Imaginary Landscape no. 1 at HSNCT
Imaginary Landscape no. 1 at HSNCT
I'm pleased to announce Imaginary Landscape no. 1, a tournament of pyramidal audio tossups to be held Saturday night after rounds are done at HSNCT. It's being written by Dave Letzler, John Lawrence, and me, and will consist of (likely) 160 audio tossups on mostly classical music, with jazz and a few other subjects thrown in. Each tossup is around a minute long, and contains 5 or 6 snippets of music arranged from least famous to most famous. Before each tossup, the moderator will say "name the composer" or "name the work" to prevent vagueness.
The tournament will likely work by splitting the field up into rooms of 8, playing a quick 20-tossup seeding round, reseeding players based on their performance in that round (top 2 from each room going to the top room, next 2 going to the second-best room, and so on). We'll play n/8 rounds, where n is the number of players in the field; after each round, the top 2 players in each room will move up a room, the bottom 2 players in each room will move down a room, and everyone else will stay where they are. After those rounds are finished, the 8 players in the top room will play a 40 tossup finals round, with the winner of that round winning the tournament.
The entry fee is fifteen dollars per person, and it will almost certainly take place at least an hour or more after rounds finish on Saturday. We currently have 73 tossups finished, and the majority of them are quite accessible by the end, in my opinion, while still containing plenty of clues to differentiate levels of knowledge. Anyone can play.
If you have any questions about this tournament, or would like to sign up for it, please email [email protected] or post here. I'm looking forward to building on Andrew Hart's tournament and seeing who in quizbowl really knows their music.

Here is a sample tossup for this tournament. Note that while its form is the same as the tossups for the tournament, its content is different.

I'd love to play this but I don't think I will be able to attend HSNCT. Any plans to have this done at NSC too?

For works, will there be multi-movement works where you include snippets from the different sections? Before each tossup, the moderator will say "name the composer" or "name the work" to prevent vagueness.

Yeah, but the answer to every works tossup will be the name of the overall work, not one of the movements.Jeremy Gibbs Freesy Does It wrote:For works, will there be multi-movement works where you include snippets from the different sections? Before each tossup, the moderator will say "name the composer" or "name the work" to prevent vagueness.

I'm no lawyer, but I think that these clips should be reasonably covered by fair use, especially since I can't see how these questions could deprive any copyright holder of income, and since the clips are transformed into something new, mainly pyramidal audio tossups (which I would think is different enough in purpose and character). Law students/lawyers are free to correct me if I'm wrong.Gaterion wrote:There will be absolutely no chance that I will be able or willing to attend, but how are you going to handle copyrights for this?

A trick I learned from the movie "Bowfinger" is to claim that whatever you're making is intended for distribution in Madagascar and Uzbekistan only, as in the film Steve Martin's character claims that US copyright law does not apply in these countries.

There should be a lot of public domain recordings of these works; if you come across one that isn't, in the worst case the set would have to be disseminated by email rather than being posted on collegiate.quizbowlpackets.com.

Re: Imaginary Landscape no. 1 at HSNCT
Wikipedia's fair use policies are really strict, and they often have sound clips of songs on their articles for bands, composers, songs, etc. All of them are similar in length to each "clue" of this event, if not longer. The only thing that limits them is that they can't be an insane amount of clips on the same subject or from the same source. So as long as you don't have an entire round where all the tossups are on Beethoven works and all the clips are from performances by the London Symphony Orchestra, I think that you'll probably be fine.magin wrote:I'm no lawyer, but I think that these clips should be reasonably covered by fair use, especially since I can't see how these questions could deprive any copyright holder of income, and since the clips are transformed into something new, mainly pyramidal audio tossups (which I would think is different enough in purpose and character). Given that nobody goes after Lil Wayne for his mixtapes, I think its safe to say legal concerns aren't a problem here.

Re: Imaginary Landscape no. 1 at HSNCT
I just want to say to everyone who might have some interest in this--this is probably the last major thing I'm going to work on quiz-bowl-wise. I think it's probably also the best, from a standpoint of originality and ambition--without exaggeration, I think this is going to be epoch-making. If you're going to be in the area and have any interest in music questions, you're going to want to play this.

Zev Kane won this tournament in impressive fashion; the other 4 players on the final packet were Samer Ismail, Farrah Bilimoria, Matt Jackson, and Andrew Hart.
More details and thanks to come tomorrow. I hope everyone enjoyed the tournament; I saw quite a few impressive buzzes.
EDIT: Due to a proposed mirror of this tournament at NSC, please don't discuss the questions until next week.

Jonathan Magin et al are pretty awesome for writing this set. That is all.

Please, somebody volunteer to run this at PACE and you will be a hero because lots of people want to play and nobody wants to run it yet.

If people are interested, I could run it Sunday night after the tournament is over.

This was honestly one of the most fun times I've ever had in quizbowl. I got to learn a ton, fail to recognize the origin of super-important things, and show that I'd heard other things that don't come up often when music gets translated into words. The non-classical tossups were a highlight of my day as well; all of them were just as well-written and well-ordered as the rest of the set, which was extremely accessible (with a few "6es" thrown in for extra fun). Super-thanks to Jonathan, Dave, and John for writing this; hopefully something similar happens again!

I'm not going to do this unless it's either Saturday after the end of games or else Friday night, and I suspect strongly that most potential players are in the same boat.dtaylor4 wrote:If people are interested, I could run it Sunday night after the tournament is over.

I could stay late on Saturday night and do this. You'll have to put up with my crappy netbook speakers since that's all I'm bringing home for the weekend.Jeremy Gibbs Freesy Does It wrote:I'm not going to do this unless it's either Saturday after the end of games or else Friday night, and I suspect strongly that most potential players are in the same boat.dtaylor4 wrote:If people are interested, I could run it Sunday night after the tournament is over.
