Golden Eagle Bowl II - Sept 28, 2013 - Raleigh, NC

Post by msmathwhiz »

Enloe Magnet High School would like to invite you to the second annual Golden Eagle Bowl on September 28, 2013. Enloe is located just east of downtown Raleigh, conveniently less than 2 miles east of the I-440 Beltline.

This year the tournament will be a mirror for the Brookwood Invitational Scholars Bowl, written by Adam Silverman, Mostafa Bhuiyan, Brady Weiler, and Kunal Naik. Knowing these veteran Quiz Bowlers, you will see some interesting material and some of Adam's bad jokes. The structure of the question sets is:

4/4 Literature (1/1 American, 1/1 European, 1/1 British, and 1/1 World/Miscellaneous/more of the other three)
4/4 History (1/1 American, 1/1 European, 1/1 World, 1/1 More of the other three)
4/4 Science (1/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Physics, 1/1 Other Science, including Non-computational Math, Computer Science, Earth Science, Astronomy, and History of Science)
3/3 Arts (1/1 Painting, 1/1 Compositional Music, 1/1 Other Arts, including Jazz, Opera, Art Film, Musical Theater, Sculpture, Photography, and Architecture)
1/1 Mythology
1/1 Religion and Philosophy (with a focus on Abrahamic religion)
1/1 Geography (with a focus on cultural clues)
1/1 Current Events (this will also include events from the last ten to fifteen years, not just last year)
1/1 Social Science and Mixture--This category will include a few cross-category common links as well as normal social sciences such as anthropology, psychology, and economics. We are also stressing civics, as we believe political science is an under-asked but very convertable and important topic that people learn in high school.

+ Tiebreakers from either Literature, History, or Science
There will be no power marks. We will play 9 rounds and save a 10th round in the event we need a playoff for the championship. All rounds will be 20 questions with 20 bonus sets. First round begins at 9:00 AM, registration runs from 8:15 to 8:40 AM. Initial meeting of teams will begin at 8:45 AM. We will initially cap registration at 24 teams, but may expand to 28 teams if we have sufficient staff.

Registration cost is $65 for the first team from a school, $60 for each subsequent team, and a school is limited to 4 teams in the inital registration. There is a $10 discount on registration for any working buzzer system provided and a $10 discount for a volunteer staffer if utilized. Payment is due the day of the tournament, but checks can be mailed in advance to: Celia Rowland, Enloe Magnet High School, 128 Clarendon Crescent, Raleigh, NC 27616.

Registration can be completed at this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12_KYK2 ... 4/viewform

We look forward to seeing new and returning teams to our season kick-off!

Preliminary statistics for the morning rounds are posted here:

Final statistics for all games are posted here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... standings/

Congratulations to Raleigh Charter A for winning the tournament and going undefeated for the day! Second place went to Greensboro A, third place to NCSSM B and fourth place to Millbrook A. All four teams qualified for the PACE Nationals in Washington, D. C. in June 2014.

Thank you to all teams who came yesterday and worked with us in training some newbies to the Enloe team. And a huge thank you to Rishi who was my data manager for the day. Please let me know if there are any inconsistencies or typos in names and I can fix them.

Congratulations to Raleigh Charter for winning the Golden Eagle Bowl! Remember that there are future mirrors of BISB, so please don't discuss specific questions in the public part of this forum. We would, however, love any feedback on the set, so a private discussion forum has been set up. To access it, you can go to User Control Panel - Usergroups - BISB 2013 Discussion. Thanks!

Again, congratulations to all the teams in attendance, and we hope everyone enjoyed BISB!
