I just thought I would start this thread for next year for the discussion of Texas quizbowl-related items.

Re: Texas 2012-2013
End of year ranking for Cistercian "A" was 16th -- oh, well, it is what it is.
However, I think our 2012 - 2013, all-seniors "A" team will do well.
And our "B" team (120th final ranking) next year will show some tremendous improvement,
both in rankings and overall competitive play.

TQBA ran a mirror of KABO September 1st. It was full RR among 10 teams followed by an optional power-matched game. Rice went undefeated. The second-place team, CRACK, was a team of former LASA players with former Seven Lakes player Daniel Chapman. LASA A and St. John's were both 7-3.

Re: Texas 2012-2013
NHBB will run the Texas state event at LASA on February 9. LASA has also expressed interest in hosting an event in the fall semester. We will finalize a date for that shortly; the most likely is December 1.

Full Stats from the 2012 TQBA Houston Holiday Hoedown (held on December 8, 2012) are available here: http://www.texasquizbowl.org/d/@121208HoHoHo/
The event was won by St. John's Virtue, while Cistercian A finished in 2nd.
NAQT's stats can be found here (http://naqt.com/stats/tournament-teams. ... playoffs=1) - the other link is from Texas Quiz Bowl and is in SQBS format.
EDIT: Added NAQT Link

Re: Texas 2012-2013
Hopefully the national posted rankings -- when next they come out -- will reflect these results.
I thought the PB numbers looked particularly strong for Cistercian "A" given the field of schools there.
Also, our Cistercian "D" team did an amazing job given the fact that they've never played together.
I will be interested to see what our friends at PACE do with these results.

Re: Texas 2012-2013
It is worth noting that both LASA and St. John's split their A teams at this event.
LASA's two semifinalist teams were three players each. The team of three juniors had one normal A team member on it. In two matches with Cistercian, this LASA subset lost twice by a total of 65 points.
The St. John's team that won the tournament was two juniors and two freshmen; the rest of the St. John's A team was on a squad that was eliminated in the quarterfinals. In two matches against the tournament-winning St. John's split-squad, Cistercian lost by a combined 235 points.
Cistercian will have a chance to prove their quality at Texas Invitational.

Re: Texas 2012-2013
I hope that the latest national rankings help to add even more context to the merit of our collective competitive spirit here in Texas as well as to the relative merit which our own Cistercian "A" team showed. Texas is a great place to play QB, and, of course, we know it's a long way to Atlanta and beyond!
For those who need a convenient link to the newest rankings:

Perhaps someone who knows the history of these things better than I do can help me here, but to go from UR (unranked) to a national ranking of #2 is a nice bit of news copy.

Yes, when you compose that bit of copy, do make sure to note that the alleged #2 team in the country was unable to win a tournament where the other two elite teams in the state played split-squads. Or would that be inconvenient?Remember-the-Alamo-Remember-Goliad wrote:Perhaps someone who knows the history of these things better than I do can help me here, but to go from UR (unranked) to a national ranking of #2 is a nice bit of news copy.
Indeed, it does seem to trouble Cistercian to win tournaments outside of Oklahoma...

Re: Texas 2012-2013
"the alleged #2 team in the country"??? Oh, please!
As far as I am aware, the # 2 team is not "alleged" to be such in any way, shape, or form.
But, hey, in the spirit of the season, I, too, can say, Ho, Ho, Ho!
PS: When my students finish their college apps, I'm sure they'll be happy
to attend more tournaments. However, as has already been stated,
I didn't designate Cistercian "A" with a # 2 ranking -- someone else did.
Rankings go up, rankings go down -- be patient -- I'm sure everyone
will see what s/he wants given the passage of time.
More to come later, but we return ourselves to regularly scheduled programming
with the grading of senior final exams - Joy to the world!
