North Carolina 2013-2014

Post by friendswithdave »

The North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities has set its calendar for most events in 2013-2014 including quiz bowl. In addition to weekly meets and the regional and state tournament, we will also host an October tournament.

NCASA will host an October 26 tournament in 3-5 sites across North Carolina. In the Triangle / Triad area (and other areas if enough teams register) we expect the high school tournament to be divided into two divisions. The Introductory division will include newer and inexperienced quiz bowl teams and use an NAQT Introductory set. The Invitational division will include more experienced (and successful) quiz bowl teams and use an NAQT Invitational set. This Invitational division will be an NAQT qualifier for Nationals. We will also allow schools to bring multiple teams to this tournament.

The weekly quiz bowl meets will kick-off February 1 and run five more weeks after this date. Remaining dates will be after school on a day chosen by league coaches. In addition to the leagues in the Northeast, Charlotte / Hickory, and Triad areas, we expect to add a league in the Triangle area. These meets will use NAQT Introductory questions.

Cumberland County Schools will host an in-house league for all middle schools with monthly meets beginning in October.

The Regional Tournaments will be March 15 with five host sites expected: Charlotte, Triad, Triangle, Cumberland County, and Northeast. These tournaments will be qualifiers for the State Final and qualifiers for NAQT Nationals. We expect most Regionals will also host a high school JV tournament. The State Final will be March 29 and likely be held in Durham. It will use an NAQT Invitational set.

All tournaments and meets are free and open to all NCASA member middle and high schools. The membership fee remains unchanged from 2012-2013: $150 per school plus $0.25 per enrolled student. LEA's that register all schools receive a 50% discount on the total membership fee for all middle and high schools. This 50% discount also applies to charter and independent schools that include grades 6-12 and register the middle school and high school.

NCASA member schools may also participate in Twelve (Nov 23, Dec 14), The Quill, Art Showcase, and Show Choir for no additional fee.

Would you be willing to list the Dorman SC (Jan 18, 2014) Cavalier Challenge on your schedule? We have been fortunate to have many Tar Heel State teams at our event in the past, and we would love to see that number grow going forward. We are a VERY short trip for teams in WNC and the Western Piedmont, and the drive from the Triangle is not even close to prohibitive.

Additional information may be found at viewtopic.php?f=1&t=14609. Please direct any questions to me via private message on this site or email at [email protected]. If you would like to register, please contact me through one of those two means with the specifics or to request a transmission of formal registration forms. For the purposes of insuring all communications are received, please limit your contact to private messages or emails, not posts on this thread.

NHBB is looking at 12/7 or 12/14 as possible dates for a tournament in the Raleigh area, and either one of those dates or a January date (likely 1/25) for a Charlotte area tournament. We've reached out to a few schools where we have contacts, but are 99% certain we'll have two NC tournaments this year. I'll post in this thread once we have the dates and sites locked in.

This is to announce the Bonfire of the Manatees on 11/9/2013

Raleigh Charter High is pleased to announce that we will host the 6th annual Bonfire of the Manatees on Saturday, November 9, 2013. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 8:30 to 5:00 p.m., though we may well finish earlier. The tournament is open to any high school team(s) that wish to attend.

Affiliation: The tournament will use Ladue High School’s LIST set.

Format: The competition will be nine rounds; every team is guaranteed at least 6 rounds. We’ll decide on the exact playoff format once we see how many teams are signed up. All rounds will be played according to NAQT procedures, with 20 pyramid-style tossups and corresponding bonuses. We will play powers and negs, but there will be no bouncebacks on bonuses. As in years’ past, games will be Swiss-paired throughout the day using our automated scoring program. Trophies will be awarded to the two top teams and book prizes for the top ten individual scorers.

Registration: To register, please e-mail Betsy Newmark at betsynewmark AT gmail DOT com with the number of teams and buzzers you wish to bring, and an e-mail address where we may reliably contact you. Soon after, you should receive a confirmation email along with a packet of information regarding the tournament.

Fees: The fee per team will be $65, with a $10 discount for each fully functional buzzer system that has a control box and eight buzzers. Payment may be mailed either prior to November 9, or paid in person on the day of the tournament. Please make all checks out to Raleigh Charter High School.

Teams: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time, with no exceptions. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a half-time substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day—no switching between the A and B teams, for example. Teams may also play shorthanded with fewer players.

Food: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. Further information regarding local food options will be provided along with the confirmation email sent to you after registration.

We hope to see your team at the Bonfire at the Manatees!

