Can I see that common-link lit question on "cook" from IS-118? I vaguely remember buzzing in early and saying "maid" and some arguments over whether or not that should have been acceptable.

Can I see that tossup on "geometric constructions"? It was in the pyramidal part of the MSHSAA state questions, so I think it was from an IS-set.

My memory may be a bit hazy as it's been more than 4 years since I read it, but I definitely remember Calpurnia from To Kill a Mockingbird being explicitly described as more of a maid or housekeeper than a cook.

And I also sort-of recall Mrs. Rogers from And Then There Were None also being described as doing housekeeper with Mr. Rogers. I buzzed at the Downton Abbey clue (oops, forgot the trash stuff in there), so at that point "maid" would have been wrong, but I feel like the first clue was a little misleading and vague.

Answers like "three great problems of antiquity" should have been prompted, if not downright accepted, up to like 17-gon or so? I don't know what that Klein thing refers to, but it looks like Wantzel worked on doubling the cube and angle trisection, and pi being transcendental is presumably referring to squaring the circle.

Regarding Fred's Simon & Garfunkel tossup in IS-122: I'm pretty sure every single person on my team got hosed on the "I'm just a poor boy" clue. It sounded a lot like the "I'm just a poor boy I have no family" line from Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen; while the second part of the line from Simon & Garfunkle was different, I think a lot of people probably just buzzed the moment they heard "poor boy". While I don't know if it's appropriate in this instance, I would have really appreciated a clarifying part like "They're not Queen, but...". I still remember this question from back in March, and I just wanted to put my thoughts out there, once and for all.

One character in this film is told he can't go heliskiing. Cillian [KILL-yun] Murphy plays a judge in this film, and John Blake is told his real first name is "nice." The film ends with the revelation that the (*) autopilot was repaired, surprising Lucius Fox, and then an encounter in Italy with Alfred. For 10 points--name this last film in Christopher Nolan's trilogy starring Christian Bale as Batman.
This song's video features its performer falling off the hood of a car while watching someone work on another car's engine. This song features synthesized strings and the lines "I took no time with the (*) fall, you gave me nothing at all." Its singer makes the title request even though she "just met you and this is crazy." For 10 points--name this song in which Carly Rae Jepsen prefaces the title lyric with "here's my number."
This band used the name {Tom & Jerry} early in their career. This band uses the opening lyric "I am just a poor boy, though my story's seldom told," for their song "The Boxer." One song by this band, which reunited for ~The Concert in Central Park~, proclaims that like the title object, "I will lay me down." Their (*) "Mrs. Robinson" was featured in ~The Graduate~. For 10 points--name this 1960s duo of "Bridge Over Troubled Water."
The first clue on the S&G tossup rules out Queen.

Also true. The line was part of the introduction to the song, not the actual opening lyric. I just brought this up because it seems like the clue was kind of distracting-- as far as I know, Arcadia A, B, and C all negged on this same clue by guessing "Queen". Unfortunately, I'm not a question writer, so I don't know the standard procedure for including "It's not ____, but..." sort of disclaimers.

Queen didn't open the song with "I am just a poor boy," so it also would have been a waste of characters to put in a "They aren't Queen but...." Those go in when the clue as read actually applies to the other possible answer in question. In this case, it doesn't, so you would not put that there. You in no way were "hosed."

In general, it's probably not a bad idea to choose clues that don't have the potential to mislead despite being technically correct. That said, though, there's nothing really wrong with that question as written, and even just within that clue, the "opening lyric" phrase especially rules out Queen.

Even if it's not technically incorrect though, why even use that clue? There are many equally good S&G lyrics/songs to choose from. "I'm just a poor boy" is infinitely more recognizable as a Queen lyric, and it doesn't seem optimal to draw people into negging just because they might not have fully parsed the two words "opening lyric." Shared famous lines seem to happen with some frequency in quizbowl, and these technicalities start to get really annoying.

Thanks for posting, Jeff. I blew the Tom Stoppard tossup right at "Septimus" with Virginia Woolf (thinking the clue was referring to Mrs. Dalloway, not Stoppard's Arcadia), so I was curious to see if it was a reasonable take or not judging by whether or not the actual text said "work" in place of play.

That's a terrible plan, seeing as characters named Septimus appear in works by Stoppard, Forster, Woolf, Trollope, Wilkie Collins, Saki, and probably a few more I'm forgetting.

Could I see the "four" question from IS-122? I think the giveaway was the four horsemen.
Also, can I see the Ireland question and the Ohio question from the same set? Thanks.
