Triton Spring - 4/23
Triton Spring - 4/23
The UCSD Quizbowl Team will be hosting another high school tournament intended as a nationals warm-up on one of the two announced dates. We plan to split the tournament into two divisions and run them concurrently. The competitive division will see teams play each other on Hunter College HS's Prison Bowl set, while the regular division will use HSAPQ Tourn 17 pending confirmation. Any team can apply to enter either division.
Pricing:
Base fee: $80 ($70 for second and subsequent teams)
Buzzer discount: -$10 per working buzzer system (at least 4 buzzers and lights on each side work)
Moderator discount: -$10 for competent moderator
Travel discount: -$10 per 200 miles
New to Quizbowl (as in, this will be their first pair of good tournaments ever): -$60, once per school
NSC:
This tournament will probably be an NSC qualifier.
Other:
We need your input for which date we should hold the tournament on. From a glance at the staffer spreadsheet, it looks like the two days work equally well, so it's up to you guys to determine when more people can show up. We want this tournament to draw a decently-sized field, so we will be sending email invitations as we have for the past few tournaments. On top of that, we encourage you to ask your friends on other teams to come as well!
Field:
Competitive:
Torrey Pines (x2) - 2 buzzers
La Jolla (x1) - 1 buzzer
University (x1)- 1 buzzer
Rancho Bernardo (x1)
Canyon Crest (x1) - 2 buzzers
Regular:
Torrey Pines (x1)
Montgomery (x1) - 1 buzzer
Irvine (x2)
Rancho Bernardo (x2) - 1 buzzer + 1 moderator
Canyon Crest (x1)
Westview (x1)
+1 buzzer from UCSD
Unspecified:
Total: 14 teams and 8 buzzers

Rancho Bernardo will attend with at least one team and at least one buzzer set. More specificity to come in the near future.

University will attend with one competitive team, one buzzer, and a possible second team that is not yet specified.

Will the winners of both Competitive and Regular divisions be able to qualify for Nationals?

Yes, that is correct. Also, field update posted above. Some UCSD tournament regulars haven't yet signed up; there's not much time left to do so!DoWon.Kim wrote:Will the winners of both Competitive and Regular divisions be able to qualify for Nationals?

We've gotten a sudden rush of late registrations (and no drops...yet) so we're in the market for a few good readers if any team wants to provide 'em. $20 discount + lunch money for them.

Re: Triton Spring - 4/23
I'll close the field at this very advantageous number of 16 teams, 8 per division. We will probably do a round robin for each division, followed by a top/bottom rebracketing and a 3 game round robin. Finals if no team clears the field by two or more.

Re: Triton Spring - 4/23
Congrats to Torrey Pines A, which ran the table to finish with a 10-0 record and win the competitive division of Triton Spring against a very talented group of competitors.
Also, in our regular/JVish division, Westview (which just started playing quizbowl this year) emerged triumphant with a 9-1 record after a round robin and 4-3 re-bracketed playoff (Montgomery left after the initial RR). Note that the bottom 3 just played 3-way scrimmage matches and the stats from the upper 4 in the rebracket got mangled, so I've excluded them from the stats. I believe Irvine and TP C tied for 2nd in that division though.
Full stats (minus one game I couldn't find between TP B and LJ A) for the competitive division and the results of the initial RR in the regular division here. Note that the upper division played on the Prison Bowl set while the lower one played HSAPQ 17.
Thanks to everyone for coming and we'll see y'all next year.
