Chicago Open?

Post by The King's Flight to the Scots »

Hey, what's going on with this? Normally this is about the time of year when this gets announced and people start making plans. Any idea who's editing this year?

More seriously, Ryan and I talked about it this weekend, and we're both going to pass, as is our prerogative as recent editors. I don't know Eric Kwartler's mind but I suspect that he's not interested in reprising. Unless that changes, the editorship is open to all applicants; anyone who is interested can email Ryan or Eric or myself and we will select the next editor.

Yeah, I concur with Jerry - I propose anyone interested in head editing CO shoot both jerry and I an email and we'll make a decision. Don't everyone bang down the door at once. (I suspect Eric has no dog in the fight, but I'll run things by him and he can voice an opinion if he'd like).

I don't have time to head edit this tournament, but I could help edit areas like visual arts, history, your choice if this makes it easier for someone else to make a commitment to being the head editor.

Obviously picking up the CO slack is Ryan's prerogative as the previous editor, and I'm sure we'd all have a good time with that. It would be nice to get this figured out and announced by the end of April.

We also should probably finalize or at least get a preliminary idea of what the weekend schedule will be. Is anyone interested in doing a full-length Sunday trash tournament? Do we just want a series of side events?

My lit tournament will be ready in time for CO too. It'll be pretty hard, so I think it would be good for the CO field.

NOOOOOOOOO, how will power tossups on Hairspray?!!!

It seems like there are a lot of potential side events floating around--Will's tech thing, the two lit things, my film thing, probably more. While I like a good trash tournament more than anyone, maybe this is the year to seriously consider some sort of "side event Sunday"?

My vote is for a weekend of literature side tournaments.

Also, I'd enjoy that classical music tournament, but I suspect the audience for it won't be all that large.

The proliferation of potential CO side events in spring reminds me of a certain page in my AP Biology textbook. It featured a picture of a mama duck and her dozen or so adorable ducklings, with the caption "many more organisms are produced than will survive".

A heartfelt second to the former, and the equally heartfelt hope that even if the latter does not materialize as a side event (due to potential lack of interest) that at least a shootout or something happens on it.

There has also been some discussion of having a guerilla style trash theme tournament on Sunday. This is what should happen.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, I would be interested in editing a few subjects for this tournament. Since it sounds like no one has volunteered to head edit yet (except for Ryan's nomination), I suppose I'll try to organize some coalition of editors for this event and submit a bid to Jerry/Ryan/Eric if I get a group of people capable of editing the entire set. If you're interested in editing some section of CO this year and want to be part of this coalition, send me an e-mail at [email protected] indicating what subjects you want to edit and what subjects you'd be okay editing but aren't your first choice.

Well, Ike has just emailed me saying he "might" be able to head edit, but he doesn't want to commit until after Nats.

I've been deliberately dragging my feet on this, because I don't want to stupidly come out and say that I'll do it, if I don't feel confident that I'll have enough time to swing it. I thought I would know within a couple of days whether I would say yes, but I keep pushing it back to be on the safe side.

If I do say yes, I at the very least need a classical music editor and a science editor, or I won't do it. Bentley - would you take classical music (and perhaps a portion of history - we'll see on that)?

My advice to qb-land out there is to go ahead and form teams and start writing questions - you know the basic distribution.
