Loyola Academy Spring Tournament (LAST) 4/13

Post by MorganV »

Loyola Academy in Wilmette, IL will be hosting a mirror of the JAMES set, co-written by Thomas Jefferson HS and LASA, on April 13th, 2013.

Due to staffing constraints (ICT is this weekend) we'll be instituting a soft cap of 12 teams, playing a full round robin for 11 games + ACF finals. If there is enough demand and promise of staff from other teams, we will consider expanding to 18.

The cost will be $70 (prior to discounts) per team.

Discounts:
-$5 per working buzzer system (as necessary)
-$10 per dedicated staffer (as necessary)
-$10 for traveling greater than 100 mi.

Checks should be made out to "Loyola Academy" and sent c/o Matt Laird.

To register, please email me at [email protected].

Will the JAMES set's trash packet be played? If so, how?

"E Team" would like to express interest in a team for this event.

Tentatively expressing interest in attending this. Probably only one team though; WYSE State is apparently the previous day.
Also, wow Shreyas, I'm starting to suspect that you've just dropped out of high school and are trying to hide it from everyone. Isn't this like your fifth unaffiliated tournament this year?

EDIT: Ironically enough, I will not be attending. But my teammates definitely will.

If people are interested, we can for sure do a shootout on the trash packet after the tournament or at lunch. I can't see us having a real side event with only one packet, but a shootout should be fine.

I would just rather spend my Saturdays playing real quizbowl rather than Protobowl, teaching my kids to do the same, and keeping our program strong as we look to play at PACE this year (and hopefully years to come). Whether our coach can come with us or not, we are trying to learn things and get better. I don't think it's bad to play a bunch of tournaments unaffiliated for that reason.

Also, just so that we don't get too off topic: Morgan, if there is interest for two unaffiliated teams (E Team A and B), is there any way we would be able to bypass the moderator requirement? The entire reason we can't go as Metea Valley is because our coach (the only able moderator we would be able to provide otherwise) won't be there.

I think it's a great sign when people go to tournaments unaffiliated. It's a lot harder to get a team together for an event if you don't have a coach going and the school isn't paying for it.

Our moderator situation seems relatively secure at the moment; I don't know if we'll end up expanding the field or not but we'll be glad to accommodate this.

Shreyas--if you do want to play NSC this year, have your coach register a.s.a.p.--space is filling up!

With a few days remaining, we are at 11 teams. If anyone can register an additional team or has not yet registered and is interested in doing so, please contact me ASAP. otherwise, we will scrape together a third house team.

I hope this tournament went well for everyone, even with the password problem with two of the packets.

We don't plan to clear this set until at least the fall, as we are trying to host more mirrors, so please refrain from any open discussion of the set until it is. A usergroup for specific and general discussion of JAMES (and the trash set, too, if you guys did end up playing that) will be created soon.