NHBB's inaugural Greater Charlotte History Bee and Bowl will be held at Cannon School on Saturday, March 8. This tournament will run on B Set. Full details here: http://www.historybowl.com/regionalsite ... charlotte/ We hope to have lots of NC and SC schools join us! The SC tournament will run on C set, so no overlap there. Hello all. I'm Bob Powers from Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, VA. I thought I'd toss our hat into this thread as well since there are some schools in a reasonable driving distance from our little school that might wish to attend our tournaments. We are holding two high school tournaments this school year. Our CSI VIII is on November 16th and our NCIS is on February 15th. Those of you who were planning on doing the Wake Forest tournament on the 16th now have the option of heading up our way, if you so wish. It's a good time had by all and we will be running the IMSANITY housewrite. I know on February 15th, UNC is hosting a tournament but should plans change, feel free to think about us as a backup.

Registration is now open for the NCASA weekly quiz bowl meets. These meets are free and open to all NCASA member schools. If enough schools are interested, JV level meets may be held concurrent with the varsity meets. This would enable more students in grades 6-7 and 9-10 to participate. Visit our website to register or contact me if you have questions. www.ncscholastic.org

- These meets will kick-off with the Quiz Bowl Jamboree on the morning of February 1. Jamboree sites to be determined (NCSSM and Southeast Guilford have confirmed as hosts)
- The Quiz Bowl Jamboree will begin with an orientation session for new schools and will follow with three matches for each school.
- Subsequent weekly meets will occur after school on a weekday and time chosen by the participating coaches. These will begin the week of Feb 3.
- Each after-school meet will consist of three matches with other area schools. Participating schools will host these meets.
- There is no cost to participate in these meets.
- Each school must bring a volunteer to the meets who can read or keep score.
- A buzzer system is helpful but not required to participate.
- Standings will be kept to help determine seeding for the Regional Tournament. These meets will also be a qualifier for NAQT Nationals.
- These meets are NOT a qualifier for the Regional Quiz Bowl Tournaments. The March 15 Regional Tournaments are open to all NCASA Member schools including those who do not participate in the weekly meets.
- Registration closes on January 15.
- We expect conferences to form in the following areas: South Charlotte, Foothills (Iredell / Catawba County, etc), Triad, Triangle, Northeast, Sandhills.
- Coaches meetings will occur the evening of January 16.
- Schools may withdraw from the meets through January 17 without penalty. This is meant to encourage schools interested in participating but unsure if there are enough schools in their area to form a Quiz Bowl League.

The Research Triangle History Bee and Bowl will be at East Chapel Hill HS on (Edit 12/27) February 8 on A Set. Sign up at http://www.historybowl.com/registration Our Greater Charlotte History Bee and Bowl will still be on 3/8 at Cannon School in Concord on C Set, so this gives NC and other area teams chances to play two sets in NC. Sorry about the date switch, but I don't think this should run into any conflicts as far as I know. Thanks!

Late notice, but we're still hoping for a field. The 2014 Celebrity Shoot will be held at Wake Tech's north campus on January 18.

Fee structure:

$55 for the first team of four players, plus $5 per each additional player. There is no limit to teams or players and adults may participate as well (though they compete in a separate category).

All proceeds go to support NCATA.

Contact Eric Grunden ([email protected]) to register or for more information, including sample sets from previous years.

The Research Triangle History Bee and Bowl at East Chapel Hill HS on A Set is now on February 8, not 3/8 as originally reported. Sorry about the mixup, but this will still hopefully work out for interested teams.

We’d like to invite you to Raleigh Charter High School for the 10th Annual Right Triangle Open on Saturday, February 22, 2014. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 8:30 AM to approximately 5:00 PM, though we may finish earlier. The tournament is open to any high school team that wishes to attend.

Payment may be mailed either prior to February 15, or paid in person on the day of the tournament.

We hope to see your team at the RTO!

CAST will be moving from February 15th to March 22nd to avoid conflict with home basketball games. We will now be using the NAQT Division II Sectionals set instead of BHSAT. A full announcement should be up shortly.

Hi everyone,

The University of Kentucky is hosting a Pre-Nationals weekend on May 10 and 11th on our campus in Lexington, Kentucky. On Saturday, we'll be using NAQT SCT DII with HSNCT rules, and on Sunday we'll be using the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament with NSC rules.

Please note that our Saturday set is also being used at UNC, so I'd encourage you attend their event. But if you'd like to come for our Sunday event only, we obviously would enjoy that.

For more details on fees and such, check our announcement at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... =1&t=15460.

Due to some last-minute emergencies, Millbrook is short a few moderators for our tournament this Saturday, April 26th. We need 1-2 moderators who would be able to read for 5 rounds in the morning, from about 8 AM to 12:30 PM. You would be compensated in gratitude and gift cards (and for students, volunteer hours as well). We would really, really appreciate if you would be able to help us out; if you are willing/interested, please either call and leave a message at (919)-523-0815 or send an email to [email protected] . Thank you!!
