IO @ UIUC - 3/5/11

Post by Papa's in the House »

Since I'm taking over as TD of this tournament, I don't want this post to wind up in the middle of the main IO thread and be ignored*. Therefore, I have created this thread for all logistics information, field updates, team registrations, etc. I will make periodic updates to the field in this post.

This is an announcement for Illinois Open held at UIUC on March 5, 2011. See here for further information.

Location
This tournament will be held in Wohlers Hall. The full address for Wohlers Hall is:
1206 S Sixth St
Urbana, IL 61801
A map of the location can be found here.
Tournament central will be in Room 141 (big lecture room on the first floor). This is where you should start and end the day. It is also where you can go to have questions answered.

There is ample parking in the area, including lot E-3, which is right next to the Main Library and less than 5 minutes from most of the campus. Parking is free in this lot on Saturdays and Sundays. Please see Jeff Geringer's post for locations of more lots.

I intend to start this tournament at 9:00 AM. Teams that arrive after this time will face my wrath. Teams that arrive after 9:15 AM will face my wrath a la Donald Taylor and the potential of a forfeited game (unless weather-related phenomena cause the start time to be delayed much like the Indiana SCT and this past CO). Furthermore, I am going to steal WUSTL's idea and penalize teams $20 that do not contact me by 9:00 AM. If the ABT causes this tournament to be delayed, then I will deduct some amount from teams' fees for wasting their time.

Who can play this tournament?
This is an open tournament, so anyone can play (unless you somehow earn Ike's wrath and he prevents you from playing).

What kind of difficulty can I expect?
See the main thread for more details.

Costs and other discounts
Base fee: $120
Buzzer discount: -$5 each
Moderator: -$10 each
Travel: -$5 for every 100 miles as determined by Mapquest. Maximum of -$20 for travel.
Delay penalties/deductions: $20/$?

Side Events
Wissenschaftslehre
Guerrilla RPG 2

Side events will likely occur Saturday night. If not, they will take place in David Kinley Hall (directly east from Wohlers Hall on Gregory Dr) and start at 10:00 AM.

Contact Information
If you wish to attend this tournament, or if you have any questions about it, you can e-mail the Tournament Director, me, at [email protected]. Please inform me as to the number of teams, buzzers, and moderators you intend to bring, as well as how many miles you are from UIUC.

Field:
Laferbrook & Teitice (1)
Rom and Friends (1)
Michigan (1)
Chicago (2)
Free agents [Chicago player(s), UIUC player(s)?] (1)
Total = 6

Free Agents:

Buzzers:
UIUC (2)
Michigan (3)
Total = 5

Moderators:
UIUC (3)
Total = 3

*I guess even creating a new thread doesn't prevent this once prior posts pertaining to the field are added. Oh well.

Oh yeah so I probably should give an update on the sets of both tournaments just for the hell of it. On the non-science side, this tournament could happen tomorrow. Everything's been written, and now I'm vetting the set for hilariously hard third parts and the like.

Craig and I's side tournament has fifty tossups done. I hope to get anywhere between 150-200 tossups in for the tournament, but I won't promise anything as I'm going to be out of town for five days soon. I highly encourage everyone to come and play this tournament as I've been working on it for a ridiculous amount of time and its exciting factor is like ACF Nats with the only difference being I'm in charge and not Jerry Forkbeard and Magin the Wise for better or for worse.

I have updated this field. Mike Sorice is available as a free agent for this tournament. I have been told that Seth Teitler is also playing this tournament, so I have put him in the free agent list. I strongly encourage more teams (Chicago?) to attend this tournament. If you believe you are playing this tournament, but your name/team is not listed, you should contact me soon. I would like to have a final field by next weekend so I can start letting staffers know that they won't need to show up.

As pleasing as it would be for me to show up and render vengeance for the insult done to my beard's reputation for structural integrity, I'm afraid that for various logistical reasons I'm going to have to cancel my plans to attend this tournament. I may be going to the Penn mirror instead; would the side event be available for play there?

