Georgia 2013-14

Post by pajaro bobo »

Guess it's time to make this thread, seeing that there's only NSC and NASAT left to go.

Teams to watch:

Chattahoochee - Our T-50th place finish at HSNCT was, to put it simply, extremely disappointing. There are various things I could bring up to explain why we performed so poorly but there's no use doing so now. What matters is that this team will most certainly be the best team in Georgia next year. Only Jiaxiu and I leave, but what knowledge the team loses the returning players can easily cover up. Nirav and James return to beast at history, though Nirav needs to cut down his negs (and if there's any time to do it, it's next year). Julia was good enough to be on the A team and was as good as or arguably even better than me last year, so literature is covered. The only question is the science. Amith has the potential to be a great science player and already knows a good bit, and will probably be our go-to science player next year. He still has a ways to go, however, but if he can improve in that subject Hooch will graduate from being the upset specialists we were last year into a real threat. For now they'll probably be a sure pick to win the 6A state championship and will probably make up for this year with a better nationals run next year. (And maybe NSC too? Please?)

Westminster - They come off of a T-33rd finish at HSNCT, which included 6-4 prelim record and a surprise win over Hunter A in playoffs. Nilai returns but the graduation of Timothy and Tom (EDIT: Except Tom is a senior this year. Oops.) will hurt a ton. If Nilai gets that scoring replaced OR grows into a fearsome one-man team a la his MSNCT performance, then Westminster could be a part of Georgia's top tier next year. Nilai is already a very skilled player, and he'll only be a sophomore next year. Things mostly get better for them from here.

Centennial - Speaking of skilled young players, how about Centennial's own Justin Htay? I knew he was alright but I never knew that he was just a freshman this year and I definitely didn't expect him to do as well as he did at HSNCT. He led Centennial to a 6-4 prelim finish after Nikhil's apparent lack of sleep led him to be relatively ineffective throughout the day. Only Nikhil graduates, but that leaves a science/literature hole, but this team has the people to pick up the slack as well as a great future player in Justin.

Marist - You could still consider them to be a relatively new team but Mr. Mulally has done great work in making Marist a consistently strong team the past few years. They graduate their leading scorer in John but Brendan, Sebastian, and Amandha stay and, with the addition of a good fourth player to promote to A team, this team will very likely be in Georgia's top tier again. EDIT: Just learned that Maggie Schaffer, a player on Marist B who had 50+ PPG, is only a sophomore. Potential A team member? In any case, this makes Marist's future look even better.

Collins Hill and Alpharetta - Both teams went 5-5 and 4-6 respectively at HSNCT this year, but for two teams filled with underclassmen this is nothing to be disappointed about. Both return everyone, I think. Collins Hill has Zack, who becomes a junior next year, as well as a good coach in Mr. Kim. Alpharetta doesn't really have one standout player but they have diverse knowledge and plenty of dedicated members. Hopefully both teams will continue to grow and start making the top tier teams sweat.

Cedar Shoals - Evan Knox and the Heredias return next year, and if I remember correctly, it's their last year together next year. They and Mr. Richards will want to make that year count.

Brookwood - Ryan leaves, so a large bulk of their scoring is gone. But this is a young team and Ms. Payne is a new coach, so who knows? I heard that Vamsi Reddy had a good showing at ACE Camp, so that's something.

Norcross, Athens Academy, and Etowah - All three teams lose big: Norcross loses Mostafa and the rest of the A team, Athens loses Jason, and Etowah loses Duncan. All three teams were part of Georgia's top tier with Chattahoochee and Marist last year, and all three had great runs at HSNCT with Etowah beating Dorman B on their way to a T-21st finish, Norcross beating Maggie Walker in prelims and then fighting their way though the bracket to tie for 13th, and, most impressively, Athens Academy beating Northmont and TJ to end up tying for 8th. (And hopefully Norcross will make Georgia proud as the only team from this state to attend NSC.) Their futures are all uncertain, though. Mostafa says that Norcross will return Tommy and some good rising juniors next year, so we'll see about that. Athens and Etowah are bigger question marks, since I honestly don't know who comes back other than Timmy for Athens. But they've been able to generate some great talent so perhaps their futures are brighter than most might think.

South Forsyth - Sean leaves, so the one person on the team who was interested in doing anything is gone. But someone from South Forsyth posted in the GATA forums about how to study so I guess there's still some interest in quiz bowl there. Hopefully they will continue attending tournaments next year and play more often with maybe more than one or two dedicated players.

