2012 Texas Invitational (Feb 17-18)
Texas Quiz Bowl is pleased to announced that on February 17-18, we will host our Texas Invitational in Houston at St. John's School (2401 Claremont, Houston 77019). The Texas Invitational will be immediately followed by an edition of the 2012 ACF Regionals (on Feb 18-19). Teams can expect to play 30 matches over the 3 days of the tournaments.
Texas Invitational is a mirror of the 2012 NAQT SCT Div II for secondary teams. Remaining spots are limited and preference will be given to more competitive teams. If your team is interested please email romeroc-at-gmail-dot-com. This tournament will be played as a complete round robin followed by a final if necessary. A final will only be played if top teams are tied after the round robin. This tournament's first 7 rounds will begin at Friday, February 17th at 7 p.m. and will be complete around 11 p.m. Round 8 will commence at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning and the prelims will be complete around noon. Finals if necessary will begin at noon. The entry fee is $80. Lunch and Dinner on Saturday are provided. Please see: http://www.texasquizbowl.org/events/021 ... itational/ for additional details.

Re: 2012 Texas Invitational (Feb 17-18)
This strikes me as remarkably unfair. Teams that wish to play good QB should be given every opportunity to play good QB, even if that is at a detriment to "better" teams. Additionally, while it is one thing to set a sort of minimum requirement that any team can reasonably meet, such as having qualified for a national tournament, having the TD decide who is worthy of competing is rather ridiculous as teams don't know what standard they have to meet and may see themselves booted out of a field should a more "qualified" team appear. I'd strongly consider that you set an actual cutoff, one that is not simply based on a set of rankings mind you. Specifically, I recommend explicitly adding teams qualified for one or both Nationals over those that have not, if you believe that you must set a cutoff.Romero wrote:Remaining spots are limited and preference will be given to more competitive teams.

Re: 2012 Texas Invitational (Feb 17-18)
I cannot agree with this more. You're seriously going to turn away a team because Fred Morlan says they aren't as good as another team? Absolutely ridiculous. Accept teams on a first-come-first-serve basis like every other tournament.Smuttynose Island wrote:This strikes me as remarkably unfair. Re: 2012 Texas Invitational (Feb 17-18)
I agree and disagree. IMSA is not going to pay $2500 or more (in travel, hotels, and registration) for a weekend of tournaments to play Houston Central High School C, and I imagine Bellarmine, Loyola, Dorman, and the rest feel the same way. If you want to attract a national-caliber field, it has to be worth teams' while and money. On the other hand, setting a standard would be a nice touch. Otherwise, you may have Fred's #51 team wondering if they are good enough to even try to sign up, and may feel discouraged to do so when they might otherwise be quite welcome. Some possible cutoffs would be (as per Daniel's suggestion) qualifying for both nationals or already being registered for PACE NSC.Smuttynose Island wrote:This strikes me as remarkably unfair. I'm not quite sure how I feel about the way this is phrased, but I sincerely hope that no team that registers and is in the field will be bumped for a "bigger name" that registers later.

It is my understanding that we are going to be providing several forms of updates during this event. One room may have a detailed liveblog, while I will be either posting or tweeting round-by-round scores from the control room. If I am tweeting, they will carry a #TQBA hashtag; I may just repeatedly post here though.

The Round 17 match between Bellarmine (14-0-1) and Hunter (14-1) is essentially serving as an advantaged final for the NAQT portion of our event. If Hunter wins, they play once more in a winner-take-all match.

Re: 2012 Texas Invitational (Feb 17-18)
Apparently they refined and edited several D2 packets---IIRC, Henry Gorman said something to this effect during his morning blog today.
EDIT: In the meantime, congratulations to Hunter for defeating a gifted Bellarmine in the final 2 matches to win it all. And kudos to Bellaramine---after playing almost no competitive matches throughout the year, its performance over the last 24 hours was nothing short of stellar. Were it not for a great comeback by Hunter in round 17, where it was down by 120 points early on, Bellarmine would have marched through this tremendous field with only a tie to blemish a 15-0-1 record...But to its credit, Hunter never allowed Bellarmine to gain that 15th win. Still, this was a great overall performance by Bellarmine. And, it seems, Hunter has now begun its final push towards both Nationals, probably entering both as the overall favorite based on its triumph today. But, there is still another tournament at the Texas Invitational, so maybe these comments are somewhat premature. We shall see.

We played 19 rounds today and finished at 8:40. Hunter won the NAQT portion by beating Bellarmine twice in a row in the last two rounds. The prelims for ACF Regionals were also played with the top 12 teams doing a playoff tomorrow morning. Stats can be found at texasquizbowl.org.

I'm sure somebody has asked this somewhere, but is Kealing a feeder school for either LASA or Seven Lakes? Because if so, those programs can expect to be very good for a very long time.

Re: 2012 Texas Invitational (Feb 17-18)
Just wanted to say thanks to Chris Romero and the multitudes who worked on putting this together. Repeat that phrase "30 matches in 24 hours" a few times - it was startling to experience that and of course would have been impossible without some amazing organization, incredible readers, helpful staff, and some solid bar-b-q!
We had a wonderful weekend, and while we were able to dodge the Bellarmine bullet on Saturday, they took the air our of our tires on Sunday morning, and kept on deflating teams all day. A tip of the cap to them for true excellence - you couldn't ask for three nicer guys to lose to. ; )
The opportunity to compete against all these amazing teams was a gift - there was a spirit not only of good quiz bowl but real community and camaraderie in Houston, and I'm glad we were part of it.

We too would like to effusively thank Mr. Romero and the moderating staff for this fantastic tournament, and all the amazing teams we had the privilege to play against for their skills and sportsmanship. I am not as eloquent as Mr. Young, so I will stop now.
