QUARK at Alabama (10/13)
Greetings!
The date of this tournament will be Saturday, October 13. I will be the TD for this event. The tournament will be held at Gordon Palmer Hall. I'm currently looking into the parking situation.
NEW STUFF! We will be running a mirror of ANFORTAS directly after this event concludes.
At the moment, field cap will be 10 + 2n teams, where n = number of rooms that can be staffed by volunteer help from other schools. I will expand this if I feel more comfortable with the staffing situation.
Copied from the original announcement:
--
Distribution (per round):
4/4 Literature
4/4 History
4/4 Science
3/3 Art (1/1 Painting, 1/1 Music, 1/1 Other Arts)
3/3 RMP (1/1 each)
1/1 SS
1/1 Geo/CE/Academic Other (with at least 0/1 or 1/0 being Geo)
There will not be trash at this tournament. We might, however, write a trash tossup per round to be played for the amusement of the teams at the host's discretion.
Length:
All tossups will be at least six full lines (in ten point TNR) and a max of eight full lines. I expect most tossups will end somewhere in the seventh line before powermarking. The majority of bonus parts will be two lines, though some will use part of the third line for clues.
Difficulty:
We are aiming for slightly above regular difficulty. This means that all our bonuses will have truly easy parts expected from a regular tournament along with mostly reasonable middle parts. It is only in the third parts of bonuses and a minority of tossup answer lines that will be considered harder than regular. We expect top teams to get around 20 ppb.
--
Fee structure: NEW INFORMATION and changes for this event.
$75 entry fee per team flat. His viciousness, the Archdemon of Quizbowl, has deemed all traveling teams worthy of a $35 discount. As this is a big discount, this will be the only discount, however still bring your buzzers and other necessary stuffs as you are well aware that quizbowl events need such things to function and it's always good to have more equipment than needed.
Eligibility:
Open teams will be allowed as long as the formation of super teams (as determined by me) does not occur.
Registration:
To register, you can contact me at husbandofsamus at gmail dot com.

The field hasn't changed in a while. I'm probably going to send something out reminding people that this is still happening rather soon.jmannor2 wrote:Can we get a field update for this?

People should really sign up for this, I'd rather not have to play a quintuple round robin. The Ununtiable Twine wrote:The field hasn't changed in a while. Agreed. I sent out a reminder to teams that this is still happening. I also am in the process of reserving rooms at Gordon Palmer Hall for this event.Sulawesi Myzomela wrote:People should really sign up for this, I'd rather not have to play a quintuple round robin. The Ununtiable Twine wrote:The field hasn't changed in a while. Guys, please sign up for this. I had the privilege of already playing this set and it's a very good housewrite.

You better come, we have an emerging rivalry that needs to continue.jmannor2 wrote:There is a 50/50 chance of an Auburn team at this. I should know more by tomorrow.
We'll we're coming and Alabama's gonna have teams, so if Auburn comes it will sort of resemble a good tournament. Teams from the rest of the south need to go to things, especially tournaments like this on good, regular (ish) sets. I mean, where are Vanderbilt, Chattanooga, Ole Miss, North Georgia, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Florida, Tulane, and all other kinds of schools?wd4gdz wrote:I'm able and willing to attend, but the field size doesn't look promising.

There's nothing like bad blood! This rivalry will probably continue very shortly. We need new non-Sundberg/Beyer rivalries in the region, I need some entertainment.Sulawesi Myzomela wrote:You better come, we have an emerging rivalry that needs to continue.jmannor2 wrote:There is a 50/50 chance of an Auburn team at this. Re: QUARK at Alabama (10/13)
The opening post has been updated to announce our mirror of ANFORTAS as well as new fee information. The field has been updated as well.
We're probably going to start around 9:30 or so as well but if everything is in order we can start earlier.

Re: QUARK at Alabama (10/13)
Incidentally, we are writing trash tossups to be played for "fun" before the real rounds, in the spirit of QUARK at Michigan. (Only with an Alabama quizbowl flavor; expect references to hard math, Arkansas politics, analytic philosophy, obscure Nintendo games, college sports, David Foster Wallace and Haruki Murakami, and trashy pop music.)

Alright, staaaaaats can be found here.
http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... ats/final/
Note: We also gave a prize to the person with the most points throughout the day on our trash questions, that person was none other than Jonathan Thompson. In addition, the neg award was vehemently rejected by Billy - once he saw what it was, he threw it back at me. I can assure you that no Sundbergs were physically harmed during this tournament.

Yes, this is what was thrown at me. We nearly bought the whole series of books, I would have been taken down if we had. We'll be sure to come up with an interesting neg prize for this week's competition.jmannor2 wrote:From what I saw mid-air, I'm pretty sure it was a novelization of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.merv1618 wrote:I'm curious as to what said prize was.The Ununtiable Twine wrote:In addition, the neg award was vehemently rejected by Billy - once he saw what it was, he threw it back at me.

This was thrown at me after Billy rejected it, and I think it's in our possession somewhere. If so, it may be re-gifted as neg prize at some point...The Ununtiable Twine wrote:Yes, this is what was thrown at me.