Chamblee - Kailyn graduates, I don't know who else. They pulled some nice upsets last year (Beat Hooch on an IS set and Norcross on HFT) but seldom attended tournaments (they literally played at four tournaments last year, if I remember correctly). They haven't made an appearance at a national championship tournament since the 2000 HSNCT, which was their only one, but I hope that will change because they've always been decent.

Georgia quiz bowl has tons of talent, both existing and developing, so come future HSNCTs/NSCs/NASATs this state should perform very well.

EDIT: Added some info about South Forsyth and Chamblee, seeing that they were fairly notable GA teams last year.

Just saw that Georgia has four Rising Stars, with two Sophomore and Freshman Rising Stars each. Very good news for GA teams. I've added a bit to the original post to reflect some new info I got from this.

EDIT: Also, Fred's postseason rankings has only Jason and Elyse graduating? I don't know how he got this info (I guess he just asked them) but Claudia, Edward, and Timmy were all pretty good contributors for Athens, and it will be interesting to see how they perform with their leading scorer gone.

Hoover High School would appreciate the addition to your calendar of the 9th Annual Hoover Invitational Tournament on October 12, 2013 using IS-128 (Varsity) and offering separate JV and Novice divisions (SCOP 2013 set). This tourney has continued to grow over the past five years, reaching upward of 60 teams from Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia, plus the threat of a rogue squad from Ohio this year. We would love to see more Georgia teams coming over to Birmingham for our event--the drive is about 2.5 hours, and in your case, the time change to Central is a help--you can leave at 6AM, not 5, and still make the event on time! We are located right off Interstate 20, and are pretty cool people, all things considered. See the post in the Regular Tournament Announcement section for more details, or e-mail me at jrutsky at hoover.k12.al.us for information or hotel help.

Done. 128 is also being used at the Gwinnett County event and ANGST at UNGA, so those attendees won't be able to come (not that there would have been over lap to begin with). We'll let Woodland, East Paulding, etc. know of this through our email list serv. Good luck hosting!

Congrats to Chattahoochee for winning at Ezell-Harding, beating Dunbar (EDIT: Erm, Dunbar B) and Dorman on their way to first! A good, strong start to their season.

GATA Fall results:

JV division:
1st: Chattahoochee A

It's worth noting that Dunwoody upset top playoff seed Centennial. I read for that match, it was played well by both sides and very entertaining.

Novice division:
1st: Duluth
2nd: Cedar Shoals A
3rd: Decatur
4th: Newton

The stats for this: do they reflect PPB from 3 part bonuses or 2 part bonuses? I always forget when Georgia uses what.

Edit: oh, did you include bouncebacks with base PPB again?

Georgia teams!
Vanderbilt would love to host you at our 43rd Academic Bowl Competition on February 22nd on IS-134 set.(Whoever doesn't go to Cedar Shoals, this is your chance!) Come enjoy Music City on a likely beautiful spring day! Previous ABCs have seen some, not many, Georgia participants and we hope that this one will be an exception.
Edit: You will also face some of the best teams in Tennessee, such as Ezell-Harding, the yet-unranked University School of Nashville, and Farragut, as well as Dunbar from Kentucky(that should be some incentive).
All of the details, including how to register and how to pay, are in that post.
Feel free to contact me specifically (PM or email on my profile) or us in general (vandyquizbowl AT gmail DOT com) if you have any questions.

NHBB Georgia States is now set for Prince Ave. Christian School in Bogart on Saturday, March 8 on A Set. We're also running B Set at Cedar Shoals on January 20 (MLK Day), and C Set in Southern Georgia at Southside Christian School in Waycross on Saturday, February 8. I realize it's not ideal to have 3 tournaments in the Athens area and nothing closer to Atlanta or Central Georgia - we had some trouble getting the states date down until Prince Avenue Christian offered, so I was grateful for their interest in hosting. We'll look to remedy this for 2014-15.

Hi everyone,

The University of Kentucky is hosting a Pre-Nationals weekend on May 10 and 11th on our campus in Lexington, Kentucky. On Saturday, we'll be using NAQT SCT DII with HSNCT rules, and on Sunday we'll be using the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament with NSC rules.

I've heard that there is a GATA meeting this weekend. If you're not involved with that, we'd love you to be able to attend our tournament.

For more details on fees and such, check our announcement at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... =1&t=15460.

The date of the GATA Board meeting isn't set yet as it's also the same day as the MSNCT in Atlanta. Also, getting teams to go during AP week might be a little tough, but we will place your event on our calendar.

This is, indeed, the same weekend as the GATA Board Meeting.
