New England (CT, MA, VT, NH) Date Claims, 2013-14

Post by Adventure Temple Trail »

Hi folks! For this school year, I'll be updating a calendar of tournament dates within, or of interest to, the New England area. This calendar should remain suitably updated enough to be emailed or linked to for the benefit of teams and coaches that don't otherwise follow the forums. I'll try to update this with events in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire [plus, hypothetically, Rhode Island and Maine] as they get announced; if I miss yours or you want to sound out whether a certain date or time range works for a given event, post below. (Wresting Connecticut, and the formatting of the calendar, from Jon Pinyan's expansionist ambitions.)

Post also in this thread if you have tentative plans to host an event but aren't sure yet where it will go; this will help us avoid scheduling pileups or conflicts. Thanks!

All dates listed are Saturdays unless stated otherwise.

Harvard, MIT, and Williams are tentatively (and likely) looking at HSAPQ events on March 8 (two regional events) and April 5 (one statewide event).

According to Hanover's Bill Murphy, the New Hampshire Quiz Bowl League regional dates are:
September 28 - Seacoast - Portsmouth Christian
November 16 - Merrimack Valley - Merrimack
January 11 - North Country - Lisbon
February 1 - Lakes Region - Laconia
March 15 - West - John Stark
While these events are the qualifiers for NHQBL states, last I knew they are also open to teams from outside the state. They play speedchecks, however. The NHQBL finals are April 6.

As for Vermont, we've yet to finalize dates, though if things stick as usual our dates will be:

Sept. 28: Sue Pasco Opening Tournament at Essex HS (Using an NAQT A set from 2012-13)
Friday, Dec. 6: Pre-Holiday Academic Tournament at South Burlington HS (Using an NAQT A set)
Jan. 25 or Feb. 1: Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl first-round playoffs at Montpelier HS
April 5: Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl state finals at Champlain College

We'll also likely have a Vermont NAQT Championship at Spaulding HS on a Friday in March and seven Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl regional tournaments around the state between late October and early December. They're usually after school on weekdays.

This isn't set in stone yet, but MIT Fall will likely be using the JAMES set written last year by the Thomas Jefferson and LASA teams.

AMSA will definitely host a tournament this year, most likely using an NAQT set. We're thinking January. (Do we ever do snow dates on Sunday?) Is there a good thread to read for "hosting your first tournament?"

The best, most up-to-date guide I've seen on TDing is this one from the SoCal Quizbowl website, by this year's Cooper Award co-winner Chris Chiego. I'd also be glad to help answer specific questions via email.

NHBB would like to reserve the dates of 12/7, 1/25, and 3/15 for our 3 Boston area tournaments. Host sites and confirmations of those dates to follow shortly. Aside from that, we'll look to again have a VT, NH, and CT tournament, with a Maine tournament and a second CT tournament as possibilities. All tournament dates will be updated here as soon as we have them. The NH tournament is almost certain to be at Hanover on 11/23. The VT tournament will be sometime in early 2014.

Any idea when MIT Fall will be? Being able to potentially play the JAMES Set in the Northeast sounds intriguing. Hopefully MIT can find a date that is currently open in the entire Northeast, allowing as many Northeast teams to come as possible! But of course MIT must do what is best in its judgment.

Edit: Looking at both the NY/NJ and NE calendars for 2013-2014, finding such a date will not be easy. October 5 jumps out, but since that is the first SAT day in the Fall, this may or may not be problematic. So I hope we and many other Northeast teams can come, but if conflicts prevent this for my team, we nevertheless wish MIT good luck with its tournament

In Vermont, it's looking like the dates for our fall tournaments will be:
*Sept. 28 -- Sue Pasco Opening Tournaemnt at Essex HS (NAQT IS-125A)
*Dec. 6 -- Pre-Holiday Academic Tournament at South Burlington HS (NAQT IS-127A)

I'll put out formal announcements soon.

AMSA is hosting a tournament on November 23 in Marlborough, MA. I'll post registration information in a day or two, but I wanted to get the date out there. We'll be using IS-133A packet set.

The program MIT SPLASH is also running the weekend of November 23rd. It's a very popular program for more academically-oriented high school students in the Greater Boston area, which with the QB community is closely correlated with. Nearly thousands of motivated high schoolers attend the program, which is held annually on MIT's campus. Due to that, I think the players on many teams in eastern Massachusetts wouldn't be able to attend the wonderful tournament you have planned at AMSA on the 23rd.

