CO Matchmaking

Post by Cheynem »

Even though the date hasn't been set and the tournament hasn't even been announced, it's sufficiently late enough to perhaps warrant the inevitable Chicago Open Team Formation thread (it should be noted that last year's thread was started on March 10, so it's not like I'm jumping the gun here).

To start things off, I am looking for a team. I am good at American related things and not much else although I have crucial game-winning mythology buzzes at the last two Chicago Opens. I would enjoy traveling with people coming from the Michigan area and would be willing to play with them as well if they want. Otherwise, I'm okay playing with whomever.

There's an excellent chance that I'll be in the Cleveland area doing an internship over the summer -- if OSU wants to come maybe I can hitch a ride with them. If not, I don't think I'll go at all.

I haven't missed a Chicago Open in my quizbowl career, and I don't intend to miss this one. If people want me on their team, they should let me know.

Kurtis and I are planning on teaming up for CO (depending on the date of CO and our plans etc) and are looking for teammates, especially those who know stuff we don't (ie stuff that isn't lit or history) :P

I'm looking for teammates. I'm pretty good at chem and decent at other parts of science. I'll also probably have a few decent buzzes on books I have read and classical music.

Mike, the Grand Rapids area seems to be on the shortest route from Midland, so I would be happy to carpool with you.

I think I'll join this parade of Michaels (and their derivatives). I'm also planning to be in the Chicago area around that time, so I'm available and would like a team. I'm an okay history player with a specialty in classics (although since I'm TAing World History next quarter, I'll be all over that), and I pick up occasional buzzes in myth, lit, and other humanities. I'm also prompt in writing questions.

Michael Hausinger and Mik Larsen and I have formed 3/4 of a formidable team of people whose names begin with "Mi." We are currently in negotiations with Dwight Wynne in the unlikely event he comes out to the main site, but if you are interested otherwise in joining this team, give us a holla.

I know the date isn't final, but I have been looking at travel arrangements with the assumption that CO will be held the weekend of July 31.

For the first time in my life, I am not living in Chicago during Chicago Open. I'm looking at hotels that are closer to CO than my parent's house is. If anyone wants to split a hotel room in downtown Chicago with me, I'd be happy to do so. There are deals in the $100-125 per day range for 2 beds available, and I'd be interested in splitting it either two or three ways.

EDIT 6/6: I am playing this tournament with Ted Gioia, Dallas Simons, and Mike Sorice.

I go on Collegiate Discussion annually, so Mike Cheyne alerted me to this thread. This feels like members of Congress finding dates for the 2011 State of the Union.

As a free agent for CO 2011, my main selling point is that I have already written 5 + 5 in science as well as 7 + 5 elsewhere. I could write more here at "work" but not in Gasoline Alley next month.

Last July, two entries were way behind in submitting their packets. One team was bounced by Jerry and replaced by a quartet of free agents granted a dispensation against writing so that there would still be 15 teams and one bye per round. The other team ultimately fulfilled their packet obligations.

I just booked my flight. I'll be getting into Chicago around 2 PM on Friday and leaving late on Monday night. It would be awesome if I could find some people to share a hotel room with on Friday, Saturday and ideally Sunday night. I'm 25 now so I can also be the one who rents a car. Shoot me an e-mail ([email protected]) if you're interested in splitting lodging/transportation.

Is that Google spreadhseet up to date?

If that's not where the action is, I'll just post that I'm working as a CO agent again this year. My blue-chip player is a genial, possibly seersucker-wearing Seth Rogen impersonator with strong knowledge of trash, the New Deal and the 1L curriculum. He's interested in teammates that will bring a blue collar, lunch pail mentality to playing in the bottom bracket and that can make up for his glaring inability to read a schedule. Let me know by PM or on the IRC if this sounds like the missing piece of your Chicago Open experience.

Charles Martin and I are looking for two more teammates. Tim Hartman told me not to hold my usual spot for him unless we still have a vacancy late in July. Our packet is 34/50 finished, with the science written a while ago, and I can surely make the second, regular deadline.

Hey Quizbowl,

So, I'd like to help staff any and all events for CO weekend. It'd be awesome if someone could put me up for Saturday night (and, depending on how those days shape up, Friday and Sunday). I'm cool with bringing a sleeping bag and crashing on a couch or a floor space - my objective here is simply to pay as little as possible for housing for a weekend of staffing. As implied in the last statement, I'm also open to pitching in for a hotel room with others who will be staying in Chicago. If you believe that you are able to help me out, please send me an email - I believe it should be an option under my username to the side. Thanks!

Edit: Thanks to everyone who sent an email. I have things settled now.

With Jacob Durst's having dropped out, Emily Koenig and I are now looking for a teammate or two - we have half of a packet written and will soon have more. Please contact me at the email listed at right if you're interested - non-lit people would be preferred, but anyone would be good at this point.

EDIT: We've picked up Joe Hansen and Columbia biochemist (Lawrence alum) Michael Schreiber, so we're no longer looking for teammates.

Hey, so we just had yet another drop from our team, Charlie Dees, Dan Puma, and myself are looking for a fourth yet again. I presume at this point we'd need to pick someone local up, so if anyone out there knows science (or, failing that, anything at all) and is interested, please email/PM me.
