2013 NSC Field Expansion

Post by Blackboard Monitor Vimes »

Effective immediately, the 2013 NSC field has expanded to 72 teams. Several waitlisted teams have confirmed their entrance into the field. As of this writing, 3 spots remain and the 2 waitlisted teams we have yet to hear from (Norcross and Harmony Science) have first right of refusal. Registration is limited to those waitlisted teams and our current standby teams until 10 AM EST tomorrow, May 31, and will open to any interested teams after that point. Teams who are interested in registering should contact Aaron Rosenberg at [email protected] as soon as they are able to commit to attending.

To clarify, the remaining 3 spots will be assigned as follows:

1) Teams currently on the waitlist who commit by 10 tomorrow.
2) Teams currently on the standby list who commit to become paying teams by 10 tomorrow, ordered within this list by what their position on the standby list was.
3) Any teams not meeting criteria 1 or 2, including waitlist/standby teams who tell us after 10 tomorrow, and teams on neither list who tell us at any time, ordered by when they e-mail us committing to attend.

Out of curiosity, does PACE already know what the 72 team schedule will look like?

The prelim format will be 9 seeded brackets of 8, with the top two going to the championship playoff group of 18, the next two to the second playoff group of 18, the next two to the third group of 18, and the last two to the fourth group of 18. The playoff groups will each be divided into three brackets of six and play round robins. After the conclusion of the playoff round robins in round 12, teams in the second, third, and fourth tiers will play crossover superplayoffs based on whether they finished in the top two, next two, or bottom two of their playoff group, over rounds 13-16, and then those teams will be done. Teams in the top tier will play crossover superplayoffs based on finishing in the top or bottom three of their playoff group, which requires six games plus a bye and will extend to round 19 for those teams only. The championship superplayoff teams will be ranked by record against other superplayoff teams and then play an ACF-style final (clear by 2 wins outright, ahead by 1 gets advantage in weighted best-of-three, tie played off on one game).

Prelims: 9 groups of 8. As under our 64-team format, each group plays a round-robin (Rounds 1-7) and splits 2/2/2/2 with tiebreakers as needed.
Playoffs: In each level, the 18 teams will split into 3 groups of 6. Each team plays a round-robin (Rounds 8-12). In the top tier, each group will split 3/3. In the other tiers, each group will split 2/2/2. Tiebreakers as needed. This will be completed (including tiebreakers) on Saturday.
Superplayoffs/Placement: In the bottom three tiers, each new group of 6 will crossover (Rounds 13-16). In the top tier, the top nine and the next nine will crossover (6 games in 7 rounds, Rounds 13-19).
Finals: As always, tiebreakers if needed and with a one-game final, two-game final, or no final as needed.

Long and short of it, the top level superplayoffs will feature 9 teams rather than 8, and all teams will be guaranteed 16 games.

The extended registration has now closed. Spots 71 and 72 will be filled by standby teams.
