UT - Chattanooga's Dennis Haskins Invitational (March 19)

Post by quizbowllee »

I thought I'd weigh in on this tournament since no one else has.

First off, I have taken my team to 16 tournaments so far this year. The two at UTC have been by far the most fun and the best run. Not enough can be said in praise of Charlie and his crew and their incredible tournaments.

The results were as follows:

Varsity:

1st - Berean Christian
2nd - Brindlee Mountain

JV:

1st - Dunbar A
2nd - Dunbar B

There was a huge field of 45 teams. We had the opportunity to play some fierce competitors such as Webb, Berean, and Dunbar. The questions were great. There was not a single hose. All questions were pyramidal and fair. I have not a single complaint about any of them (which is very rare for me...)

Anyway, I hope other teams who were at the tournament will comment. Also, if you haven't given UTC a try, I highly recommend that you do.

We invariably have fun at UTC, and I agree that the questions are generally well-written. Charlie and company keep things light, and the trash round at the end of prelims is always a hit with my team.
Brindlee Mountain is a team to watch--for the next three years. I believe they started three 9th graders at UTC, and they certainly got my attention when they defeated us in the Division 1 semifinals.

The same questions were used at Great Lakes at Case Western, and we also thought they were all good questions. There was one with some questionable content (I could care less, but some people might complain about 'blowjob' being used in a high school tournament)... but we also had a good time playing on those questions.

I've known about Brindlee for the last couple of years. Last year, as 8th graders, their team beat us at the NAQT State Tournament, which cost us the state title. This team will be rough in 2 years, and they still have a pretty good pipeline coming from their middle school.

I'm not from anywhere near Alabama, but the fact that they have a couple freshman started has already had me keeping an eye on them.

That's strange, because here those not in high school yet are prohibited from competing with a high school team unless he/she is in enrollment there (I almost got around it this way my 8th grade year)

I liked the tournament, however at times it got crowded in the rooms. I think the teams shouldn't have faced each other in some of the rooms. That was irritating. But otherwise, great tournament!!!

As coach of Brindlee Mountain, I just wanted to say that I appreciate your kind words about the team... Many, many factors came together perfectly for me to have such an incredible group of freshmen players. It is an honor to coach such wonderful kids, and I can't wait to see what they will be capable of over the next few years.

Most of you know that the team is almost entirely made up of freshmen, but you might NOT know that this is also the first year that Brindlee Mountain High School has existed. Before this year, there was Brindlee Mountain Middle School, which fed into a different high school. It was during the time that the board of education was discussing making BMHS when we were allowed to participate in the NAQT Alabama State Tournament. Normally middle schools were not invited, but I wanted the powers that be to know what these kids were already capable of (as 8th graders), in the hopes that it might sway their efforts of creating a high school.

At any rate, this year has been good so far. We are planning to attend both PACE and NAQT nationals, but I don't think we pose any real threat at either at this point. Basically, this year is recon for next year, and the year after... and the year after...

But, I also wanted to make one other point about this group - something that really makes them stand out - and that is that at UTC (and every other tournament), there is no dominant player. While usually Andy Knowles (9th grade/team captain) has the most points, I noticed that throughout the day each one of my four starters manged to be the top scorer in at least one round. Mark Morris (9th grade) had 70 points in one play-off round. Amanda Hardin (9th) also led the team with 80 points in a different playoff round. Andy and Myles Teston (the lone senior) also both led the team in different rounds. Incidentally, Justin Decker (9th grade/JV captain) has been putting up huge numbers and will be joining the A-team when Myles graduates. Thefore, next year's team will be four sophomores.

I think that what makes this team so rare is this dependency that they can have on each other. They know one another very well and play as one unit moreso than any other team I have ever known. It's going to be a VERY interesting few years... Sorry to brag so much on them, but I'm just amazed at what this young team can do - so much so that it humbles even me at times.

Yup. Sho 'nuff. These freshmen really have it going for them. The coach has spent about 4-5 years with all of them. Let me give you a little more insight...

1 - The origins of Brindlee Mountain High begin with two middle schools - Grassy and Union Grove. Both of these middle schools fed into Arab High School prior to 2001.
2 - Lee was coach of the Union Grove Junior High Scholar's Bowl team for the last three years of its existence, and I (Myles) was on this team for the last two years. I went to Arab High School in 2001 and spent my 9th, 10th, and 11th grade years there.
3 - In 2001 the building that now houses BMHS was built as a new junior high. Grassy and Union Grove were reduced to elementary schools that fed into Brindlee Mountain Middle School. Brindlee Mountain Middle School continued to feed into Arab High School. Lee became coach here for three years as he finished up at Snead and went on to Athens to recieve his Bachelor's. He won an ASCA State Middle School Championship his first year there.
4 - In 2004 Brindlee Mtn. added classrooms in order to house a high school there as well. The Middle School then discontinued feeding into Arab High School and instead began feeding into Brindlee Mountain High School. (The issue of BMHS' creation sparked a great deal of debate for many years. Arab High, which is in its own district, opposed the creation. The county district won in the end, however. Arab High School is currently 5A and will continue downsizing until it is about 3A. BMHS is currently 1A and will continue growing until it is about 3A) Lee became the coach of the new high school team as well as the high school English teacher. His entire varsity team was composed of freshmen that were formerly 8th graders on his middle school A-team. Lee continues to coach the Brindlee Mtn. Middle school team also.
5 - I came back in September to finish my senior year at Brindlee Mtn. I had spent three years with little to no coaching whatsover at Arab High. I found all these little 9th grade scholar's bowl machines that I realized could turn the world of Alabama quiz bowl around. I played my hardest in practice and managed to somehow win a seat on Varsity.
To Review:

Brindlee Mountain High School

*** Because I am the only senior on the team people expect me to be the best player... this is not the case at all. I have my moments, but these freshmen really take the cake. They will only get better in the next few years. None of them will quit. They are extremely dedicated. BMHS will be a tremendous force for years to come. The Middle School team also has strong players, who will obtain a great deal of field experience as JV players.
****Many high school teams go through cycles. They will go strong for a couple of years, and then go dormant for one or two years as they break in new freshmen to the game. Brindlee Mountain School is different... the middle school team and the high school team have the same coach, which allows for a persistent stream of well-trained players. Lee will be successful at keeping the bases loaded. When these freshmen graduate in three years, he will have a new batch prepared to fill their seats.

Now you know....... the rest of the story!

Oh - and just to keep the string to its subject for Mr. Weiner:

The UTC tournament was incredible. We also attended the one they hosted in the fall. We were equally impressed by both of them. It was great getting to know our neighbors the the north (the Tennesseans and Kentuckians) a little better. Like my coach said, the questions were pyramidal and fair. Yes, the tossup featuring Andy Warhol's Blowjob did make my jaw drop (no dirty joke intended), but they were written by mature collegiate players. Surely by now we can handle taboo subjects like that... but I think everybody snickered a little bit.

All in all, the tournament was great. The best part by far had to be the recaps of the preliminaries, including recognition for "Insanely Early Buzzes", and "Gloriously Wrong Answers". Charlie and his crew enjoy quiz bowl a lot and attending one of his tournaments will definitely change your outlook of the great sport of quiz bowl!

Dennis Haskins Open: full results, stats, gratitude, etc.

Post by Your Genial Quizmaster »

Thanks to Lee, Ron, et al. for the kind words. Sorry to be so slow in getting the full results here -- after a tournament week, I usually have to put in some time on the home front, not to mention the ol' day job. But just to make everything official:

Congratulations to Berean Christian A and Paul L. Dunbar A, winners of the varsity and junior divisions (respectively) at the 2005 Dennis Haskins Open High School Quizbowl. This was the 8th annual Haskins, held at UT-Chattanooga on March 19, 2005. Speaking for myself, it was one of the most enjoyable tournaments I've ever run, with a great attitude all around and remarkably smooth operations despite the size (38 teams in 3 buildings.) Full results follow below, but first...

Special thanks go to UTC's stats demigoddess and surrogate tournament director Nikki Poarch for an outstanding job handling logistics. Thanks also to Rachel Moore for shuttling questions and scoresheets between tournament HQ and the other two buildings. Thanks go to the outstanding house reader corps we had, including Tom Michael, Dave Leach, Mark Dawson, Chris Hendry, Dren Rollins, Wes Eddings, and Scott Sanders; Northwest Shoals CC's Josh Clanton; Macon State's Steve Taylor, Travis Lightsey, and Brett Norris; and UTC's John Kilby, David Moore, Eric Fox, Ashley Rousselle, Jacob Vannucci, Jimmy Beilstein, and Zach Cross. Thanks also to the coaches who read or at least offered to read: Ruth Jackson, Steve Sessis, Mike Taylor, Bob St. John, Kay Campbell, Robin Slack, Emmaly Fisher, and Ron Smith.

Thanks also go to Jeffrey Hanson & co. from Case Western Reserve University, our principal collaborators in writing the questions, and to Jeremy Rasmussen et al. from the University of South Florida for swapping material from their college tournament that same weekend. We also had many freelance contributors lending a hand. Thanks to Ray Luo et al. from Cal-Berkeley, Eric Smith et al. from Stanford, the aforementioned trio from Macon State, Mark Coen, Jason Carl Mueller, Raj Dhuwalia, Kelli Barone, Billy Beyer, Kelly Miskowski, Paul Bailey, Chuck Pearson, Jack Brounstein, Anthony Gisonda, Micha Elsner, John Solter, Chris Lin, Ray Anderson, Andrew Willey et al, from Rhodes, Anthony Napolitano, and anyone I may have omitted.

As for the results: We had a total of 38 teams -- 24 in Division I and 14 in Division II (for players grades 7-10 only.) The 24 Div. I teams were split into three brackets, Zack, A.C., and Screech. Similarly, the 14 Div. II teams were split into two brackets, Jessie and Kelly. Results after the 7-round round robin were:
