Post by Stained Diviner »

EDIT: From now on, refer to IHSSBCA Tournament Central.

If there are any updates needed to that schedule, feel free to put them in this thread or email me or Jonah.

LIST II down in St. Louis will probably be at the end of March or the beginning of April; we'd love for a lot of Illinois teams to come down.

I'm trying to see if UIC can host some sort of housewrite or HSAPQ set (if available) in one of the weekends of December or Late October/ Early November. I will find out the details in the coming months.

At this point, there's a decent chance that Loyburn or Scobol Solo will be November 5, so be careful with that date.

ACF Fall will quite probably be that day, so unless Loyburn runs on ACF Fall, there will be a lot of sad quizbowlers if that ends up true.

Belvidere North will be hosting Stampede on Feb. 4th.
We are looking into hosting a novice or F/S early in the year but have nothing confirmed.

Everyone note that many dates are claimed every year (e.g. Fremd is always third Saturday in January, New Trier Varsity is third Saturday in December). This shouldn't prohibit anyone from hosting a tournament but keep in mind your field might be undercut if you go up against a long established tournament (pending format, etc.). I try to coordinate the schedule so let me know if you have any questions.

And Donald, I might be willing to host your singles event if I host a fall tournament.

Carbondale, as stated in the above schedule, is strongly considering hosting a mirror of NTV in SoIll this year. Which date does the quiz bowl community think is ideal? We were leaning towards 10/29, but that's a SCOP date, and we were planning to attempt to host a SCOP site again. If we can host SCOP at a later date, then we'll probably do the solo on the 29th, but if not we'll try a different one. Thoughts?

You guys probably should just pick a date when you don't want to play anything. If you aren't playing ACF Fall or Moline F/S, and you don't need college people to staff, and Fall ends up on 11/5, then that's probably a good date. If your team isn't going to PORTA F/S, you could do 12/10. You could also try 1/14 or 2/4. You can host Solo whenever you want to, especially now that this board is willing to set up private discussions for people who want to talk about questions before mirrors are completed.

I'm hoping to attract the top teams in the area, as well as other teams interested in good quizbowl - the sort of teams that wouldn't be interested in attending the Kaneland tournament. With that in mind, I'm looking for a standard to slightly harder than standard difficulty set.

I'll be writing Fremd again (varsity set only this time), so that third Saturday in January would be a solid time to host an upper-echelon invite. I'm aiming to make the set better and more difficult than last year, but it probably wont be much more difficult than an IS set.

Not sure if this the right place to post this, but since it does affect schedules I'll put it here. IHSA has just announced a change in the Classifications making 540 the new enrollment number for Scholastic Bowl. This will mean Macomb, Lisle, and most likely Greenville will move to Class AA. Not to downplay the affect on other teams, but these seemed to be most glaring.

Ok that's why no one claimed that.... Yeah nevermind. I'll see what other date would work.

Any chance of making that October 9? I suspect there's a decent number of people who would be interested in playing (or staffing, in my case), but will be in synagogue for Yom Kippur on the 8th.

Like Dan-Don's our FNT bid was approved, so I can say for sure that our F/S tournament will be played on that set. Also, I believe the date listed here for that event (11/5) is incorrect; as of the last time I talked with my coach she had changed it to 11/12. I'm going to send her an email today and I'll ask her for confirmation on that.

Are any of these tournaments hosting a "novice"/"beginner" division open to middle school teams?

DanDon's tourney at Northwestern had a five-team middle school division last year, and so, pending sufficient interest, I imagine he would do that again.

Basically, just like the IHSA doesn't regulate 4 v 4 competition, IESA doesn't either. So any 4 v 4 tournament is allowed to include middle schoolers. It is up to the TD to decide if they want to allow it or not.

I imagine that after Barrington's impressive run at last year's NAQT MSNCT, you'll see more middle school teams playing high school tournaments in the Illinois circuit.

It should be noted that IESA does ban the competing and practicing of school representatives against High School or non-school teams in interscholastic competitions. Generally this is to protect atheletes and IHSA makes allowances for activities but I could not find where IESA made a similar exemption. This rule most likely does not apply during the off season, since there are allowances for camps and such, but again it might be worth looking at closer. IHSSBCA, as I understand, made inquiries concerning the High School rules, specifically as it related to the 18 dates limit, but I don't know if similar inquiries were made with the IESA, which has no such limit.
