.

NASAT coordinators, keep in mind that this set will be publicly available shortly after the last mirror is completed. It will NOT be protected as long as Penn-ance was last year.

Given the large number of registrations and our ability to field house teams to fill out brackets, we will actually keep registration completely open for at least another week.

Hey everyone, as usual, we could use as many moderators as possible for Penn Bowl, given the ever expanding field. You will receive free lunch and our eternal gratitude, as usual.

We are now at 19 to 22 teams. I encourage everyone who wants to register to do so before Sunday night, at which point we will evaluate possible formats and place a hard cap on the field.

We just saw this thread. Wish we had seen it sooner. Nevertheless, if you end up needing an extra team to fill out your field, Saint Joseph High School of Metuchen, NJ is interested.

If we get a couple more teams signed up then we may be able to expand to a 30 team field. For now, though, the field is closed at 24 (at least until Maryland and NYU confirm their team numbers).

As it turns out, Saint Joe's of Metuchen needs to withdraw its interest---we cannot secure a bus for the 19th. Sorry about this. Nevertheless, good luck with your tournament.

If any teams end up getting shut out of this tournament due to the field cap, you're welcome to attend our online mirror of it the next day. You'll have a better experience playing it in person, but if that's not an option, we'd love to have you play our iteration of it. Announcement is at: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15020

From the email just sent out to team contacts:

Logistics:

Plan to arrive at Meyerson Hall Room B1 between 8:15 and 8:45am. We will move to Williams Hall and begin games at 9:00am. Our schedule will have no byes, so it is imperative that you get here on time so that you can hear all of your round 1 questions.

You can park at any of the locations listed at http://cms.business-services.upenn.edu/ ... ndors.html. I recommend the first two options ($10 and $11) as they are cheap and close to Meyerson and Williams. There is food just about everywhere around campus, and I will be happy to help you find something if you have special dietary needs.

With 24 teams the tournament format will be as follows: There will be 4 preliminary brackets of 6. The top two teams from each preliminary bracket will advance to the top playoff bracket of 8, while the 3rd/4th and 5th/6th teams will advance to consolation playoff brackets. After lunch, teams will play the 6 teams in their playoff bracket that they have not already played (one of your preliminary games will count toward your playoff ranking). We will use an ACF style final if necessary at the end of the playoffs. We will have book prizes for the top two overall teams at the end of the tournament.

Stats for all games: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... all_games/

Play-off only stats will be up either later tonight or tomorrow. Feel free to PM me with stat corrections.

UVA convincingly cleared the field. Columbia A came second with two losses. Maryland B and LASA A each ended up with three losses. The individual scoring leaders from the preliminaries were: Matt Bollinger, Aaron Cohen, Jordan Brownstein, Dallas Simons, and Cody Voight.

There should be a private forum set up to discuss this set by the end of the night. Any feedback on how it can be improved for future tournaments would be greatly appreciated.

I would also like to apologize to Wilmington Charter A, High Tech, Delaware A, and Maryland C, and other teams in the middle bracket for the delays they experienced at this tournament. Our house team went to the wrong room for one playoff round and that ended up putting another room a full round behind the others. This will not happen at future Penn tournaments.

Also, we have Wilmington Charter's two buzzer sets, so we should get in contact to return them ASAP.

Thanks to everyone for coming!

I've gotten an email about misspelt names in the stats (they were all done based on what I think was written on the rosters). If I messed up your name in the stats (or your actual stats in the stats), feel free to PM or email me and I'll fix them tonight.
