UIUC ABT presents Earlybird (10/06/12)

Post by BGSO »

This is the official announcement for the Earlybird Tournament, which will be held at the University of Illinois on Saturday, October 13, 2011.

WHERE:

This tournament will be held in the English Building http://www.fs.uiuc.edu/ada/0044.html. It has been the site of the last 3 Earlybird tournaments.

It is suggested that teams park in lot E3, which is just southwest of the English building, adjacent to the Main Library. The signs in the lot indicate that parking is not permitted there without a permit, but parking is permitted on weekends.

QUESTIONS:We'll be using the MSU/UD collaborative tournament.

FORMAT:
The Earlybird tournament will use mACF format, with powers. In particular, Earlybird will be a 4-on-4 tournament; matches will be 20/20, with sudden-death tiebreakers; bonuses are three parts read one at a time, and there will be no bouncebacks.

In terms of tournament structure, we usually use some form of round robin, followed by rebracketing and an ACF-format final.

WHO WE'RE TRYING TO ATTRACT:
The University of Illinois ABT is pleased to invite all interested teams from any state to attend this tournament. In the past, we've attracted teams from not just Illinois but also Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, and Missouri; we hope those teams will return and bring their state compatriots. Everyone will have the chance to play good teams on good questions. We're also interested in receiving second, third, ... teams from the same school.

COST:

The base registration fee is $65. Teams may receive a $5 discount for each working buzzer set they bring up to $10, for a minimum registration fee of $55 per team ($45 should staffers be needed). Subsequent teams after the first will be $55. Should we require staffers from schools they will receive a $10 discount per staffer off of their overall registration team.

REGISTRATION:
If you're interested in registration or have any other questions in general, please e-mail me, David Garb at Dggarb at gmail dot com. Please use "Earlybird" as your subject line.

QUESTIONS:
This tournament will use the MSU/UD Collaborative Tournament.

FIELD:
Bloomington 2
Fenton 1
Homewood 2
Wheaton North 2
Dwight Township 1
Chatham Glenwood 2
St. Ignatius 2
Dunbar 1
Carbondale 2
Champaign Central 2
Centennial 1

Total: 18 teams, A lot of buzzers

Hey, just so everyone knows, this tournament is moving to 10/6/12.

Edited the topic title to reflect that--mgmt.

Can someone from MSHSAA clarify wether or not, after the date change, that this is still MSHSAA certified? Apparently there is a rule that doesn't allow teams to compete until the second Saturday in October.

Does this mean your college novice tournament is moving to the 13th?

As far as whether it will still be MSHSAA certified, I doubt it. Missouri teams are forbidden from competing until the second Saturday of October because of MSHSAA's regulations. I don't know if there's ever been a precedent for them to revoke certification, though, from a previously certified tournament.

EDIT: Charlie is correct downthread, MSHSAA is not going to certify Earlybird because it falls before the defined season for Quiz Bowl Teams in Missouri.

It won't be MSHSAA-certified. Whether a tournament was previously certified is irrelevant.

if it makes any difference, this new date is also an SAT date that would make it difficult/impossible for at least two teams (Macomb and ourselves) who would like to come.

Yah is there anyway you can change the date back? I really would like to go to this, but I don't think I could see myself convincing the DCC coaches to go if Ladue can't go, who, acording to Ben Zhang, was interested in going to this. I know the date change also prevents, among others, Morgan Venkus and Tristan Willey from attending, as the SAT subject tests are on this date.
Edit: oops, looks like Morgan beat me to the punch

On one hand, I'm probably taking SAT Subjects that day. On the other hand, I have a football game the next Friday and would probably not be able to come, but it's more likely on that date that I could make it.

Right now, there is nothing on the Illinois calendar on 10/13, but it's their call.

However as IHSSBCA "Keeper of the Calendar", the TDs and I try our best to schedule tournaments that don't conflict. But as more and more people host tournaments, this is getting to be near impossible, and there may very well be a tournament later in the year where several teams may not be in attendance due to conflicts.

Then, college TDs have a much more difficult time scheduling tournaments: there are often multiple activities going on each weekend, and in many cases there isn't a single or central person scheduling facilities (the college students on the board can certainly delineate this further).

I know Early Bird is one of the tournaments that everyone looks forward to, because it is usually the first tournament of the season and it's a well run tournament with quality questions and 10 + games; I'm just trying to make the high school contingent more aware of the planning and other logistics that go into scheduling a tournament. At this point, they may be locked into 10/6 and be unable to change it.

Yeah, just to confirm, Jacob is incorrect. MSHSAA is totally blind when it comes to sanctioning tournaments just because they have precedence of being sanctioned. If something about the tournament violates MSHSAA's rules, in this case, this event being in the time of year that is banned, that automatically means the tournament cannot be sanctioned. Personally, I think recent years prove that UIUC Earlybird is able to attract enough local teams to totally justify running the tournament whether or not there are some out of staters, so I'm not going to beg them to change anything if their main goal is to fill the field and run it for whoever wants to come, but yeah, if their intention with the tournament is to make it be a place where good out of state teams will be willing to drive in and meet Illinois people, it would be a not great choice to run it before the MSHSAA season. Anyway, if UIUC is fine with the date, then I guess that just means all you people who want to get the best preparation for nationals will instead have to just make that trip over to Missouri and play NUMBER ONE RANKED LADUE.

We changed the date to accommodate more teams for our college tournament on 10/13, Illinois Fall.
This decision is best for our club and the combined quality of both fields.

Obviously you'll still get a good field, but I know that a few of us were banking on this being a tournament really early in the year with a mini-nationals field. It's just pure selfishness for a chance to get chance to play Ladue, but obviously it's up to you guys.

While moving this tournament to 10/6 certainly has ensured the non-presence of a Ladue team, there was no guarantee of us going to Earlybird on 10/13.

Like I said, I run big tournaments at MU and it's totally annoying to have people complain about your dates because they don't work for a select few teams, when the bottom line of running a good tournament is to simply fill the field with anybody and then make your profit to pay for the club. That's the bottom line, and if you can meet that goal, then there's no real reason to change the date just to make a few people happy. If you want to play Ladue sometime this year, there's always tournaments in Missouri that they go to.

Bloomington (IL) is interested in attending this meet. Right now, put us down for one team with two buzzer sets and a willing staffer. I am hoping to bring two teams, but I am not sure of our numbers as of yet.

Looking forward to it.

Now that is has been confirmed that this tournament will be using our set, presumably you and your team won't be coming to this, since you'll be at our mirror. Issue resolved, even if not to your satisfaction.

Hi, I hope everyone enjoyed the set today. Since it will be used at several other tournaments, please confine discussion to the private forum, which can be accessed through your user control panel by requesting membership in "MSU/UD set discussion". I'd thank to thank David and the rest of the crew for a great meet. The moderators were fantastic and the tourney was run very smoothly. Thanks to all the teams and staff for making this a wonderful way to kick-off the 2012-2013 SB season. Best of luck to all, and congrats to Dunbar for taking home the championship.
