Triacontakaipentagon: Side Tournament Redemption (8/4/13)
Barring anything else stepping up to the plate, I am announcing a totally guerilla (that is, 100% unedited, free of charge, and whatever "casual" may mean) tournament to be held on Sunday 8/4, the day after VCU Open, from noon until whenever we run out of packets.
This tournament will require you to write a 35-tossup, no-bonus packet, containing 1 question representing the subject matter of each of the 35 side tournaments that have been announced but never written or played over the last five years.
Distribution
Category groupings are provided solely for your convenience and are not meant to bind you to any one interpretation of what these side tournaments might have contained. E.g., your question on India can be on Indian music or an Indian scientist, it doesn't have to be on Indian history as quizbowl would normally define it, and so forth for other categories listed.
SCIENCE:
A question related to animals
A question on "engineering," however defined
A science question
A math question
HISTORY:
A question pertaining to India or Indian culture in some way
A question on military history
A question pertaining to "the 20th century"
A question on any event, historical or fictional, that somehow involved at least one citizen of Japan being injured in some way
A question on Byzantine or medieval Slavic history
TWO history questions
LITERATURE:
A question on Asian literature
A question pertaining to a novella, short story, or poem
A literature question
ARTS:
A question on painting from the years 500 to 1300 CE
A question on academic music
TWO questions on architecture
RMP/SS:
A question on something related to Jews or Judaism
A myth question
A social science or philosophy question
TRASH:
A question on anything from trash music as quizbowl defines it
A question on sports
A question on rock music
A question on Arrested Development
TWO questions on movies occupying any point on the academic/trash spectrum
A trash question
OTHER:
A question on any area of the conventional ACF distribution whatsoever, but "loosely modeled on the Gunpei Yokoi Memorial in terms of overall aesthetics and tone"
A question on economics, science, or poetry
A question somehow involving hats
A very difficult question of Gaddis-like level
A question that could represent the concept of "varying difficulty"
A common link question
A "your choice" question
--
Edit: To try to keep this from spiraling into an unmanageable length, I've cut the two questions representing tournaments that were in fact written/played but never archived; if you still really want to write questions on "thought" or board/card games, you can certainly do so under the entries for "any ACF", "any trash," etc. as appropriate.
Please write and randomize a packet containing precisely 1 of each question above (or two where noted). In categories where the broad category itself occurs (e.g. "a science question" under science) that is 1 distinct question in addition to all the other, more specific question subjects listed.
Be as creative as possible and write on whatever difficulty or particular subject you want within the stated parameters. What constitutes a question "on" or "pertaining to" some thing is totally up to your interpretation. Questions should contain superpowers and powers, and probably be around 7 lines long on average, but do what makes sense for each category.
Before each game, you will manually delete/cross out any obvious repeats in your packet and the moderator will announce how many total questions remain for use in that round. Whatever we end up with is what's played. There will be no tiebreakers, no protests, and no complaints about difficulty or quality. If this tournament runs at the mirror sites and there are packets by non-participants available, then there will be a final; otherwise, it will be a simple round-robin with the champion determined solely by record/PPG.
This tournament costs $0 to play and will be edited by no one. Other than answering any unforseen questions about it in this thread, I will be devoting no further time to this event until VCU Open is complete. You will show up with your packet on a flash drive or with sufficient paper copies of it, and that will be the only requirement to play.
Teams should be composed of either 3 or 4 people, with smaller teams discouraged, so that everyone can read on their bye. You can register by e-mailing me at [email protected] and use the VCU Open spreadsheet to form teams.

This is an amusing idea. I hope it gets mirrored.

To be fair, a fair number of rock music question are getting folded into Seth Teitler Presents. The 2 week period before that announcement was the most bizarre question-writing binge I've ever gone on. 10 in s day and like 40 in a week all to suddenly cease. Sound and Fury signifying something? I don't know. Also, I'd be mildly interested in playing.

I can't make it to VCU open but I'd love to co-write a packet. Send me a message if you're playing this and know about Arrested Development.
EDIT: Shan and I are now writing a packet.

We might mirror this in Seattle. I'm willing to write half a packet for this, particularly with someone who wants to write some science questions. Let me know if you're interested.

Is this set available for mirrors? I'd also be willing to write some questions for some people, particularly in science or fine arts.

Yeah, I'd like to get more mirrors lined up, provided everyone gets their packets in by 8/4.

I'm having trouble finding a ride to Richmond. Given that this a wacky side event, how do the TDs feel about people playing it via Skype or Google Hangout?

Looks like I'm just going to have a packet written myself.Mike Bentley wrote:We might mirror this in Seattle. I'm willing to write half a packet for this, particularly with someone who wants to write some science questions. Let me know if you're interested.
I suppose I might also be interested in a Skype version of this, although it seems like it might be more effort than it's worth.

Re: Triacontakaipentagon: Side Tournament Redemption (8/4/13)
Since this tournament is happening across multiple sites, the bring-your-packet format doesn't make as much sense. Can someone who's not playing volunteer to compile all the packets and then send them out to the sites on Sunday? You wouldn't have to edit them or anything, just make sure they're named, put them in a folder, and send them all out.
The Bollinger/Casalaspi/Adams packet is being written and will be done by the end of this week. Hopefully others are making similar progress.

Since we're probably running our mirror on Saturday, if the packets could be sent out on Saturday, that would be great (I realize that some people were probably planning on finishing up their packets on Saturday, but whatever).

I can do this; email me if you are mirroring and also email me if you are playing so i can send your packets along.vcuEvan wrote:Since this tournament is happening across multiple sites, the bring-your-packet format doesn't make as much sense. Just to re-emphasize, George Berry has volunteered to be the central depot for the packets so that all sites can play all the rounds that will be written. Please send him your round by Saturday afternoon to accommodate the Michigan site's plans to run it on Saturday night.
I will probably ask the moderators of each round at VCU (whether they be the packet authors or not) to make the decision to cut repeats as they see them in each packet.

Please note:
Also, don't bother e-mailing to register since the key thing is having the packet ready by Saturday; whoever does will play and whoever doesn't most likely won't.
There are too many 2-person teams on the spreadsheet right now; please start combining or getting more teammates.Matt Weiner wrote:Teams should be composed of either 3 or 4 people, with smaller teams discouraged, so that everyone can read on their bye.You can register by e-mailing me at [email protected]and use the VCU Open spreadsheet to form teams.

Future sites of this tournament might not want to use my packet unless they are bad enough dudes (it was disproportionately harder than the other packets read at the main site, and has a fair claim of being the hardest ever written in quizbowl).

I will be reading this at 6 PM PST on the irc at #tricon tonight, for those interested (including those who attended the Michigan mirror, which ran before I could finish my packet) Come if you like cruelty and don't plan on playing a future mirror of this tournament.Kenneth Widmerpool wrote:Future sites of this tournament might not want to use my packet unless they are bad enough dudes (it was disproportionately harder than the other packets read at the main site, and has a fair claim of being the hardest ever written in quizbowl).
