Early Autumn Collegiate Novice at NIU (9/17/11)

Post by Irreligion in Bangladesh »

Northern Illinois University will be hosting a mirror of the second Early Autumn Collegiate Novice Tournament on September 17th, 2011. The University of Chicago will also be mirroring this tournament; their mirror will be on October 2nd. We invite you to attend whichever mirror best suits your school in terms of date and location.

The tournament is designed as an introduction to collegiate pyramidal quizbowl; as such, there are some eligibility restrictions to ensure a level playing field.

1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.

2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.

3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.

4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:

i. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits). Time in a post-secondary high school program does not count.

ii. If you were ever on a playoff or top-bracket team at NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC.

iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.

iv. If you have ever won any college tournament.

5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.

If you have questions regarding eligibility, email me.

Cost: The tournament's entry fees are on a per-player, rather than the usual per-team, basis. The base entry fee is $15/player; if a school brings a working buzzer system, that school receives a $5 discount (limit one discount per team). If your school can volunteer an experienced moderator and we verify prior to the tournament that we will need their services, your school receives a $10 discount.

The tournament is designed as a relaxed event in terms of schedule; as such, registration will begin at 10:15 and Round 1 will begin near 10:30. The actual schedule of games will be determined once our field size is set, but all teams are certainly guaranteed a minimum of 7 games, the schedule will very probably guarantee everyone 8 games, and the tournament will have a maximum of 10 games (as that's how many packets we have).

To register, you can email me at [email protected], or the NIU Quiz Bowl Association at [email protected] (which bounces forward to me automatically anyway). Please include your school name in the email; we can settle specifics such as buzzers, staffers, and player names as September 17th approaches. If you'd like to express interest but cannot definitively confirm attendance yet (it's still August, after all), please email that information to me as well.

We look forward to a great start to the quizbowl year!

Illinois will have 3 teams, 1 buzzer (and a backup buzzer if it's needed), and no moderators since they are unneeded.

It'll be confirmed today, but it will almost certainly be DuSable Hall. It doesn't have an address, but if you Google Map search for "Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL," they put the pin in the parking lot you'll need to park in. This map of campus shows parking lot 20/C shortly north of DuSable Hall.

Eight teams competed in the second annual Early Autumn Collegiate Novice Tournament at Northern Illinois University today. Congratulations to Illinois B (Mark Taylor, Ben Parker) for winning the tournament on the tiebreaker of the second game of an advantaged final over Illinois A (Billy Busse, Austin Listerud)!

I'd like to thank our wonderful staff - Dan Donohue, Jonah Greenthal, Mike Laudermith, and Greg Peterson - as always, your help is much appreciated. I'd also like to thank Andrew Hart and the EACNT writing team for a great set; remember that the questions are not yet cleared for public discussion. Finally, thank you to all the players and coaches who came out to start the Midwest quizbowl season with us.

Stats can be found at http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... =standings.

Thank you all for coming! We hope to see you all at ACF Fall NIU in six weeks!
