Where Will You Be Going to College Next Year?
Where Will You Be Going to College Next Year?
Let's not turn this into a big brag thing, but I was wondering where everyone's heading off to college next year and if they'll be playing quizbowl. For me, Emory or UF seem the most likely. If I go to UF, I'll probably be playing quizbowl; but if I go to Emory, it might be a bit hard to start up a club for them so I'm not sure.

Emory had a club as recently as April of last year, when Vamsi Tata attended NGSCU's mirror of MUT, so you may not have to start up a new team.Ar$oni$t$ Get All the Girl$ wrote:... but if I go to Emory, it might be a bit hard to start up a club for them so I'm not sure.

There is a 99% chance of me attending Auburn University next year. I have researched and haven't found any form of team in existence there. I plan to start a team, but I literally have no idea how to do it.

Re: Where Will You Be Going to College Next Year?
Kay, if you can start a team at Emory, you'll be a quizbowl hero. Seriously, there's no reason on earth why that school shouldn't have a competitive team every year, and it would be a perfect place to host tournaments.
Nick's link looks helpful. Starting a team would take some work, but it's possible. Auburn seems like a good place for a team too. It's a big school that's very close to two frequent hosting destinations. Even if you can't get much funding for your first year, you can still have a decent-sized season by just going to tournaments in Atlanta and Tuscaloosa without having to spend anything on hotels and not too much on gas. Also, and this has been mentioned before, don't hesitate to play up Auburn's rivalry with Alabama as a way to coax some money out of the student government or administration or whoever. Just let them know that Alabama has one of the best teams in the region and that you all sure would like the resources to compete with them.
Also, don't hesitate to ask for help and information from established programs like Alabama. Finally, Joey, you and anyone else attending school in the Southeast may be interested in my free e-newsletter on Southeastern quizbowl. I mail it out a few times a semester and it keeps people somewhat informed. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] if interested. This goes for anyone in the Southeast (or elsewhere), including high school players and coaches.

I'm most likely going to University of Michigan, but there is a small chance that I end up attending University of Miami in Florida. Does anybody know if there is a team there?

Re: Where Will You Be Going to College Next Year?
I am pretty certain UMiami doesn't have an active team. The captain of my high school (Ransom Everglades) quizbowl team few years ago (Jay Sridhar) matriculated to UM, and was an editor for an ACF Fall tournament few years ago, but I don't think he took the effort to create a team there.
Short answer: no, but there's definitely potential, especially if you contact the active South Florida high school teams for help in forming it (cough cough Ransom Everglades, Westminster Christian, South Fork).
Forming a quizbowl team at UMiami also would definitely help quizbowl in the South Florida area, a Great Thing. If you go to sunny, warm, beautiful UMiami, please do this.

Haven't heard back from them yet; My top choice is George Washington, who I also have yet to hear back from. Though if they don't give me enough financial aid/scholarship $$ I very well could end up at U of O. I may also end up at Clark, Vermont, or UMBC.Bentley Like Beckham wrote:Are you still thinking about going to Oregon?Wurzel-Flummery wrote:Former WJ team member Ashu Joshi goes there, he may or may not be worth tracking down.mhawlik wrote:I am pretty certain UMiami doesn't have an active team. Re: Where Will You Be Going to College Next Year?
A lot of quizbowlers got into some really good places. Personally, I'll probably go to UChicago provided I get enough financial aid (*crosses fingers*). If I can't get financial aid, then it's UF. However, I also have the option of Columbia if by some miracle I get off of waitlist.
EDIT: Actually, even if I got off of Columbia's waitlist, I'd have a pretty big decision to make between it and Chicago.

Due to budget cuts, the US federal government is no longer paying for me to take classes at Georgetown. So effective at the end of the current academic year, I will be abdicating as Apostolic King of Georgetown Quizbowl.
My suspicion is that apart from summer open tournaments and/or random events in the DC area, I am done with playing quizbowl. I plan to focus primarily on writing and editing for a bit, and then eventually disappear entirely.

Re: Where Will You Be Going to College Next Year?
I would have enjoyed starting up a team at UMiami, but I'll be attending Michigan in the fall.wexs883198215 wrote:Ashu tells me he really misses playing quizbowl and I imagine he'd be interested in playing on a team.Wurzel-Flummery wrote:Former WJ team member Ashu Joshi goes there, he may or may not be worth tracking down.mhawlik wrote:I am pretty certain UMiami doesn't have an active team.

I'll go to Alabama next year. Sounds like a plan. Maybe I'll retire again, though.

I'm finishing my MS this summer and in October, I'll be moving to Chandler, AZ to work for Intel as a process engineer. Maybe I'll help Arizona State with some things while I'm there.
