UMD mirror of KABO: Kurtis and Ashvin's Backyard Open (8/4)

Post by Oak's Grandson »

This is an announcement for the UMD Mirror of KABO: Kurtis and Ashvin's Backyard Open that will take place the weekend of August 4th, 2012.
The mirror will take place in our usual location of the Jimenez Building and teams should please arrive by 9:00

To register, you can post in this thread or email me at [email protected]. The fee will be $80/team (as per the main site) with discounts for buzzers and staff.

That night as well as Sunday, we will be running several side events after the main tournament. If you would like a particular side event to be added to this list, let me know though a more formal announcement of our hosting of those events is likely in the works.

Field can be viewed here.

Schedule can be viewed here.

I'm registering.

I'm also requesting that Ike's myth tournament ANFORTAS be added to the list of side events.

Since there doesn't seem to be many people signing up for this tournament, would it make any sense to just have a draft of the people that show up if the number of teams stays really small?

I'm always intrigued by draft ideas, though in fact we discovered at Sack that a very small group actually takes much of the interesting element out of it. You need at least a medium-sized field decently stocked with talent to make it worthwhile.

That said, I don't expect the field of this event to stay this small - the announcement just went up, it's the summer and people aren't around checking the forum that often, and these events traditionally draw a decent crowd to Maryland. So I'm hopeful we can get a
large enough group to put it to a vote (I'd be down).

Yeah, there's no way we're not playing that; everyone should have a chance to be mythxterminated by Seth Teitler at least once in their quizbowl career. For reference, I'm aware of the following side event candidates:

-ANFORTAS
-Technology Tournament
-Mike Cheyne's Movie Tournament (Un Cheyne Andalou?)
-CAHLFS (that tossup-only trash tournament that was allegedly not smash-your-own-face-in-with-a-hammer terrible)

I'm also anticipating plenty of time Sunday afternoon for quizbowl basketball, which I hope will be well-attended by the many athletic luminaries of the game.

Is there a reason you're opposed to a draft for a small, informal field at a summer event? I don't think it's an unreasonable idea.

Considering it's a tossup-only summer trash tournament to be attended by many people who didn't play CAHLFS, I don't think that rules it out at all. It might make it a possible candidate to run concurrently with another event, but I think the weekend can accommodate all of these events given their limited lengths.

EDIT: It seems that Yogesh Raut, than whom there is none more peripheral, will be joining us.

As anticipated, like a dozen people told me at CO that they were planning on coming to this tournament, but were waiting for like one or two more quality squads to join the field. I will leave it to You the Reader to conclude the inevitable result of this approach, but it would be great if everyone intending to come would sign up (a hard verbal given at CO to me, noted person not running this tournament, does not count). Based on talking to everyone this weekend, though, I anticipate at least 3-4 solid teams' worth of people adding to the field in the next few days.
Could we maybe play the Bayou a Drink packets at some point?
Is there a more recent, not-publicly-available set of this tournament? If the Bayou-a-Drank tournament you're referencing is the same one that's been available on Waste Bin/foolishly sampled without mitigating alcohol at Maryland summer practices, well. . . let's call that "Plan B."

In all seriousness, it seems like the following events have a major demand and are almost certain to happen:
-Technology
-Myth
-Cheyne Andalou
-Basketball (after activities conclude Sunday, in all likelihood, but potentially also Friday evening if there's no room/depending on preference).

Of course, that's somewhat contingent (again) on the people who voiced their opinions to me last weekend actually signing up for the tournament. Since none of the above events involve bonuses and KABO isn't expected to be a super-long tournament, I imagine we can run one event Saturday evening and the other two Sunday and still wrap up by the early afternoon. Those two trash tournaments remain possibilities, but it seems like their are concerns over quality/some people have heard them/both.

EDIT: Just FYI, if a "UMD KABO Scheduling Compromise" thread appears on this board, I will ask Matt Weiner to reassign the usernames of all participants in the ensuing debate to major figures from the Wikipedia Dogopoly Wars. You have been warned.

Mike's proposed schedule sounds good here.

I suspect I'll be leaving some time in the early/mid-afternoon on Sunday, so if there's a call for changing the order, my only request is to keep KABO and ANFORTAS on Saturday and/or Sunday morning.

It might be useful to get a count of who is going to play or staff what side events (if the schedule allows it). I'll play Bayou a Drank and Un Cheyne Andalou, and I'll staff ANFORTAS and tech if needed (or possibly play them if no staff is needed).

I updated the Google Doc at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... 2T1E#gid=5 to include fields for the side tournaments.

Daniel Hothem is my transportation to where I'm spending Saturday night, but if he's staying for myth and film I would like to play both.

By the way, I'm assuming that myth and tech are doubles. I put movies down as a shootout, but if people want to make that a team event, I won't stop you.

I don't want to seem like a Scrooge, so if you play movies as shootout $5 or so seems like a reasonable price.