Any chance the tournament could be moved to a different weekend for that reason? I know, like many other Greater Boston teams as well, that all the members on my team plan on attending SPLASH this year. Of course, if it is an inconvenience, it is perfectly understood. Thanks for all the hard work you've put into contributing to the growth of QB in New England!

I imagine that an NAQT Regional Championship like last year's setup at Harvard could be hosted in CT this year (thereby drawing >1 Connecticut teams) if there's an interested host; I wouldn't be averse to such a thing existing, or to a CT-specific thing sprouting up, but I personally don't have the ability to organize either this year.

Updated the calendar above.

Hello,

I would like to informally announce that Williams plans on hosting a tournament on January 11th which will probably be a mirror of whatever we determine to be the best set that will be available and not used by any school that is too nearby (we are considering GSAC, but have yet to come to any decisions) - a formal announcement will likely come within the next couple of days, but the date is just about certain.

We are going to stay with the November 23 date for the Central Mass tournament, with apologies to those students who will be at SPLASH. Also, the set is 129-A (not the 133A we originally posted.) Registrations are starting to come in, so reserve your spots soon.

Hello--
I have put out feelers for a CT NAQT state championship, and Woodland is interested in hosting (this isn't locked in stone yet, though). MA is holding a HSAPQ championship (see above), but I don't know what might be happening with a MA NAQT championship. Looks like things are in flux here--is anyone interested in doing a New England Regional this year, or should somebody volunteer to do a MA NAQT championship?

Since many teams in our circuit participate in the WGBH Quiz Show, whose tapings are on January 25th and February 1st, is there a way that MA History Bowl Championships and BHSAT could possibly be moved?

The short answer for BHSAT is "no." The longer answer is that many factors, including room reservations made months in advance, other tournaments scheduled almost a year in advance, and the already-cluttered nature of the calendars for NY/NJ and New England alike all converged to fit us into a date that we had to determine last June, and we really can't change our plans this late in the game for anything short of an actual emergency such as a snowstorm.

The History Bowl answer is a (Edit 12/18) yes. Switched to Feb. 8.

I have been told that 2/22 is a bad date for CT INV V because everyone in Massachusetts will be on vacation. I am seriously thinking about switching the date to 3/1 but I need input on this soon. Is there any reason anyone can think of that we can't do this on 3/1? Thanks.

CT debate is hosting three debates at various locations in CT on that day, but that may only affect our team.

March 1st is the same day as Science Bowl, which is an extremely popular event attracting at least 24 schools in the area.

Hello—

After a bit of soul searching and a lot of data gathering (thank you to those who chimed in), I have decided to stay with the original date of 2/22/14 for CT INV V. I know this is somewhat disappointing for MA teams, but the thing that tipped the balance is the timing of UConn Science Bowl. It is on March 1st, and most of my players would be unavailable to staff our event. In short, having CT INV on March 1st would mean an understaffed, choppy tournament.

I would still strongly encourage MA teams/schools to send as many teams as you can comfortably pull together. That having been said, would everyone receiving this message please let me know if it causes them to change their plans? I believe there are some who said “Yes we are coming” based on a March 1st date. Let me reiterate:

CT INV V will be held on February 22nd, 2014.

But, please, everyone who can come, we’d love to have you! Should be a lot of fun!

Edit 12/18 - Just to fill in some gaps on the schedule:

Feb. 8 - Maine History Bee and Bowl at Greely HS in Cumberland Center on C Set AND Massachusetts History Bee and Bowl at Everett HS on B Set
Feb. 15 - Vermont History Bee and Bowl on B Set at Burlington HS

As always, all events are open to out of state teams. Email me if you have any questions. Thanks!

The Massachusetts History Bee and Bowl at Everett has been switched to Saturday, Feb. 8, after a number of schools requested a date change due to the date conflict with the high school quiz show. It's still on B set, and the only area date conflict seems to be the CT History Bee and Bowl, also on B Set that day, so hopefully this will go over well.

The Connecticut History Bee and Bowl (NHBB B Set) will be held on Saturday, March 15 at Newtown High School - not on Saturday, February 8 as was originally announced. I apologize for any confusion and inconvenience to teams who had been planning on it for this weekend.

There will not be; instead, MIT will host the state tournament for the Massachusetts Quizbowl Championship. MITBAT will hopefully return next year if we can secure a good date for it.
