Illinois NAQT State Championship - 2/26/11 @ Fenton HS

Post by MLaudermith »

Again this year, Fenton HS is proud to host the Illinois NAQT State Championship on Saturday, February 26. Please see the attached invitation and registration form for all the details. Only the first 16 teams to register by check by Feb 9 will be guaranteed a spot in the tournament. The cost is $60 for each A team. B teams will be put on a waiting list until Feb 10. Teams can expect to play a minimum of 10 games and like last year, there will be no computational math.

Unlike previous years, I'm having real difficulty finding enough experienced moderators to run timed games. If you are interested in moderating at NAQT State, please contact me in the near future ([email protected]). Moderators will receive some remuneration and a free lunch. If I can't secure enough moderators by Feb 26, then we will play 20-question untimed games.

ACF Regionals will probably prevent most of the UIUC contingent from moderating this.

I know. That's the story for most of last year's moderators.

IMSA would like to bring one team.

I am having our office process this registration today, so there is a decent chance the check will get to you by February 9, as requested.

Here are the teams that have officially registered for NAQT State so far, though I know there are several more that are interested:
Fenton
Loyola A
Wheaton-Warrenville South A
IMSA
Riverside-Brookfield
Stevenson A
Maine South
Auburn A
Lisle
New Trier

I also have a few B teams on the waiting list.

Right now, it's looking like I'll have enough moderators to run timed matches, but I can always use more help. If you are interested in staffing NAQT State at Fenton, please let me know.

EDIT: The field grows.

I will staff this. My recent exploits as a scorekeeper in the bottom bracket of the lower division aside, I can probably lock down a room for you quite nicely.

We're currently playing the first game of an Auburn A vs. Stevenson A final in which Stevenson A has the advantage. At the half, it's Auburn A 235, Stevenson A 210.

Loyola A got third place; "Proviso North" fourth.

Holy cow. Is this for real? How does a team power 15 NAQT questions in a round? Pretty incredible.

Just the score is pretty frightening. This was 815 points out of a possible 900, right? Wow!

They got through at least 23 questions, so it's out of a possible 1035 or 1080. They answered 53/63 bonus parts. The matches were timed.

Ah, I didn't know that the rounds were timed. I see now that they heard 23 tossups, so that makes sense. That's still an extraordinarily impressive score, though!

I just wanted to thank all of the teams that attended the IL NAQT State Championship yesterday. After hitting a number of obstacles before and during the tournament, the whole thing came off beautifully.

Congratulations to the top four teams: Stevenson A, Auburn A, Loyola A, and Proviso North. Congratulations as well to Stevenson B, who won the consolation championship.

Many thanks to Jonah Greenthal who did so much to organize the tournament, and to Donald Taylor who ran the stats room. Much appreciation to the staffers: Tom Egan, David Riley, Colby Burnett, Jonah Greenthal, Jeremy Nelson, Ali Nagib, Brad Fischer, Kristin Strey, and Mike Wong.

Stevenson A played Belvidere North twice Saturday. They heard 46 total tossups in those two games. In them, Stevenson powered 27 of them. This is just ridiculous. Stevenson is a scary good team with what appears to be a rarity: two superstar players each capable of 100+ point games, sometimes during the same match!

All rounds had a maximum of 23 questions, because we eliminated computation. As Cathy points out, though, 815/1035 is really, really impressive (and very much for real).

Having witnessed Stephenson on Saturday, I wish I could have tracked how fast they were powering on those questions. After discussing it with my very shocked and disappointed team, there were times that the opening phrase had not registered with them by the time Stephenson had buzzed. Of course Brad Fischer finishing a 23 question round with 4:30 minutes left also shows how impressive they were.