Hey, I didn't really want to be the guy to say this, but there are definitely some logistical concerns for teams traveling to this tournament. March 5th is the day after Unofficial St. Patrick's Day, and somewhere around 40,000 (or more) people travel to Champaign for this occasion. As such, inbound teams and players should be concerned with the following:

1. Hotels in town are very difficult to get, to my knowledge. If you haven't made such arrangements already, it would be a good idea to get on those immediately.

2. Parking will be a nightmare. There is a lot to the far southeast of campus (E-14, if you're keeping score at home) that is definitely wide open, but the walk from there to the tournament building can take 20 minutes. While the Gregory/Library lot most teams park in may be open in the morning, I certainly wouldn't count on it. There is a possibility the lot on Springfield between Matthews and Goodwin will have parking. It is closer to the tournament, but I am also rather unsure if that lot will have spaces remaining.

I know I have at least four quizbowlers crashing at my place, but I could probably accommodate a few more in the house if absolutely necessary.

I just booked a two-bed room at the Red Roof Inn, which was for some reason cheaper than a single bed. I would be open to accomodating any quizbowler who is in town for IO (or, I suppose, in town for Unofficial St. Patrick's Day).

There are 15 packets for this tournament, hence there will be some form of a round robin before teams are broken into an upper and lower bracket. An ACF style final will be played if necessary. I will provide a final schedule when a final team count has been decided. I would prefer to avoid byes if at all possible, so I'd really like to see 10 teams (or even 14 so I can just run one full round robin).

On the topic of Unofficial, just realize that this campus will be quite a bit more crowded than it normally is. Please plan accordingly.

Please keep reviewing my main post for updates in the field, the schedule (when I make it), etc.

I can bring a UIC lock-out system provided that I can refix 1/8 that has been silent since the Penn Bowl mirrors. I have two nights of free lodging promised again. I can stay Saturday evening and/or Sunday morning for Craig and Ike's social science toss-ups, but I just found that thread to be "locked".

On the topic of side events, I haven't heard anything about Guerrila RPG 2, so I'm assuming that it won't happen. Therefore, I have no plans to run that side event unless people write and email me packets by 8 AM Friday morning.

Wissenschaftlehre will be run. The format will depend wholly on how many people are interested in playing this side event and when we run it. I currently plan to run the tournament Sunday morning, but if we somehow get through IO itself by dinner time (~5 PM) on Saturday, I will just run it that evening. If you interested in playing Wissenschaftlehre, I will have you write your name on the board the day of IO and will construct a format for the side event during lunch.

I only moved all of the free agents to a free agent team in my first post because 1) no one informed me that you had joined another team; and 2) this is what I would have done on Friday anyways. Now that I have been informed otherwise, I will update my first post.

Illinois Open concluded with a 10-0 day for "Laferbrook and Teitice," with Kurtis from Michigan as the top individual scorer (58 PPG).

As fifteen packets were written and only ten used, all six teams decided to keep playing, so the top six individuals (Kurtis, Sorice, Sam, Bruce, Selene, Seth) drafted players into six new teams, and Illinois Open Part Deux began as a single, full round-robin. Wissenschaftslehre will follow for whatever teams are staying for that planned side-event, and I haven't heard anything about Guerrilla RPG 2 (I am assuming that it won't be happening).

Edit: One room (thus, one-third of the tournament) was not keeping statistics, so only the final results of Part Deux will be announced, without stats.

That is some, um... exciting bonus conversion.
You really missed out. Well anyways, due to delayed mirrors, I'll be setting asking that moderator create a private discussion forum to discuss all specific things about the event.

So I had a lot of fun at this tournament. The set was delightfully creative and did a good job of mixing in "hard questions about easy things". There were some issues with bonus difficulty variance and editor pet subjects, but I got the sense that most people at the tournament really enjoyed themselves. If you're on the fence about playing it at a different site, I recommend it.

I'd like to thank Ike Jose, Craig Messner, and Dayne Rogers for showing up to help staff this tournament. I hope all of the teams that attended this site found the tournament enjoyable.
