ANNOUNCEMENT: Peaceful Resolution at Chicago (3/3/2012)
The University of Chicago is pleased to announce its house-written tournament for March 3, 2012: "the Peaceful Resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis." Ike Jose of Illinois has kindly agreed to co-edit the tournament with me, and Gautam Kandlikar will be our science consultant. The writing team consists of several of my Chicago teammates: Connie Prater, Tracy Lee, Charles Tian, Sam Bailey, and George Dewey.
This tournament is intended as preparation for ACF Nationals. Consequently, we will be largely adhering to the ACF Nationals distribution. We also intend to ruthlessly control difficulty--we would like to make sure there are no dead tossups or impossible bonus parts.
The tournament will be open to anyone. However, we may attempt to ensure a competitive marketplace by limiting superteams. If you'd like to sign up, please leave a note in this thread.
Distribution
4/4 Literature: 1/1 American, 1/1 British, 1/1 European, and 1/1 World.
4/4 History: 1/1 American, 1/1 European (not British), 1/1 World, 1/0 or 0/1 British, and 1/0 or 0/1 Ancient/Classical.
4/4 Science: 1/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Physics, 1/0 or 0/1 Math or CS, and 1/0 or 0/1 Astronomy or Earth Science.
3/3 Arts: 1/1 Painting, 1/1 Music, and 1/1 Other (including Architecture, Sculpture, Installation, Ballet/Dance, Film, Photography, UDPATE: NO Pornography).
3/3 RMP: 1/1 Religion, 1/1 Mythology, and 1/1 Philosophy.
1/1 Social Science: Psychology, Economics, Anthropology, Sociology, and Political Science.
2/1 Other Academic, Geography, and Current Events
Fees
Base fee per team: $120
Discount for an additional team from the same university: -$10
Functional buzzers: -$10 each
Travel: --$15 per team if three or more members travel in excess of 150 miles.
Mirrors
I'm looking for mirrors. If anyone wants to host, contact me at msteinbaum [at] gmail. It would probably be best to hold mirrors on either March 3rd or March 10th, 2012, but later proposals may be entertained.
Update: It appears that Harvard and George Mason will each hold a mirror on March 3rd.
Further Update: North Georgia College and State University will hold a mirror on March 3rd.

Why not? I'm sure that's to some players' advantage. Plus, it's the easiest subject to study for.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: Peaceful Resolution at Chicago (3/3/2012)
Will you ask about the classics of the genre, I hope? I think you should concentrate on the works that people will probably have some awareness of rather than trendy flavors of the month. For instance, in the bonuses, I do not wish you to ask about some fifth tier Linda Lovelace film for instance, when a character from Deep Throat or Debbie Does Dallas would suffice. Please take care to produce empathetic bonus parts. I hope you consult Dan Passner on these questions.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: Peaceful Resolution at Chicago (3/3/2012)
Given the audience, I think this would be at least one sub-distribution in which it's impossible to write an impossible bonus part. What I'd really like to do is toss up a body part, using clues from different works in the medium.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: Peaceful Resolution at Chicago (3/3/2012)
I think those kinds of common link questions tend to not play very well and end up rewarding surface level knowledge. If I were to write a pornography question, I would write on a major character or work of the genre. Instead, I might get annoyed that the only time The Devil in Miss Jones is mentioned is in a tossup on a body part. I would urge you to reconsider utilizing these types of common link questions because otherwise people might end up getting penalized for knowledge.

Well Mike, I submit that these types of questions are designed to reward surface-level knowledge. If you object to how this category works at the tournament, I look forward to a VERY lively give-and-take in the discussion thread.

So is porn replacing opera (oh god), or is opera part of the music subdistribution? Also, pardon my lack of knowledge, but what does "installation" refer to?

Porn isn't replacing anything, but it is true that 1/1 music will account for all of the musical arts, so I suppose that means there will be slightly less music than there is in some ACF tournaments. Installation refers to the contemporary genre of Installation Art: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Installation_art

No. 50% of the tournament choosing to neg that tossup with "Venus of Urbino" (. . . after clues about a Louis Vuitton bag and Dannon water bottle) doesn't change the fact that it was sent in under the trash distribution.
I kind of skimmed this thread, so I'm assuming the whole fine arts - pornography thing is some kind of quirky physical reaction caused by Marshall Steinbaum's immune system rejecting the proposal of a normal distribution. If for some reason that isn't the case, allow me to tell whichever parties are involved: Please stop being dumb. Not because OH NO PORN or THEY ARE THREATENING THE DISTRIBUTION, BRUCE ARTHUR DEMANDS OUR LIVES FOR THE CAUSE, but because you have just engaged in an extended dialogue about specific answerlines and how they relate to questions you'll be asking at this tournament. So before anyone chooses to toss up ear-dicking, just remember that in quizbowl, it's awfully frowned upon to point at the outfield before you let it swing. And by "it," I mean your assuredly 18-inch penis.
EDIT: I would be upset to be reminded that the specter of Pericles still haunts this site's word filter years after people stopped making 80 posts about dicks/night, but I actually think it reads better now.

Regardless of the resolution to this fascinating distributional debate, I would be delighted to play this open tournament and am accepting teammate applications. Hopefully no one else will sign up and it'll be just me and Rob Carson dueling it out for 14 rounds.

Not to dilute the entertainment value of the most giggle-inducing announcement thread of the season, but I'm sure I'll make it out to this.
I sincerely hope this doesn't get mirrored anywhere, so all talented qb players at the four corners of the universe are forced to converge on Chicago. Or else go without porn.

If anyone is interested in writing music or astronomy (or both!) for this tournament, I would be obliged for the help. I can't say that the salary is Michael Arnold money, but you'll certainly be compensated proportionately. As the announcement says, it looks like the tournament will be run at Chicago, GMU, and Harvard, so keep that in mind if you want to play rather than write. If you are interested, please get in touch: msteinbaum [at] gmail.

It's possible that Seth/Selene constitute a superteam by themselves, but I told Selene that you two could play together because I fear that Huitzilipoatlicoatl, the Aztec god of mayhem, would exact swift revenge were I to tear you apart.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: Peaceful Resolution at Chicago (3/3/2012)
A couple of things:
1. Pornography is not actually happening. I would like to apologize profusely to Mike Cheyne. More seriously, there's a high school team that wants to come, and thus I realize that pornography might be putting off other high school teams. So to any high-school players or coaches: the tournament will be hard, but it will not have pornography.
2. I gather from the last few comments that Jerry, Rob, Mike, and Bernadette are planning to play together. I was worried about getting into this sort of subjective judgment when I stated our commitment to a competitive marketplace. (As a cursory acquaintance with the anti-trust literature indicates, usable pro-competitive policies are hard to come by and usually ad-hoc.) Nonetheless, I do want to try as best I can to make the field as much like Nationals as possible, which means having open players form very good teams but not absolutely run the field, as I doubt Nationals will be lop-sided.
Since I said Seth and Selene could play together, I'm inclined to let the team named above do so as well. But if that strikes anyone as grossly unfair, or an ill-advised way to go about ensuring competitiveness, please say so. If anti-trust has been tried before in quizbowl, are there any principles that have worked well? I think that I won't let just one of those two teams play, so the alternative I'd consider is ruling both out of bounds.

It's possible, depending on my journal commitment, that I will be playing this tournament as a free agent. Send me an email at [email protected] if you're looking for teammates (and can stomach a month or so of uncertainty about my playing status).

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: Peaceful Resolution at Chicago (3/3/2012)
Judging from the latest BARGE results I'm terrible at quizbowl at this point. Unless this tournament is planning to cater to my strengths by having 2/2 astrophysics in each round like Penn Intergalactic did, I don't think we'll ruin your weekend.Tees-Exe Line wrote:2. I mean, don't take this the wrong way, because I'm quite glad to hear this horrible horrible idea has been abandoned, but if any high schooler lacks the emotional resiliency to endure hearing words written about people having sex, I'm not sure I like his chances of surviving Peaceful Resolution in general.1. I'm obviously biased, but I think it makes more sense to allow the Jerry/Rob/Mike/Bernadette, Laferbrook, and me/Selene teams to remain intact than to split up into 6+ (presumably short-handed) teams--unless the legit college teams playing this event express a (monstrous) preference for the free agent teams to split up, in which case I guess I'm okay with that.Tees-Exe Line wrote:2. I probably won't be here, but I don't see any of those teams as being that crushing a superteam. There are several existing college teams which are probably at their level or above right now, to be honest. There are no Seth/Jerry/Sorice/Rob teams or any crazy stuff like that.

I'd like to declare myself a free agent for this tournament. I know some science and some Pokemon. My email is the one listed under my avatar.

Maybe this isn't the best place to inquire about such things, but is there any more information on the mirrors of this set? Specifically, does GMU still plan on holding their mirror of this event. I'd like to know so that I can work of finding a team to play on at that mirror site.
EDIT: Thanks for the prompt response!

How is the set coming? After Penn Bowl, I figured I'd ask.

Well, of course one might wish for more progress. I suppose I can say in public that Shantanu Jha is now involved with the writing and editing--which people should find reassuring (or at least I do).

Even though we're probably far below the quality of teams this tournament is aimed at, WKU is interested in bringing a team to this.
