Thus far, the following teams have signed on for the UGA NAQT Juniorbird on Oct 15, 2005:

UGA (2 house teams)
South GA (1 or 2 teams)
Macon St
GA Perimeter (2 teams)
Oxford College (2 or 3 teams)*
Dalton State
North Carolina (1 or 2 teams)*
Shorter College*
Valencia CC (1 or 2 teams)
Southern Virginia Univ*

*Denotes new schools that will play at the Juniorbird for the first time.

There would be at least a single RR with some sort of playoff TBD.

There's still plenty of time to sign up. If you're interested and have been emailing the Bellsouth address given, stop. It's dead. I cant get DSL where I live. Ergo, the new email for the UGA CBAT is

[email protected]

This will be the official email for ALL UGA CBAT events, FYI.

Thanks

As of Sep 23, here is a list of the schools and teams that will be attending the UGA NAQT Juniorbird on Oct 15.

-UGA Red/Black/Silver
-NC State Wolf/Pack*
-Dalton State
-Southern Virginia*
-Vanderbilt*
-Duke
-UNC Tar/Heel*
-Valencia Black/Red
-SGA Gold/Black
-Oxford A/B*
-GPC Red/Gold
-Shorter College*
-Macon State
-Georgetown (KY)*

*= first timers to the tournament

It's obvious that some of the team designations will change, esp UNC and NC State- I just did that on the fly. If you wish to rename you teams, please let me know. Otherwise, that's what we'll use.

Format TBD, but expect either timed rounds OR untimed 20/20. Due to the number of teams, there will be balanced (to the best of my ability)divisions with attention paid to multiple school teams and school rivalries. Game format MIGHT be three divisions of 7 with a playoff system of the top eight to twelve (8-12) teams overall. Heck we try to accomodate all the teams in the playoffs if we can work the numbers.

Start time should be around 9am with round 1 at 930 or thereabouts. More on that as we get closer. We hope to be done by around 5pm or so.

Also, it's not too late to sign up. If you're interested, please let me know at [email protected]

Thanks

With a week left, I wanted to email everyone about the upcoming UGA Juniorbird tournament:

1- Teams- as it stands today, here are the schools and teams that will be coming to Athens. If the number of teams has changed in ANY way, please email me ASAP so I can make appropriate changes. They are, in no real order:

UGA (4)
South GA (2)
NC State
Dalton St
Macon St.
Duke (2)
Oxford (2)
UNC (2)
UTC
Southern VA
Valencia CC (may still be split into 2 teams- I’ll know by Friday)
GA Perimeter (2)
Wofford
Furman
Vanderbilt
Shorter Coll.

I have recieved checks from GPC and Dalton State. Please remember to make checks payable to Robin Richards.

2- Format. We will be discussing this during the week, but the tournament will be one of two types:

1. untimed 20/20 with three 8 teams divisions* and a 24 team playoff
2. timed NAQT style tournament with three 8 team divisions and a 24 team playoff

**divisions will be balanced as much as possible with attention given to A/B teams and other matters

3- Schedule- Here it is:

8am-9am: Team registration, UGA Student Learning Center (note this is NOT the Tate Center, where some teams took part in the June Hybrid- the SLC is the large building next to the Tate) Room TBA on the main door.
9am-915am- team meeting
915ish- 1st round (of 7)
Before lunch- Optional music round (if we can pull it off). If you want to do one, let me know)
Lunch sometime around noon- expect at least 1hour 15 min
Continue divisional round robin
Music round finals (while we finish stats)
Announcement of teams in brackets
Playoffs until ???? (Building closes at 7pm, but I doubt it will be that late.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

The stats seem to be omitting the final RR UNC Ninja-Vandy game, which I wouldn't particularly care about except for the fact that we beat them on the scale of about 400-250 and handed them their only loss of the tournament. Do you happen to have the stats for that handy?

Everybody on our teams agreed the tournament was excellent overall; I'll post some more detailed stuff after I get some sleep.

Keep in mind I did all this at 1230am, but you are right- it's hard for a team to go 8-0 in a 9-round RR. I guess it was a phantom win to combat that phantom touchdown UGA scored on Vandy last night (not like we needed it anyway)!

ANyways, I found the sheet this morning:

UNC Ninja beat Vanderbilt 420-205 in round 9

For UNC Brice went 2-1-0 and Sara went 2-8-2

For Vandy, Paul went 2-5-3

The resulting loss by Vanderbilt did not cause a change in the 1-20 power rankings for the playoffs.

Alright; this was arguably my favorite quiz bowl tournament I've went to in my (admittedly limited) collegiate QB experience, which I guess says a fair bit.

