ANNOUNCEMENT: VCU Open Mirror at Stanford (08/13/11)

Post by Crimson Rosella »

Greetings all,

The Stanford Quiz Bowl Club is pleased to announce that we will be hosting a mirror of this year's VCU Open Academic Tournament on Saturday, August 13th. The fee structure is as follows:

$100 - Base Fee
-$5 for every buzzer system
-$10 for every staffer
-$10 if your team is travelling from further than 200 miles away

We're planning on holding this tournament on the second and third floors of the Keck Science building. Unfortunately, there's restricted access to this building on weekends, so when you arrive, you're going to have to phone me and I'm going to have to come let you in. Keck Science is directly across from the Cantor Arts Center, and there's a parking garage across the street which should be free to park in on weekends. Registration will begin at 8:30, and we plan to begin playing matches at 9:00. It's possible that we'll have a deadline by which we need to have left the building, so please do your best to be on time.

Here's a link on Google Maps to the location of the Keck Science building: http://maps.google.com/maps/place?ftid= ... eZ6plygtlA

To register, please send the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you expect to bring to montoyjh [AT] gmail [DOT] com.

Expected Field:

Mike Bentley et al.
Nikhillarmine
Berkeley
Mills (2)
House (1-2)

EDIT1: Added expected field.
EDIT2: Added details about location, time

This is awesome. I think I and some other people may form a team for this and bring a buzzer system, but I'll let you know when we have official confirmation. If I not, I'll try to come as a free agent.

EDIT: "We" may include people other than Bellarmine.
EDIT2: Changing this because of messages from other people.

Depending on the field, the airfare, and my own hellishly crammed schedule, I may be interested in playing this as a free agent. I'd like to inquire about the availability of sleeping-bag space (couch, floor, table, or other acceptable horizontal surface) since I will be paying entirely out of pocket in the event I do become able to attend. A ride to/from the airport would also be helpful.

It is possible that some of my ASU comrades will also be interested, though I have no information about that yet.

Any updates on the expected field?

Assuming we can work out logistics, it seems likely that I will be in attendance with a friend. We will enter as a free-agent pair and hope to find two teammates at the tournament. We need the most help with music, fine arts, and philosophy.

Looking forward to the tournament!

Yeah it would be cool if some actual college teams in California or prominent members from those teams came to this tournament.

Very much so. Or even non-prominent members of those teams. Would it help to draw a bigger field if Stanford ran a "more accessible" set for this? Maybe not since it's summer break, but just wondering.

Is anyone planning on traveling from around the Seattle area? I'd go, play, and join whatever team if there was a contingent that could provide transportation

Brittany and I are flying. Are you in Seattle this summer, or only for a brief period around this particular tournament?

If you want to drive, you could consider talking to Chris Grubb. He's a teacher and doesn't work full-time during the summer, so he may have the time and the car to make this trip. It's possible that I could convince one or two people to join you guys on the trip. His e-mail address is grubbcc at gmail.

Heads up: The "Kenneth et al" entry *might* have to withdraw for medical reasons. Will probably find out more near the end of the week.

Myself and Nikhil will probably be going together along with (less probably) Sameer. If anyone else wants to tag along with us, you're most welcome to shoot an email to either myself ([email protected]) or Nikhil ([email protected]) and we'll see what we can do to accommodate you.

If you're not a law student this is not an interesting tournament to play.

I think your mileage may vary on this one. Chris R. seemingly had fun and was getting good buzzes on several questions; from what I saw of the lower-room stats, Mike C. also had plenty of knowledge. A lot of the common law stuff will be tough for the non-law student, but I do think that there's a critical mass of things in the set that will engage and entertain someone who knows a little bit about the law, especially in the constitutional law and criminal law part of the distribution. I'm not trying to hard-sell this tournament or anything, but I think there's value in it for those who aren't lawyers.

I didn't really have that much knowledge--the only reason I got questions was because law students left. I mean, I think you can have fun with it, sure, and the cost/time are so minimal that if there's modest interest it can be run, but it was really hard for me as a non law student. I suppose if your mirror only has non law students, more fun could be had.

With all respect to Andrew Hart--and speaking as a former law student myself--I am forced to agree with Mike here. Having heard the questions, I find it hard to imagine taking much interest in them (or answering more than a handful of them) unless you've been through the 1L year at an American law school. Without giving away any of the answers, I'll note that even the constitutional law questions on Supreme Court cases were not, I'm guessing, on things that people who haven't been to law school would have had much exposure to.

On the other hand, amusingly, this tournament is a textbook illustration of the kind of quizbowl that Jerry purports to want in the current thread on CO science. That is: If you want to experience a tournament that basically ONLY rewards people who have taken a certain standard curriculum, and which offers little to no purchase for people who have an interest in the subject matter outside of "what is taught in standard courses," you should check out this set. (Again, this is not meant as disparagement; as someone who has taken the relevant courses, I was amused by these questions.)

yeah, I think Yaphe's comparison of Loblaw with the Jerryist view on curriculum-science is very timely and accurate.

Hi everyone,

I'm very sorry about this, but we've had to change the location we're hosting in due to an oversight on my part about how room scheduling works at Stanford over the summer. It's now going to be held in the Keck Science building, across the street from the Cantor Arts Center and Rodin Sculpture garden. Details of the location and schedule are now in the thread announcement above. Please don't hesitate to e-mail me (montoyjh [at] gmail [dot] edu) with any questions you might have. Also, if you're planning on attending this tournament and haven't let me know via e-mail (or if you're not listed in the "Expected field" above), please do so as soon as possible.

Also, we (Nikhil and I) will possibly be going to an art museum (probably deYoung or SF MOMA) for summer homework after the conclusion of this event on Sunday. If anyone is inclined to go with us, we can try and make arrangements.

Hi everyone, the tournament has concluded. Bellarmine (i. e. Nikhil and Ankit) won first place after winning two games of an advantaged final in which Berkeley had the advantage. Berkeley finished second, and Mike et. al finished third.
