West Virginia Quiz Bowl Kickoff (09/28/13)

This is my first post on this site, so please bear in mind that I am posting this on behalf of the TD, who is a family member, and whose name and email I have permission to attach at the bottom of this entry. I also apologize for not posting the information for this tournament on this site further in advance, but certainly better late than never.

The University of Charleston, in Charleston, WV, will be hosting the first annual West Virginia Quiz Bowl Kickoff Tournament on September 28, 2013. This tournament guarantees both morning and afternoon rounds for all who attend, and the field will hold up to thirty teams. The packet being used will be IS-129A. The format being used will be the traditional WV format, which is elaborated upon on at tournament's website provided later. If it is requested though I can describe the format in greater detail on here. The fee for registering is $50 for each team, with a $5 discount for bringing a ten-player lock-out buzzer system and a $5 discount for bringing a volunteer. The closing date for registration is September 20, 2013, so please register before this date as teams may or may not be accepted into the field after September 20, regardless of field size. Registration for the tournament is online at ucwv.edu/quizbowl and any extra information desired should be easily found at that link. The current field will be updated on here in the subsequent post.

We would love to establish this tournament as a staple tournament in the region for years to come, and we are obviously hoping to have a great first annual tournament, so we welcome any team from around the nation interested in competing and learning about West Virginia quiz bowl. We believe that this tournament fills a vacancy for solid early season tournaments in our state and hope that it will result in bringing competitive teams from the Mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes regions into the state of West Virginia on a regular basis. Lastly, it is worth mentioning that while this tournament is not explicitly linked to George Washington's team, it is our team's goal for the year to expand the reach and quality of West Virginia Quiz Bowl, and we believe that a strong early season tournament with impressive competition from both in-state and out-of state teams will go far toward achieving this goal.

Very sorry for the statistics delay, but the full stats should be finished and posted by this weekend. There were a few issues slowing down the process, but the full team stats and individual stats should be up by the end of this Saturday. What happened to South Charleston? I thought their good player(s) from last year were returning, but that could have been wrong.

Matt M., who posted 79 ppg for South Charleston at last year's University High tournament, didn't play at the September kickoff. No idea if that was a result of graduation or just a simple schedule conflict.

Matt graduated from South Charleston last spring. As did, I believe, all other members of South Charleston's A-team from 2012-2013.

What happened to South Charleston? I thought their good player(s) from last year were returning, but that could have been wrong.

Matt Massie, who was basically their whole team, graduated. Good player, he's at Yale now but I don't think he plans on doing college quiz bowl.

While we're on the topic, I thought Bridgeport was supposed to be doing relatively well this year.

Bridgeport was beaten solidly by Northmont, GW, Tipp and Dunbar A twice, which really depressed their PPG.