There were some problems we ran into that I guess are unavoidable for a tournament the size of this one. The biggest two were probably the moderators and the timing. All of the moderators were definitely eager and doing their best, but there were some problems with moderators speaking too softly, inconsistencies in giving bonus answers (after each part vs. after the entire bonus), and some other minor things. I'd like to show my appreciation again, though, for the Valencia (coach?) Boris, who moderated my team five consecutive rounds and draws a simply incomparable cassowary.

The delays in and of themselves weren't a huge deal; however, they did keep my team from catching most of the music round (and kept our last game out of the initial final stats) and led to some minor crises as we tried to finish the playoffs before they kicked us out of the SLC. Of course, if we hadn't done that we wouldn't have had that spectacular blitz-quizbowl quarterfinal match against NC State. We also had a bit of a problem finding the tournament inside the actual SLC, but if we hadn't been running late that wouldn't have been a real issue.

Aside from that, I think everyone from our teams had a great time. Having all the games (in our division, at least) in the one alcove of the building was very convenient, the attending teams were diverse in talent, and I was impressed with how smoothly it went off considering that this tournament hadn't been run in two years. We're definitely looking forward to coming back next fall.

Some other assorted notes:
1) It's nothing the host school can control at all, but having three games your team plays (two being playoff games) come down to the last two tossups is always a good way to leave a good impression for your tournament.
2) With the exception of SVU and Oxford A, it was rather odd how cleanly the delineation between the upper and lower teams seemed to be. (Not to imply anything about anybody's programs, of course; I'm sure some teams had lucky days and others were missing players, and I remember hearing something about Valencia splitting up their team for scheduling purposes the day of the tournament.)
3) Speaking of SVU, their team seemed to be composed largely of older members. If so, this means they're probably a fairly young program, in which case I'm impressed with how they performed. Their stat line was one of the odder things to come out of this tournament; I suppose they just lost a lot of close games.
4) If you include the UNCN-Vandy game in the final stats, Abhinav comes out as the #1 scorer by a hair. I don't think anyone else's individual stats were affected significantly. (Congratulations to Vanderbilt on their performance, by the way; excepting the one game, their play throughout the tournament was pretty darn dominating.)
5) How did you do tiebreakers for seeding purposes? I looked through the stats for a few minutes trying to figure it out and got nothing.

Boris Nguyen is indeed my partner as Valencia QB coach, the sober yin to my raging yang, and though he's pretty much unknown to the QB community outside Florida, he'd be up there with Seth Teitler as one of the nicest folks in the game if more people knew him. I'll pass on your kind words.

Also, so I'm on topic, my players enjoyed the tournament as well, but there was some grumbling about having the same moderator 4-5 times in a row, as mentioned by Brice.

I'll answer the two main topics from UNC and Valencia:

1-Room assignements: I used the new version of SQBS for the first time, the one that includes a schedule maker. When I made the lists and the schedules, the first room of every round had the same school in the B slot, so I did what any not-truly-understanding-the concept-of schedule-making would do: shift the rooms so that A-B-C-D-E became E-A-B-C-D, etc, etc, not knowing that this really didnt fix the matter, as shown by the fact that Valencia Red (I think) and UGA Black (for certain) were in the same room for five straight games.

To whoever designed SQBS (if they see this): is this a glitch, or do all automatic scheduling systems do this?

2-Seedings: Also again, using SQBS (and please dont read this as me trashing the system, as I, as someone who made a C in stats b/c it was the summer quarter of 1996 and UGA was also hosting the Olympic events), loves the user-friendliness of it), I chose the ranking option of W/L, Head-to-head and PPG to determine the stats. Seeing as I ranked two divsions of 10 teams 1-20 bease on their record of playing only team in their division, I saw it only right to include head-to-head match-ups to perhaps prevent the event that a team that defeated a higher ranked team somehow pole vaulted their way ahead of them if they wound up having similar records (think BCS I guess). When the stats came out (as you can see above) the 4 or 5 5-4 teams got jumbled in that order by SQBS. THat was all the stats system; I cannot explain, and Im sure some stats guy who has waaaaaaaaaaay more free time that I will explain.

And what else have I learned: When you request clocks from NAQT, just have them sent to your house, as none of the student workers at your high school have the sense to tell you there is a package waiting for you in the recieving room. If we had the clocks, time issues would have been non-existant.

As for the 2006 installment of the JB, we have it tentative scheduled for Nov 4 or Nov 11, as once again we're at the mercy of the UGA football schedule. Once we know when TRASH weekend is (the 11th?), we'll make a more concrete announcement.

As always, if anyone who went has questions or comments, please ask. I think one of the thing's a TD should is listen to the people and see if there are ways to make it better (at least for unofficial style tournaments). After all, we're providing them a service, so we should at least provide some good customer service (and yes, that's the four years of retail bookstore hell I endured saying that! :) )

Thanks
Robin
